3 EMERGE is a new program to unearth and connect new and aspiring writers across the north in the lead up to the 2016 Cairns Tropical Writers Festival. Workshop participants from Cardwell to the Torres Strait will be supported through workshops between now and June. Then at the festival on August 2016, these new writers will contribute to the unique voice of the region. ADVICE ON There are three (3) modules of the Emerge 2016 program in different locations around the region. Opt to go to just one individual workshop, or gain the greatest benefit by going the whole way through by choosing all three (3) modules in your location of choice, and at a discount cost. That way, you can also be part of the whole program, with support and networking between workshops, collaborating with other writers, and participation in the festival program. A parallel project is happening in the Torres Straits, and some of those writers will also travel to the festival. MODULE ONE $40 From Scribble to Success with Hazel Menehira and Gloria Webb Friday 18 March from 10.00am to 1.30pm at Rydges Tradewinds, 131 Esplanade Cairns or, Saturday 21 May to 4.00pm at Mareeba Library, 221 Byrnes St, Mareeba This workshop will help the new writer navigate through each step of the process of writing, developing and preparing a manuscript to the quality required for perusal by a publisher. The first part of this module will be led by Hazel Menehira FTCL, LTCL, established professional writer with 55 years in journalism and education, an acclaimed theatre director and author of 15 books. A Fellow of Trinity College in London, Hazel is an an experienced tutor and mentor for new and aspiring writers. Hazel will then hand over to Gloria Webb BA, PhD, experienced freelance editor and publisher and currently the managing director of Jabiru Publishing. Together Hazel and Gloria will blend an informative and inspirational presentation with learning springboards and strategies to assist writers in, or ready to enter, the writing-for-publication process. Attendees will be able to ask their own questions and contribute to the discussion. Book individually or choose one of the these modules for the 3 module package deal for whole program.
4 MODULE TWO $40 Getting Started with Writing with either Mark Both or Glyn Davies in the following locations ATHERTON: Hallorans Hill Observation Building, Centenary Drive, Atherton Friday 15 April 2016 from 10.00am -1.30pm with Mark Both INNISFAIL: Innisfail Shire Hall, 49 Rankin St., Innisfail Friday 22 April 2016 from 10.00am -1.30pm with Mark Both KURANDA: Kuranda Recreation Centre, Fallon Road, Kuranda Friday 6 May 2016 from 10.00am -1.30pm with Glyn Davies MOSSMAN: Mossman Shire Hall, Mill St., Mossman Friday 13 May 2016 from 10.00am -1.30pm with Glyn Davies In whichever location you choose to take this workshop, this half-day session will deal with the basics of getting started with your writing, getting in touch with your own creativity and imagination and putting that on the page, and maintaining the motivation and confidence to keep going. Participants will get to try out ideas and to write short pieces, then step back to learn how to edit them to be even better. More experienced writers will get a good refresher to get started again and the encouragement to perservere to achieve your writing goals. Both tutors have a wealth of experience is supporting both aspiring and more experienced writers. Mark Both is probably best known as a travelling musician, songwriter and performer at over 120 schools and 50 festivals in 35 countries, and more recently as director of the Tablelands Folk Festival for 5 years. He also has a background as a teacher of English as a second language, in theatre as an actor and tutor of impro, and is an experienced dance caller. Currently he is the Arts Officer for Tablelands Regional Council, but has led many creative writing workshops in community, recovery and mental health settings, including publishing books of the works of participants. Glyn Davies B.A., B. Ed (UQ), M.A. (Lond.), has had a lifelong interest in words. His interests range from drama and theatre, through to creative and academic writing. He is also a keen linguist with near-native fluency in French. For many years he was a senior lecturer at Griffith University s Education Faculty in Brisbane, teaching English and Drama. Since moving to the Atherton Tableland in 1994, he has taught writing at James Cook University and regularly reviews theatrical productions and books in Cairns and the Tableland for regional and national publications. He assists writers seeking publication or editing through his consultancy called Words that Work, and is currently working on a memoir, tentatively entitled And Gladly Teche. Book individual workshop or choose one of the these modules for the 3 module package deal for whole program.
5 MODULE THREE $75 Poets on Beaches one-day workshop with Hazel Menehira Saturday 25 June from 9.30am to 4.30pm at Kewarra Beach Resort, 80 Kewarra St, Kewarra Beach (20 mins north of Cairns City) Note the day is fully catered Additional evening and Sunday events as optional extras will be announced Hazel Menehira FTCL, LTCL, has over 40 years experience as a journalist for newspapers, teacher, speech and drama tutor, poet and mentor, mainly in New Zealand. She also had a long career in writing, performing and directing for the stage - musicals, drama and childrens theatre, before coming to settle in Cairns. She has a number of book titles, from novels to memoirs to poetry anthologies, to general how-to self-improvement books for the voice, for happiness and for life, and still maintains a regular blog. At this one day workshop in a glorious tropical setting, Hazel will introduce the beach as a central theme by sharing short extracts of the beach poetry by both iconic and established English, New Zealand and Australian poets. Taking place at the iconic Kewarra Beach Resort itself, this one-day workshop will introduce aspiring writers to the use of visuals as metaphors and will explore strategies for aspiring writers to access the creative source that will strengthen the ocean of their own verse making. Taking part on this stunning beach, themes such as spirituality, relationships, philosophy and so forth will be explored as ways to reconnect with or discover the poet within. Participants will be guided to write and develop their own poems as a memento of this special place and time, and / or to share at the Cairns Tropical Writers Festival in August. Book individually or choose one of the these modules for the 3 module package deal for whole program. STAY THE COURSE: The above is the third and final module in the Emerge 2016: new writers in the region series in the lead up to the Cairns Tropical Writers Festival. While any workshop can be taken individually, it is hoped that participants will engage with the full package of three (3) modules, available at a reduced cost. Additionally, participants will be supported to stay in touch for mutual support and sharing in between the workshops via Skype, Facebook and other platforms. As well as encouragement and support provided to actively participate in the festival itself, a selection of works will be developed for a small publication. INVESTMENT: MODULE ONE From Scribble to Success Cairns or Mareeba $40 MODULE TWO Getting Started with Writing Atherton or Innisfail $40 Kuranda or Mossman MODULE THREE Poets on Beaches (catered) Kewarra Beach Resort $75 ALL 3 MODULES all of the above Choose your location $130 If you or someone you know wants to act on this opportunity, pass this on or let us know to follow up.
