1 Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Arts In Education Creative and Story Drama help students understand what s happening in a story and develop empathy as they taken on the roles of the characters in play. Dear Educator, We are pleased to be offering an exciting array of programs to support the arts and humanities in your classroom and school. In the following pages, you ll find an overview of available programs appropriate for PreKindergarden classes through high school. In an effort to make these programs more accessible to you, we have simplified the process of program selection. Now you select the programs that suits your needs from the provided list - all programs offered connect to the Georgia Performance Standards. These programs are offered first-come, first-served so please contact us early in the school year. Our Arts in Education program offers opportunities to every school in the Glynn County School System, and has for over 15 years. Last year our programs reached over 9,000 students. This is possible through our community s support, state support, and individual schools in their commitment to ensure arts have a place in every child s education. 3 In-School Residencies & Programs The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create. President Barack Obama Golden Isles Arts & Humanities offers free programs and residencies for Glynn County Schools! Choose from programs listed on the Overview of Programs page, fill out the one-page application and we ll get to work immediately. Additional specific programs will be added to the list as they have been booked and are confirmed. Please check back periodically throughout the school year on our website or by contacting us directly. Want something totally different for your class? Great! If you know a specific program you d like us to bring to your school, Fill out the Arts-In-Education Application and send it in. Please make sure the programs you request are tied to specific curriculum or to a community event (like The Big Read). Want something totally different but you re not sure what? If you have a general idea but would like us to do some research and make suggestions, Fill out the Arts-In-Education Application and send it in. 4 Field Trips at the Ritz Meet these GPS by attending a show! All performances run approx. one hour. Tickets for field trip shows are $5 per seat. For every 20 tickets ordered your group receives a $5 discount. All performances take place at the Historic Ritz Theatre, 1530 Newcastle Street, Brunswick, GA Please contact artsed@goldenislesarts.org or call for more information and reservations. A tiny pea under twenty mattresses is the Queen s final test to see if her beloved son s chosen bride is worthy of his hand. Hans Christian Andersen s classic fairy tale meets the comic storytelling of Italian Commedia dell arte. Suggested Grades: K and up Ritz Radio Theatre Presents A Christmas Story December 8-10 and Based on the classic movie, the Ritz Radio Theatre tells the story of young Ralphie s Christmas Holiday season as he bargains for a Red Rider BB Gun. Done in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast complete with period costumes and live sound effects! Suggested Grades: 3rd-12th Shame the Devil: An Audience with Fanny Kemble March 29 & Join Fanny Kemble as she shares her experiences advocating for the rights of slaves as humans and the consequences of making that stand. This one-woman show features Heather Heath and is based on the writings of Fanny Kemble, in particular her Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation Suggested Grades: 8th-12th The Phantom Tollbooth May 10-12th and The Phantom Tollbooth tells the story of a bored kid named Milo, who takes an exciting journey through a magical kingdom, and in the process learns that life (and learning, too) isn't so boring after all. This year s Middle Read novel comes alive on stage and is a fun way to end the school year. Suggested Grades: 2nd-8th

5 Art Exhibits at the Ritz Art Teacher Art Exhibit August - September, Opening Reception 8/2 from 5-8pm A showcase for the work of the talented, dedicated art teachers in our Glynn County schools. Student Art Exhibits allow the community to see first hand the quality of work produced in our schools. Student Art Show December - January, Opening Reception 12/4 from 5-8pm A longstanding holiday tradition and one of our most popular annual exhibits displaying hundreds of works by our K-12 students. Drop Off: 12/1-2, Pick Up: 2/2-3 Creating for and Participating in Student & Teacher Art Exhibits raises awareness of the talents and importance of these programs in our schools within the community. It also encourages students to develop 21st Century Skills: creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration. Big Read Exhibits: The Adventures of Your Name The Ritz and Pigasso vs. The Brunswick Library February, Opening Reception 2/5 from 5-8pm Middle and High School students create and share their own adventures and Elementary students create works inspired by the works of the talented Pigasso and Mootise from the Little Read selection. Drop Off: 2/2-3, Pick Up: 3/1-2 Reflections March, Opening Reception 3/4 from 5-8pm For the 4th year, the Ritz Gallery will host a month long exhibit of Glynn County finalists and winners from all categories of the PTA s Reflections contest. Re-Upcycled Art April, Opening Reception 4/1 from 5-8pm One of the most unique exhibits featured in our gallery, students are challenged to upcycle trash into art, or usable art. This exhibit is in partnership with Keep Brunswick-Golden Isles Beautiful. Drop Off: 3/29-30, Pick Up: 5/3-4

6 Young Playwright Workshops FREE playwriting workshops for Glynn County Middle Schools. This interactive 50minute session will review story structure, adapting a narrative, and introduce students to basic playwriting. GPS Covered: TAMS 6-8.2, ELACC6-8W3, ELACC6-8W5, ELACC7RL5, ELACC7RL7 Workshops available for ALL middle school classes through October. Eugenia Price-Joyce Blackburn Young Playwrights Award Open to all middle school students who have attended a playwriting workshop or received the Playwright s Quick Guide from Golden Isles Arts & Humanities. Entries are blind adjudicated by a panel of theatre professionals and scores are based on a provided rubric. Top three entries receive a staged reading and cash prize. All three winners are required to attend two workshop sessions to make rewrites to their play on January 9th & 16th. The staged reading and awards will be at the Historic Ritz Theater on January 21st. The deadline to submit plays is November 13th at the Historic Ritz Theatre Winners announced mid December. Reading of winning plays at the Ritz. Eugenia Price-Joyce Blackburn Young Poets Award Open to all high school students grade One winner will be chosen from each grade level THEME: Big Dreams Each winner will receive $250 cash prize and winning poems will be published locally. Up to three poems per person are accepted. Submissions must have a cover page with the following information: Writer s name, address, phone number, grade level, school name and teacher s name. Do not put your name on the page with your poem. The deadline to submit poems is February 26th at the Historic Ritz Theatre. Award presentation will be at the Historic Ritz Theatre on May 6th. 7 The Big Read 2016 Selections The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Mark Twain The Phantom Tollbooth Norton Juster The Little Big Read Glynn County Elementary Schools will receive a copy of When Pigasso Met Mootisse by Nina Laden. Traveling companion kits will be available in week increments throughout February and March. When Pigasso Met Mootisse Nina Laden At a glance: Two rivaling artists unknowingly create a masterpiece while molding a friendship which is their true work of art. The Middle Big Read Glynn County Middle Schools will receive a class set of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and upon request a class set of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Big Read is made possible by support from National Endowment for the Arts/Arts Midwest At a glance: Bored Milo is suddenly given a gift - a tollbooth. What he actually receives is a whole lot more. College of Coastal Georgia The Big Read Three Rivers Regional Libraries Glynn County High Schools will receive a class set of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. At a glance: Humor, trouble, and adventure follow Tom Sawyer everywhere from the banks of the Mississippi to the brink of death and back in Mark Twain's first full novel. * Cindy Lovell, Executive Director of the Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT will be available to visit your classroom during the second week of February (first come, first served) Marshes of Glynn Libraries The Brunswick News The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island hello Goodbuy/St Marks Episcopal Church

8 Annual Awards & Scholarships The Roberta Born Scholarship is an annual scholarship supporting one rising high school senior, graduating senior or college student exhibiting a passion and dedication to the arts. Applications are due May 27, The scholarship is named in honor of Roberta Born, a Golden Isles Arts & Humanities board member and educator who had a strong understanding of the importance of the arts and the arts in education. Application details are posted at goldenislesarts.org under the education header. Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Excellence in the Arts & Humanities Award recognizes one stand-out student in each school for exemplary work in either the arts or humanities. The faculty nominated student will be honored during the school s honors program at the end of the school year. Nomination forms will be sent to each school in April and posted at goldenislesarts.org under the education header.
