1 Careers for Audio Production Graduates ) Music Recording Mixer (Engineer) Description: managing and performing professional recording techniques to create a finished master recording from a myriad of elements the client or producer envisions. Requirements: internships and mentor(s), tireless enthusiasm to learn from producers, willingness to tolerate big egos, ability to enhance the musically creative process at 4:30 AM, savvy. 2) Audio Post Production to Picture Description: organizing, assembling and mixing Sound Effects, Dialogue and Musical audio elements, synchronized to picture (video or film), to create or enhance a dramatic mood of the visual element. Requirements: internships and mentor(s), understanding the video and film production process, willingness to accept that audio will be primary to film, yet secondary to video. 3) Remote Broadcast Audio Mixer (A1) Description: assembling, and precisely timing, live speech, music playback, special effects and commercial announcements as audio elements in sync with a live broadcast television or web streaming event (sports, political, religious etc.) Requirements: internships and mentor(s), learning & understanding cue timing from Technical Directors, working quickly & accurately, willingness to travel extensively. 4) Concert Sound Reinforcement Mixer (Engineer) Description: Live performance sound mixing. Classical: creating a well-defined and warm balance of sound that reinforces the natural acoustic blend of vocalists and musicians on the stage. Rock: creating a magnified, and often modified, blend of what the act s promoter wants to excite the audience.

2 Requirements: similar to Music Recording Engineer plus willingness to load, unload, & reload equipment trailers, hang from lighting scaffolds and test high voltage power distribution systems after no night s sleep. 5) Audio/Video Systems Designer Description: employed by a consultant or pro audio contractor, the AVSD analyzes the A/V application, constructs a software model, evaluates and decides on components the integration staff installs and commissions. Requirements: additional degree in Electrical Engineering, proficiency in C.A.D. programming for loudspeaker cluster design & application, ability to solve large room resonance problems on limited budgets, willingness to be criticized by Electrical Contractors and Musicians/Conductors. 6) Technical Writer Professional Audio Description: one who creates operating and service manuals for professional audio components and related systems, usually for a manufacturer. Also, one who creates technical applications content for pro audio equipment press releases. Requirements: minor in Journalism, technical expertise with all types of Commercial, Industrial, Professional and MI audio equipment, ability to translate language abnormalities, good relations with the media. 7) Professional Audio Educator Description: a full-time or adjunct faculty position within a collegiate level academic institution specializing in professional audio curriculum. Requirements: several years of varied studio & location audio production experience, outstanding communications ability to all levels of students, willingness to pursue advanced degrees, patience. 8) Professional Audio Sales Engineer Description: a self-managing, technically proficient, personable individual who accurately & objectively informs the prospect about a pro audio component or system.

3 Requirements: similar to Educator above plus business management experience, ability to troubleshoot audio system problems under pressure, willingness to be self-disciplined and well organized. 9) Professional Audio Technician Description: Tour SR Systems Tech.: expert in power distro., audio grounding & gain staging, flown speaker system rigging & related mechanical systems. Installations: expert in fabrication, installation, tuning, & upgrading a pro audio system Requirements: additional training in analog and digital circuit design, fluent background in DSP and network calibration & diagnostics, good communications ability with management and clientele, tolerance to be blamed for equipment problems. 10) Professional Audio Contractor Description: one who owns or manages a firm specializing in professional audio systems design, fabrication, installation, training & technical repair services. Requirements: apprenticeship with a qualified industrial sound systems contractor, understanding industrial & consumer business principles, ability to communicate technical matters with non-technical clientele. 11) Professional Audio Software Designer Description: combination software writer/pro audio systems applications expert. Requirements: additional training in computer programming, internships with audio software companies who focus on solving specific audio problems and create unique enhancements, willingness to be a ghostwriter until breakthrough product is recognized by the industry. 12) Pro Audio Public Relations Executive Description: writer/editor/journalist, literate in pro audio systems applications Requirements: minor in Journalism, internships with agencies within the professional audio, video and film industries, ability to work very smoothly with editors of all levels, willingness to be the liaison between the client and the press

4 when the product is targeted by competitors. 13) Audio for Gaming Production (Mixer) Description: recording, mixing, editing audio clips conformed to game software. Requirements: internships/apprenticeships with a major toy company and video game producer. Willingness to accept the priority of musical content novelty over fidelity. Stable employment with large growth potential. 14) Audio/Video Network Engineer Description: Electrical / IT Systems engineer focused on pro audio applications. Requirements: Solid digital audio and network protocols background. C.A.D. internship with an A/V integrator. Huge employment & growth potential. 15) House of Worship Audio Mixer Description: manage and operate pro audio systems for H.O.W. services. Requirements: Solid audio signal path and routing fundamentals, mixing for optimal speech articulation and music balance. Immediate employment available, yet at low to modest income. 16) Acoustical Consultant Description: degreed acoustician, focused on delivering optimized articulation of speech & music, typically for performing arts facilities. Requirements: MSEE degree, internships with tenured consulting firms, room analysis for speech intelligibility & musical fidelity, working closely with commercial architects. 17) Pro Audio Research & Development Mgr. Description: tenured audio systems mixer or designer, focused on discovering pro audio applications for new market potential.

5 Requirements: Minimum 5-7 years of analog & digital audio design and production experience, exceptional applications perception, skill at translating concepts into reality, ability to keep secrets. 18) Theatrical Sound Designer Description: audio visionary, creating the sonic theme for all elements within a theatrical production. Requirements: Fundamental knowledge of theatrical set design, lighting & choreography, internships with academic & community theater, specific focus on sound effects and timing audio cues. 19) Audio for the Forensic Sciences Description: expert audio clip editor, focused on obtaining optimal clarity for evidence gathering in law enforcement Requirements: second degree in Criminal Justice or internships with law enforcement agency crime labs, proficiency in audio waveform analysis & speech recognition software, cooperative attitude with difficult people. 20) Corporate Audio/Video Mixer Description: derivative of sound reinforcement mixer, focused on delivering optimized clarity of spoken content to local and web (remote) audiences Requirements: SR Mixer background plus knowledge of video & computer sync techniques, optimizing speech clarity, willingness to accept & understand demanding executive clientele. Very good employment potential. 21) Theme Park / Cruise Ship A-V Systems Operator Description: derivative of SR mixer, focused on mono mixes to multiple zones Requirements: SR Mixer background plus knowledge of audio networks, remote control systems, ship grounding techniques, and diagnostics.
