23 March 2012 Greetings from St Bede s The second half of the term invariably sees many activities coming to a culmination which means an increase in effort and energy round the place. This newsletter reflects such a week athletics and swimming regional finals, regional and national touch competitions, the build-up to the Maadi cup for the rowers next week, the 10s rugby competition and its final match, the cricketers progress in the Gillette cup, preparation for the stage challenge, the Sheila Winn Shakespeare festival, Pacifika Festival, and the build-up to the Bishop Lyons Shield (the Catholic secondary schools competition for public speaking, debating, scripture reading and religious questions). So there is an urgency round the College and it is not lost on me that all these activities happen because of the good will and the generosity of staff, old boys and many parents who go to considerable lengths (and expense) to ensure our boys participate and compete to the best of their ability. At assembly we recognised some of these achievements, but the message was a promotion of a Bread and Water day to be held next Friday, to raise the awareness of the meaning of Lent, not only of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, but also of through an effective video highlighting of issues round social justice in a global sense. I hope it drove home the message that all the opportunities, the comforts of life we get in this country are for a very few of the world s population. Joe Barclay s reflection is worth sharing in full, which I leave you with until next week. Top weekly notes Term 1 Week 7 Bread and Water Reflection. One night, these newly weds were preparing a roast for dinner. While preparing the roast, the bride cut off a few inches from the end of the roast. When she was asked why she did this, she replied, "I don't really know, but my mother always did it that way." When she asked her mother for the reason for this curious custom, her mother replied, "I do it because my mother always prepared her roasts that way." So she visited her grandmother one day and asked her the same question. "I always had to cut off a bit from the end, her grandmother said, because my only plate was too small." Her grandmother had a good reason for what she did, but the others had repeated the practice for no good reason other than "that's the way my mother did it." In some ways, this is how we fast. We fast without knowing exactly why. We just know that it's something that should be done. As we live through Lent, and fast, we will probably be told about various practices or instructed about certain customs about fasting. Someone may tell us that we are not to eat meat during Lent; perhaps someone else will tell us to not have any dairy products; or perhaps we will be told to curb our diet in other ways. In most instances, we are told to do these things without being told the reason why. What exactly, then, is the reason for fasting? One answer might lie in the story of a wealthy businessman who went to retreat at a distant monastery. His journey to the monastery was a sincere one; it was a journey in which he wished to grow closer to God. When he arrived at the monastery, he was warmly greeted. Later, he was brought before the abbot of the monastery to seek spiritual direction. While in the presence of the abbot, the abbot asked the man if he would like a glass of water. When the man responded with a yes, the abbot began to pour him some Y9 Y10 Y11 Y12 Y13 Caleb Simpson Lachie Bartlett Anaru Matai Sam Collins Chris Boniface Matthew Everingham

water. The abbot poured and poured until the water reached the very tip of the glass; but he didn't stop! Instead, he kept pouring and pouring so that the water overflowed the rim of the glass; ran onto the table; and drenched the expensive suit which the man was wearing. Jumping up in frenzy, the man yelled at the abbot, What are you doing? Look at what you did to my suit! Turning to the man, the abbot said, You are like this glass of water. You are so full of concerns concerns for riches and other anxieties of the world. You are completely full. There is no space for you to hold anything else inside. There is no room for God to come in. Before God can come in, you must empty yourself and make room for Him to enter. The reason for fasting, then, is precisely this: Fasting is a way of emptying ourselves from the cares and concerns of this world A means of preparation and conditioning, which will enable us to serve God and grow closer to Him. Preparation for God's service was the very reason why some of the greatest witnesses of the faith fasted; this can be observed in our gospel reading today when Christ himself fasted for forty days in the desert. Yet how is it that fasting prepares us? True fasting prepares us to receive God. By removing those obstacles, we make room for God to come into our hearts and refill the glass of our lives with His message. For as Christ said, Man cannot live by bread alone. Fasting is thus a way for us to empty all the things which take up room and fill the glass of water, which is ourselves. If fasting is not accompanied by good works, then that fast is dead. If fasting becomes merely an exercise of abstaining from food, then it s true purpose has become lost. The true nature of fasting shows that the rituals of a life lived faithfully before God is not empty gestures. They usually have profound meaning and can point us in the direction of realities far greater than ourselves. An important part of living our faith is in knowing our faith and putting it into action, and this is why we will encourage everybody to fast and donate food for our Lenten appeal. Why do we cut off that small portion at the end of the roast? What is the reason for fasting? As a Christian, don't be satisfied with the response "that's the way my mother did it."; don t be satisfied with following things blindly when it comes to the practice of your faith; rather, as best as you can, make and active attempt to learn more about your faith and live it out. Justin Boyle Rector Mr Gerry Davidson Deputy Rector - Pastoral Homestays needed for a rugby team from Los Angeles (20 boys: Three nights April 3/4/5) Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF) offers some form of rugby coaching to over 4,000 elementary, junior and senior school students the South Los Angeles area, and over 200 of those junior and senior high school boys and girls playing competitive 15-a-side rugby every season. ICEF Rugby promotes the idea of balance in life between sport and academics and focusses on encouraging the young players to push themselves to get marks good enough to give them options in tertiary studies. The touring group goes to Tahiti, then through the North Island, before coming to Christchurch on Tuesday April 3rd. St. Bede s is asked to provide homestays for 20 boys on the Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday of that week (3 rd, 4 th and 5 th ). Their boys team will play an SBC U16 selection on Wednesday the 4th and then join in the CBHS Festival from the 5 th. Their girls team will play Burnside HS (twice) and Canterbury Schoolgirls.

If you could help with accommodation it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Mr Davidson if you are able to billet one of these boys. Road Rule Changes At this weeks assembly we discussed with the boys the new road rule changes and how they would in particular affect those boys bringing cars to school. The diagrams from the NZTA website show the situation that exists at the turn from the Main North Road into Momorangi Crescent. Please also note that there have been a number of near misses at this point when cars are turning right into Momorangi Crescent and both lanes of south-bound traffic have stopped to allow the car to turn. Cars must turn slowly being mindful of cyclists, motor cyclists and even buses using the bus lanes. These road users can be virtually invisible until the last moment. While Parents, Staff and Students have all had close calls there have been a number of collisions both turning into Momorangi and the school entrance. We ask that all members of our community take great care when negotiating these turns. Web safety On Monday 23 rd April (first day of Term 2) there will be an internet safety presentation for parents in the Performing Arts Centre from 7-8pm. This will bring parents up to date with the latest concerns facing children today, empower them to know how to manage technology easily in the home, and will supply resources for further information. All students will have specially developed year level presentations that day during school time. MAIN NORTH RD Monday 23 April PAC 7-8pm Mrs Nola Kilpatrick Deputy Rector Curriculum Yr 9 & 10 Parent Interviews Wednesday 4 April 4 7 pm The first round of parent interviews begin in the last week of term with interviews for students in Yr 9 and 10. Bookings must be made on line and information regarding this process will be ed to you shortly. NCEA Course Endorsement Over recent weeks we have profiled merit and excellence level endorsement. Last year course (or subject) endorsement was introduced to reward and acknowledge student achievement further. Course endorsement criteria requires a student to gain 14 or more Merit/Excellence credits for a course/subject in a single year and at least 3 credits at Merit/Excellence from an externally assessed standard and 3 credits from an internally assessed standard (except RE, PE & L3 Visual Arts). Your sons target interviews last week included setting course endorsement goals.

PTA Hot Dog Wednesday The PTA $2 Hot Dog Wednesday has been proving extremely popular! A huge thank you to this team of dedicated parents for mucking in and providing this service in the current absence of a tuck shop. This will run until the end of term at this stage. Parent Focus Newsletter Article this week is on Living Learning Focus. Mrs Rachel Pitcaithly Ministry Team Coordinator This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Bishop Barry, Frs Rod Milne, Simon Eccleton, Jack O Connor and Job Thaickalamury into the College to offer Reconciliation to our Y12 Theology of the Body classes. Fr Jack also said Mass for these students on Friday morning and Fr Chris Friel was here for Benediction. It is wonderful to have our local priests on site and we are very grateful for their generosity with their time. Mrs Karen Fitzpatrick - PTA Next week we will have our College Bread and Water day. Joe Barclay has described the purpose of this in his assembly speech which you can read in the newsletter. We ask that all Bedeans, staff and students participate in this. This will mean eating only plain bread and drinking water only throughout the school day. The college will provide one slice of bread at break and three at lunch time. As part of our Lenten almsgiving we ask that each student and staff member brings in either tinned food or muesli bars for lunches which we will give to the City Mission. CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME Catholics Returning Home, a four week programme for non-practising Catholics interested in renewing their life in the Church starts soon. 6 Mrs Emily Templeton St Bede's College Nurse Blood Donation NZ Blood will be coming to the college next Tuesday, the 27 th March to collect blood from boys and staff between 9am and 2pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to commence a possibly life-long service of helping to save lives in our community. Each blood donation can save three lives! The basic criteria required to donate are: being 16 years of age or older, weighing 50kg or more and being in general good health. There are others that will be discussed with the boys on the day in a one to one interview. There is an appointment schedule with Mrs Davidson where the boys need to enter their name in order to donate, and grab a leaflet at the same time. It is highly recommended and encouraged that the boys that wish to donate discuss this with their parents/ caregivers prior to the day. Influenza Vaccination It is that time of year again and the Ministry of Health is again offering FREE Influenza vaccines to all young people under the age of 18. The College GP, John Coughlan and myself will be running a clinic to do these on Wednesday, 28 th March at 7.30 am for an hour or so. Boys need to come to the Health Centre before school starts if possible. All boys under the age of 16 will need to have parental consent for this vaccine. The easiest way of doing this is for you to write a note with the name of your son, stating you agree to him having the vaccination and signing this. Boys will need to bring this with them to the clinic on the morning. If this doesn t suit and you want your son vaccinated, please see your own GP/ Practice Nurse at your family medical centre. Medallists are decided with two days of finals on Friday and Saturday. The Maadi cup regatta starts on Sunday with an opening ceremony, including a parade of schools with competitors marching through the town of Twizel at 1.45pm.

Maadi Cup Regatta by the numbers: 48 events 409 races 6 days of racing 118 schools competing (2 from Australia) 1,781 pupils - 1,288 crews Images from the Silverstream traditional Cricket: The 1 st XI had a nail biting game against St Andrews College in the 3 rd round of the Gillette Cup. St Andrews were all out after the 48 th over for 207. Jack Boyle and James Tucker featured in a good partnership of 120. Jack watched as others lost their wickets at the other end, but to his credit he did not panic, when it came down to the wire, SBC needed 25 runs to tie off 24 balls. In the last over we needed a run a ball and on the last ball we took a run to make the game a tie with 207 runs each. Because we had bowled St Andrews all out we won. Congratulations must go to Jack Boyle for scoring 96 run not out and steering the team to a win. The following players have scored more than 100 runs or taken 5 or more wickets Sam Hall took 6 for 23 off 6 against North West Cricket, Hamish Kennett 5 for 22 off 14 against C.B.H.S. 4 th XI 2012 and Declan McCormick scored 122 runs against Super Touch: We would like to wish the Senior A team all the very best for the weekend as they are playing in the South Island Secondary School Touch Championships at Belfast Park. I know they would appreciate any support Rugby: Trials U18 are being held this Sunday at 2.00pm on the back field. U14 and U13 pre-season training is being held on Tuesday and Thursday after school on the back field. This is a great achievement by these

two young men. Both are old boys of our sister school Higashi Fukuoka HS, and in fact Yoshikazu is still officially a high school student until April 1. Richie McCaw visited the College yesterday and worked with all the open side flankers. This was a great opportunity to work with such a humble person. Richie spent two hours with the boys an hour longer than he was scheduled and the boys certainly got a thrill working with him. Thanks to the Canterbury Rugby Union for arranging his visit. Matthew Rollinson Dr John Crowley Peter (Zuke) Horgan Terry Bligh Please keep in your thoughts and prayers Terry O Malley who has been in hospital for several days. During the week the deaths occurred of two old boys from the beginning class in PJ Zuke Horgan ( ) was one of six boys who came from Temuka that year. He is remembered as a very tough forward in the 3 rd XV of 1970 and was part of a group of boarders who tested the boarders discipline master, Fr. Jim Dooley, at times to the limit. He lived much of his life in the Temuka area. Terry Bligh ( ) came to St Bede s from Loretto College. His was a quiet student and went on to Canterbury University and then on to a long and successful career as a secondary school teacher. At the time of his passing he was working at St Thomas s. A colleague said of him Terry was a real gentleman, a passionate teacher and was generous with his time and effort for the boys career needs. He is sorely missed.
