2 Information about the day Cost The cost of the Home Educator day at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is 6.50 per participating child. This price is the same price as a school attending a full day of activities would pay per child. This entitles each child to attend up to three sessions. Please book any sessions you wish to attend at the time of payment. Children need to be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. For information and prices please about local car parks visit: The day is designed for children aged Each child is welcome to bring along a maximum of two adults for free. Siblings under the age of 5 are welcome to attend (please note that there will not be any specific activities provided for this age group). Major roadworks are taking place near Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery at Paradise Circus. Please allow adequate time for your journey to the museum. 3 Getting to the right place Please arrive via the main entrance for Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery at Chamberlain Square, then make your way through the building to the Learning Zone. Our staff will direct you to the Learning Zone, which is at the rear of the building. Access There is a lift on Edmund Street next to the entrance for the Gas Hall. The Learning Zone is fully accessible to wheelchair users. There will be staff on hand throughout the day to help you find your sessions. Registration Please arrive at the Learning Zone within the museum by 10.15am so that you can register in good time before the first session. On registering you will be given a map of the building and your registration information. allow enough time to walk through the museum between your session locations. Please be aware that if you are late for a session you have booked on to you may be refused entry. Facilities There will be a space provided for packed lunches in the Learning Zone between and You are also welcome to use the Edwardian Tearoom. To receive a 10% discount in the Edwardian Tearoom please show the information sheet you receive at Registration on the day when placing your order. For more information about the tearoom please visit Sessions are designed to be approximately 45 minutes in duration. As the building is very large we ask that you 3

4 Coat racks will be provided but items are left at your own risk and we suggest that you keep valuables with you. Secure lockers can be found on floors 2 and 3 of the building ( 1 charge per use). Behaviour Adults are responsible for the supervision and conduct of the children at all times. Our Learning Team reserve the right to end participation in sessions if we feel that poor behaviour is affecting the enjoyment of other learners. The museum is a very busy building so it is important that children are never left unattended. Adults are politely asked not to allow children to run or shout in the museum and to be considerate to other visitors at all times. Please do not allow your child to touch the exhibits unless invited to do so by a member of staff. 4

Handle genuine artefacts from around 3000 years ago. (Please be aware that the nature of the scans means that some people may find the images graphic. Throughout the session reference will be made to death and the afterlife.) Cave Art Who? All ages Where? Art Space in the Learning Zone What? Practical art workshop led by a member of the Learning Team When? am and 2 3pm Make your own Pre-Historic style painting tools and create a painting using natural paints and similar techniques to those used to decorate caves by Pre-Historic people.

6 Hidden Treasures of the Anglo-Saxons Who? All Ages Where? History Space in the Learning Zone What? Practical history workshop led by a member of the Learning Team When? am, 12 1pm and 2 3pm Explore how the world famous Staffordshire Hoard was discovered and uncovered. Learn what this unique find tells us about the Anglo-Saxon period and try your hand at the same techniques used by our conservation team. Storytelling Exploring art with Katie Who? Under 8s Where? In the Round Room What? Storytelling inspired by our galleries and led by a member of the Learning Team When? am Join us in the Round Room for a reading of Katie and the British Artists, written by author James Mayhew. Follow Katie on her adventure through paintings created by the British Artists and spot similar paintings in our beautiful Round Room gallery. 6

Storytelling inspired by our galleries led by a member of the Learning Team When? pm Join us near the paintings of Proserpine (Persephone) and Medea and learn about the myths associated with these famous Greek and Roman characters. Painting Focus Who? Over 12s Where? Gallery 18 What? On gallery workshop led by a member of the Learning Team When? 12 1pm Focus on The Last of England by artist Ford Maddox Brown. Discover the story behind this famous painting and explore the materials and techniques used by the artist, with a chance to try your hand at sketching. 7

Find out about the Ancient Greek and the Ancient Roman civilisations. Handle real artefacts from around 3000 years ago, discuss different materials, learn how to identify old objects and what the artefacts were used for. Make an Egyptian Mask Who? All ages Where? Learning Zone Lunch Space What? Drop in craft activity led by a member of the Learning Team When? Drop in between pm Make your own cat mask. Cats were among the most important animals for the Ancient Egyptians, as they were great hunters of pests and they were connected with the goddess of protection, Bastet. 8
