2 NEWSLETTER Nr.3 FISU INSPECTION VISIT - DAY 1 November 19, 2006 Between November 19 and 23, Slovenian University Sports Association is hosting the delegation of the International University Sport Federation FISU. The Evaluation Commission is on their inspection visit to Slovenia where they are evaluating our preparation and capacity of organising the 25th Winter Universiade in The delegations arrival was welcomed by SUSA representatives and locals in traditional national costumes. After the welcome, they were taken to Ljubljana where Slovenian Tourist board prepared a presentation on Slovenia and our tourist attractions in the City Museum of Ljubljana. Despite the size of Slovenia, many sport achievements were made by Slovene athletes in several sports and categories. The delegates were briefly acquainted with these achievements, as they will be able to better familiarise with them in the following days. The delegation's task is to submit an evaluation report which will help decide which candidate will be attributed the organisation of the 25th Winter World Student Games - Winter Universiade Members of the FISU Evaluation Commission: FISU Secretary General: Roch Campana (BEL), FISU General Director: Eric Saintrond (BEL), FISU Treasurer: Roberto Outerino (ESP), FISU Executive Board Members: Pieter Tilstra (NED), Kairis Ulp (EST), and Kemal Tamer (TUR). 2

3 FISU INSPECTION VISIT - DAY 2 November 20, 2006 Delegation of the International University Sport Federation FISU started their visit to Slovenia yesterday. With the visit, they are trying to evaluate the readiness and ability of Maribor and Slovenia to organise the 25th Winter Universiade in The delegation, which is accompanied by the representatives of the Slovenian University Sports Association SUSA, was received by the President of the Olympic Committee of Slovenia Janez Kocijanãiã at 10 AM. In the pleasant atmosphere, and in the company of journalists, he expressed the support of the Slovenian umbrella sports federation for the organisation of the Winter Universiade 2011 in Maribor. 3

4 NEWSLETTER Nr.3 The delegation members were then received by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Janez Jan a. In his speech, Jan a emphasised the vast experience in organising sports events in Slovenia, and particularly mentioned the over 40-year-old tradition of organising the Zlata lisica (Golden fox) Ski World Cup. The Prime Minister expressed full support of the Government and state institutions. He added that the presence of the Minister of Education and Sport, Mr Milan Zver, and the Minister of Economy, Mr Andrej Vizjak, is a clear marker that the project is supported as a sports event, and also as an event enabling the development of the University City of Maribor, and extended region. Jan a also added that the organisation of the Universiade gives excellent opportunities for the development of university sport, and also represents a great opportunity for the tourist development of not only Maribor, but entire Slovenia. In the afternoon, FISU representatives visited the company Elan in Begunje, where they saw the process of ski manufacturing, and ended the day with a late lunch on Bled. In the evening, the delegation is on their way to Maribor, where they will continue the visit which will last till Thursday. 4

5 FISU INSPECTION VISIT - DAY 3 November 21, 2006 FISU Delegation which is on its evaluation inspection visit in Maribor these days, was present at the technical presentation of the project. The competition sites and capabilities in Maribor and Ru e were presented by top Slovene experts from various sports: Tone Vogrinec - alpine skiing, Bojan Jo t - ski jumping, Janez Pustovrh, cross country and combined, Boris âeh - Ice Hockey, Iztok Kvas - Snowboarding, Janez Vodiãar - Biathlon, Ivan Pfeifer - Ice Skating, and others. The organisers also focused on other important aspects of organising such a big event - as the Universiade definitely is - transport and logistics, accommodation, accreditation center, technical solutions, graphic design, etc. 5

6 NEWSLETTER Nr.3 From the presentations it could be deducted that Slovenia and the University City of Maribor are already ready for the Universiade In the afternoon, the delegation members visited Pohorje with the competition sites, and were present at the official opening on the renewed Tabor Ice Hall where they watched hockey match between the teams of Maribor and Ljubljana. In the evening, the delegation was received in the Maribor City Hall by the Mayor of Maribor. 6

7 FISU INSPECTION VISIT - DAY 4 November 22, 2006 The fourth day of the FISU evaluation visit, the delegation was received by the Rector of the University of Maribor Ivan Rozman. He said he was very happy with the inspection visit in Maribor, and stressed the importance of Universiade at development of Maribor and other Slovenian Universities. The Vice-Rector Du an Radonjiã presented the organisation of the University of Maribor, and pointed out the importance of sports at the University. The guests saw many advantages for the Slovenian students in organised sports activities. At the press conference, held at the Rector s Office, the speakers Mr Ivan Rozman, the Rector of the University of Maribor; Mr Boris Soviã, the current Mayor of Maribor; Mr Franc Kangler, the newly elected Mayor of Maribor; Mr Otmar Kugovnik, the President of SUSA, and Mr Roch Campana, FISU Secretary General all expressed their satisfaction with the evaluation visit. It was added, that the final decision will be made on January 16, 2007 at the 23rd Winter Universiade in Torino. Mr Franc Kangler, the new Mayor of the University City of Maribor, emphasised that he will take over the Universiade 2011 project with full responsibility and dedication, and continue to pursue this goal. 7

8 NEWSLETTER Nr.3 In the afternoon, the guests attended a special event Salutation to the Universiade from the Lent Festival at the Liberty Square, and a cultural event Sports and Culture in Kazina Hall. With the evening programme FISU delegation evaluation visit ended their, and will leave Slovenia tomorrow.
