1 Activity: Starting a College Planning Book Club Objective Start a book club focused on college planning. Estimated time to complete: Continuous Guiding Questions What type of information relating to college planning would potential book club members like to learn more about? What classes, community programs, clubs, or organizations may have an interest in starting a college planning book club? Materials A High School Plan for Students with College-Bound Dreams (book and workbook) Internet access Meeting location Activity: Overview: Starting a college planning book club can provide an important support mechanism for students, expand students college knowledge, and make important connections between high school preparation and college admission. The lessons in this activity provide guidance for starting a book club and becoming a book club leader. Determine the Purpose: Consider your intentions for starting a book club. For example, will your book club focus on assisting students across grade levels or students in a particular grade level? Will your book club be focused on working with students with a specialized focus such as art or athletics? Will your book club be open to any student or limited to students on a team, in a school-based club, or who attend a faith or community organization?

2 Before soliciting members for your book club, consider the following: 1. Why are you starting a book club? What do you hope to accomplish? 2. What is the scope of work you are interested in engaging in? For example, will you focus on reading about college preparation and admissions, researching colleges, and supporting student members through the college admissions process? 3. What type of students will make up the club? 4. Will your book club be open to parents? 5. Will your book club members be affiliated with your school, team, club, faith or community organization, or neighborhood? 6. Beyond the two initial texts used to begin your book club (A High School Plan for Students with College-Bound Dreams book and workbook), what other types of books (e.g., scholarships, essay writing, student athletes, theatre, dance, music, art, etc.) will your members be interested in reading? 7. Will you be the book club facilitator? If so, for how long, and how much time can you devote to organizing meetings, refreshments and discussions? If not, will other members be willing to take on these responsibilities? 8. What are the minimum and maximum number of members your club will accommodate? (This may be dependent upon where you are meeting.) 9. When will your first meeting take place? How often will your club meet afterward? Will your book club meetings be limited to the school year or meet during the summer months and the winter holidays? How you answer these questions may depend on the grade levels of students in your club. For example, a club comprised solely of high school juniors and seniors is unlikely to have a lifespan as long as a book club comprised of ninth and tenth graders. Identify the Texts: A High School Plan for Students with College-Bound Dreams: 2nd Edition (Wynn, 2009) and A High School Plan for Students with College-Bound Dreams Workbook: 2nd Edition (Wynn, 2010) represent the foundational texts for beginning a College Planning Book Club. The book club facilitator will receive a complimentary set of activities to guide book club members through the two texts. Your book club may choose to identify additional texts based on the college and career aspirations of book club members such as books for aspiring college-bound student athletes, students interested in preparing for theatre or dance auditions, students interested

3 in applying for admission to certain types of colleges (e.g., Ivy League, HBCUs, community colleges, technical schools), etc. When prospective members contact you for more information, explain the purpose of the book club and the number of members you are seeking. Ask that they review A High School Plan for Students with College-Bound Dreams book and workbook to confirm that these are books they are interested in reading. Meeting Place: Explore the most viable meeting locations for your club: Classroom Parent Resource Center Faith or community organization Restaurant Clubhouse Library Someone s home YMCA Hotel Bookstore If the book club meets at someone s home, ideally, no one member will have to host every meeting. A book club that meets in someone s home may consist of between 5-8 members, while a book club that meets in a large community facility may consist of many members. However, large book clubs should be limited to 5-8 person discussion groups. A consistent and centralized meeting place is important. Agenda: The college planning activities used to guide your book club members through the reading and research will require an investment of time between book club meetings. You will need to determine whether your book club readings will occur at the book club meetings or if they will be pre-readings that will guide the discussions at the book club meetings.

4 Setting the agenda: Make a commitment to a date, time, and location. Set the ground rules for facilitating the discussion, ensuring that all members have opportunities to share their thoughts, and for handling disagreements. Create a sign-up sheet to record the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all book club members. Determine who will facilitate the meeting. Will the same person facilitate each meeting or will your club have rotating facilitators? What will be the format for ensuring that each person has the opportunity to share experiences and ask questions? Will you discuss each lesson in the activity or allow members to share experiences for the lessons they completed or that were of greatest interest? Will refreshments be served? Unlike a book club reading of a novel, book of poetry, or work of fiction, discussions regarding college planning will not focus on mood, character development, or imagery. The focus will be on such areas as strategy, developing a high school course schedule, choosing clubs and activities, identifying community service opportunities, developing a résumé, researching colleges, choosing high school classes, and developing solid essays. Getting Started and Identifying Members: Consider the following questions for identifying members: Will members be on a particular grade level? Will members be comprised of students and parents, mentors and mentees, community volunteers, or others? Will members be associated with a particular team, club, organization, or employer? Will new members be limited as to when they can join? Your initial club members may be comprised of only a few members such as your family and friends or may be all students in a particular grade level in a faith or community organization. Grow the club at your own pace by inviting friends, classmates, or church members. However, try to identify all potential members prior to your kickoff meeting to ensure that all members begin the reading and activities at the same time.

5 Develop a Club Identity: Give your club a name such as, College-Bound Lions, Academic SWAG, College Bound and Academically Sound, or Developing Our Plan. Consider developing a Facebook Page, Twitter account, or blog to support and communicate meeting reminders, scholarship opportunities, and other important college planning information. Consider developing a scrapbook to track the successes of your club members such as college acceptance letters, financial aid awards, scholarships, and college visits.
