1 Learning Ally Audio App User Guide GETTING STARTED How do I buy the App? Learning Ally members in good standing can purchase Learning Ally Audio at the App Store. The Learning Ally Audio app is free. You will need an account on itunes to purchase the app. Learning Ally membership is required to use this app. How do I activate the App? The first time that you open the Learning Ally Audio App, you will need to log into your Learning Ally account. Type your username and password and click OK to log in. How do I order Learning Ally Books? Log in to your Learning Ally online account, and use the Book Catalog to search for titles and add books to your online Bookshelf. After adding books to your online Bookshelf, go to the Learning Ally Audio App to download them to your ios device. What DAISY formats work with Learning Ally Audio? Learning Ally Audio plays DAISY books that are of DAISY 2.02 standard or higher. This app does not work with other (non-learning Ally) DAISY books encrypted for copyright protection. Does Learning Ally Audio support multitasking? Yes! A user can playback a DAISY title in the background. Page 1 of 8

2 How do I download books from Learning Ally directly to my ios device? Note: You must be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi to download books. Because Learning Ally audiobooks can be quite large, it is not possible to download over a 3G network. If you don t have access to a WiFi network you can use itunes to transfer titles. From within the application, tap the Download tab to see a list of books that are on your Learning Ally Bookshelf and that are ready for downloading. Touch a book to start downloading it. After the book is downloaded, it will be installed on your device and will appear on the Listen tab. The app will only download one book at a time, but you can mark multiple books for download by touching them. As each book finishes downloading, the next book in the queue will begin. You must be connected to the Internet to view the list of downloadable books. Note: The download process will pause if you leave the Download tab or switch apps. Download will resume from where it left off the next time you start the app. How do I transfer DAISY books to my ios device using itunes? In order to transfer DAISY books to Learning Ally Audio, you will need to use itunes ver. 9.2 or higher. Users with visual impairments may find products like Blindtunes useful as they allow for greater ease of using itunes with JAWS. You can learn more at Page 2 of 8

3 If multiple students share an ios device and Learning Ally Audio, the student wishing to transfer DAISY books must be logged into the app before following the steps below. You can transfer a Learning Ally audiobook that is stored in a PC or Mac to an ios device using the following procedure: 1. Exit Learning Ally Audio if it is running. 2. Connect your ios device to your PC or Mac. 3. Launch itunes. 4. In itunes, select your device. 5. Click Apps tab. 6. Scroll down to find the File Sharing section at the bottom of the page. 7. Select Learning Ally Audio from the list. 8. Click and drag the DAISY digital talking book zip file onto the square titled Learning Ally Audio Documents, and then drop it. Or press the Add button and choose the zip file from the Choose a File:iTunes dialog. The digital talking book is transferred to the ios device immediately. 9. Launch Learning Ally Audio. When new books are loaded into Learning Ally Audio, the app will automatically load them onto the device. You will be able to use the app once it has finished loading. A message will appear at that time. Books must be packaged in a single.zip file to transfer to Learning Ally Audio. The app will not accept individual DAISY files that are not contained in a.zip file, and it will not accept books that are split among multiple.zip files. How do I remove books from Learning Ally Audio? At some point you may find yourself running out of space on your ios device. You can remove a DAISY digital talking book from your device using the following procedure: Page 3 of 8

4 1. Launch Learning Ally Audio. 2. Tap the Edit button on the Listen tab. 3. Tap the red - button to the left of the book you want to remove. 4. Tap the Delete button. How do I control Learning Ally Audio with my earphones? Single Push: Play or Pause Double Push: Forward Triple push: Backward Earphone plug in/out: Stop How can I navigate my books? To read a book, tap the book in the main bookshelf screen under the Listen tab. The app will then show the Table of Contents view. There are three tabs in this view: TOC, Page, and Bookmark. You can tap the Play button to start playback from where you left off last time. Navigating by heading The TOC tab shows all the headings in the book: sections, chapters, etc. Tap a heading to start playing the book at that point. ended. 5 Navigating by page The Page tab shows all the pages in the book. Tap a page number to start playing the book from the top of that page. To quickly go to a specific page, tap the Go to page button, enter the desired page, and touch OK. Navigating by bookmark The Bookmark tab shows all the bookmarks in the book. Tap a bookmark to start playing the book at that point. To change the name of a bookmark, touch and hold the bookmark. To delete a bookmark, tap the edit button, then tap the red - button next to the bookmark you wish to delete, then tap the Delete button. Tap Done when you are finished deleting bookmarks. 6 What do the buttons do? Changes the text size and colors. Changes the speed and pitch of reading. Move the play position back by one. Plays. Pauses play. Move the play position forward by one. The level navigation feature allows you to quickly switch your navigation settings. 7 How can multiple students share Learning Ally Audio? Learning Ally Audio can be easily shared among multiple students with different Learning Ally logins by enabling multi-user support. When multi-user support is turned on, the login information for each user is stored for later use. Bookshelves, preferences, and bookmarks for each user are kept separate for each user and will be remembered the next time they log in. To enable multi-user mode, go to the Settings screen and set Multi-User Support to ON. You can change users from the Settings screen by tapping the Logged in as button on the Settings screen, or you can use the Switch User button on the main book list screen. To switch to a user that has logged in before, just tap the user name; you will be prompted for the password. To switch to a new user account, tap the Log in as a different user button. What settings can I change? You can access most settings from the main bookshelf screen by tapping the gear icon -. Settings include: Account shows you which Learning Ally account with which you are currently logged in. Tap the Log Out button to log out of the current account and to log in to a different account. If multi-user support is on, tapping the Logged in as button will allow you to switch between users. Page 7 of 8

8 Allow in-app downloads allows you to enable or disable the download feature of the app. Play while locked turns on or off the ability of the app to play books even while the screen is locked. Re-open the last book turns on or off the ability of the app to automatically start playing the last book read. Stop playback by shaking allows you to stop playback by shaking the device. Beep volume allows you to adjust the loudness of all audio alerts, or to turn them off altogether. Send detailed usage data enables or disables reporting of data about your reading within the app. Multi-User Support enables or disables sharing the device among multiple Learning Ally accounts. Tapping About Learning Ally Audio shows you information about the version of the app. Page 8 of 8
