5 01 POPULATION AND DEMOGRAPHY Lisbon is the capital city of a country with 10.5 million inhabitants and the Hub of a metropolitan region with 2.8 million inhabitants. Daily, the number of the city users rises from its 547 thousand residents to 925 thousand persons, due to the commuting movements (house-work and house-school). After 5 decades of population decrease, that reached 257 thousand inhabitants (1/3 of the initial population), Lisbon registered the stabilization of its population (slowing down the rhythm of demographic decrease, when comparing to the previous decades, with a record of 3% population decay in the last decade), simultaneously with the growth of the number of families and with the growth of young residents rate. 3

9 02 METROPOLITAN ENGINE OF ECONOMIC GROWTH Lisbon is the region where the majority of the national economic decision centres are located, representing 37% of the national GDP and employing 1430 thousand persons (30% of national employment), reaching an apparent labour productivity 1.3 times higher than the national average. 7

13 03 BUSINESS STRUCTURE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Lisbon region concentrates a significant number of high technology companies, being the territory where companies headquarters are located. It s also the region where the proportion of persons employed in enterprises with mostly foreign capital and the share of persons employed in high and medium-high technology manufacturing industries is higher at the national level. Lisbon as shown a good performance in foreign investment attraction (with the location and expansion of several multinational companies), revealing a good potential for the location of shared services and nearshoring, as well as for the attraction of ICT and health and well being companies. 11

19 04 QUALIFIED HUMAN CAPITAL Lisbon labour market is built on highly competitive, multilingual, creative, flexible and qualified human resources. More than ¼ of Lisbon inhabitants has tertiary education, with a competitive wage level, comparing with other European cities. The Lisbon region concentrates ¼ of national active and employed population, the unemployed population reaches 205 thousand persons and the activity rate stays a few points below the national average, particularly in the population with 45 years old or more. 17

23 05 CITY OF KNOWLEDGE AND INNOVATION In Lisbon the expenses on Research and Development (R&D) reaches 2.1% of regional GDP, a very significant level in the European regional context. With nearly students enrolled in tertiary education, in 2012 more than students graduated at tertiary education institutions, with particular relevance in the areas of business and administration, health, social sciences and engineering, which accounted for more than 50% of the graduates. The Lisbon region concentrates more than 50% of national R&D expenditures and the company s share of the expenditures is higher. 21

29 06 AN ECONOMY OPEN TO THE WORLD Capital city, with several ports in its hinterland, Lisbon is considered from long time a privileged commercial platform for different continents. With easy access to 500 million European consumers, it has a modern network of highways, railroads and other transport and logistics infrastructures. Lisbon has an excellent geostrategic position, with strong business and economic connections with seven Portuguese speaking countries, that makes the location in the city ideal for companies who wants to export or invest in those markets. The importance of international trade has been growing in the region, originating more than 1/3 of national exports and the destination of more than half of national imports. In 2012 the exports registered a growth of more than 30% in the last 5 years. 27

35 07 A REFERENCE IN TOURISM AND CREATIVE EVENTS Lisbon is the destination of more than 4 million tourists per year, half of them originated from foreign markets, with particular importance for Spain, Brazil, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Ireland.
