1 Update Report April 2016 The academic year has already been a busy one in the SHINELabs across London. This report will serve as an update on what has been accomplished so far and what is set to take place in the immediate future. Key Activities: Best Practice Days: December 2015 and February SHINELabs Training: Primary Science CPD: With Carole Kenrick at Lab_13, January PSTT Training: Scientific Literacy: I Can Explain February Setup of SHINELabs complete in the majority of the six schools Additional funding of 46,000 secured in April 2016.

2 School Updates Daubeney Primary School The school have completed the conversion of the old London Transport bus and the space is undoubtedly unique, creative and striking! The opening ceremony is due to take place towards the end of April Daubeney s partner secondary school has also confirmed their involvement. A good to outstanding teacher has been secured to oversee the sessions for 10 weeks alongside the 4 Year 10 students. The pupils taking part in the after-school sessions have been identified and a parent s meeting has been scheduled to introduce them to the space and resources. SHINELabs after school sessions are due to begin from Thursday 20th June (3:30-5pm). Hill Mead School Furniture and resources have been delivered and pupils across the school have been given the opportunity to explore the new science lab. Key Stage 2 students have been identified as the most suitable year group for recruiting technicians. During the upcoming science week the newly recruited lab technicians will take more responsibility within the lab itself. Training and consultation with the wider school staff has also taken place and feedback has been very positive from all members of staff. Identifying the cohort for the after-school sessions is underway: Mixture of 12 year 4 and 8 year 5 students. After consultation with the wider school a focused science lesson has been added to the timetable each week, to begin in the upcoming term. This will improve the science curriculum coverage and eneable focussed assessment of the students and their ability to apply the scientific knowledge they are accessing.

3 Kingswood Primary School The SHINELab has been completed and the dedicated classroom has already hosted science classes within the school. Resources have been ordered and installed including engaging decorations and displays. Science classes have been timetabled and made available to the wider school. Student lab technicians have been recruited. Liase with SENCO to identify the 20 students who will attend the afterschool club. Meet with head of sixth-form to discuss crest award for their students. Pakeman Primary School The school is due to install an Ecopod classroom in the playground to house the SHINELab. While they are waiting for the lab to be built and installed they have been running a variety of science activities for the whole school. During Science Week, 24 young leaders (known as The Science Crew ) from years 4-6 took part in an innovative collaborative flagship education event called: Minerva Scientifica- The Franklin Effect. This cohort of students has also been undertaking science experiments during the lunch break The momentum has been maintained through all of the extra activities while the school waits for the building and installation of the SHINELab. Strong links already exist between Pakeman and their secondary partner school. Once the lab is installed they will begin to recruit students to run the after school club. Having this inspiring lab environment will make a huge difference to how and what we teach our children in science as it will expand the opportunities for them to gain science knowledge and handson experience of conducting scientific experiments. 4 Stebon Primary School The SHINELabs is now resourced, decorated and in use. Each class at the school has been invited to decorate the lab in order to foster a sense of ownership and interaction. Teachers are beginning to book the lab to undertake focused science lessons in the standard school timetable. Lab technicians from years 4 and 5 have been recruited. Competition was tough with a large amount of applications received. The lab and the teachers who use it are focussing on the National Curriculum s Working Scientifically statements. In turn the students are being encouraged to self-evaluate their own progress, an element which encourages them to take ownership of their own learning. Continue to engage with a nearby university and secondary school to forge links and recruit mentors. Will continue work in identifying the target pupils for the after school program. Wellington Primary School The building work to adjust exisiting classrooms has been completed and furniture and a sink has been installed in the new space. The school s existing science resources have been collated and organised ready to be stored and accessed in the SHINELab. The new SHINELabs lead at the school, Abigail Gerrard has attended all the CPD sessions and is planning on delivering further CPD for other staff at the school. Still at the early stages of organising the after-school club. They are liasing with Queen mary University in London, through the Poplar Partnership, in order to establish a support network. The new SHINELab is an exciting space. It s great that the students helped with the layout and are owning the space. I thought the range of equipment and resources diverse and exciting. SHINELabs School Governor

5 Future Plans SHINELabs Phase Two: In April 2016 we were delighted to receive confirmation of additional funding that will allow us to establish three new SHINELabs in London. Wendell Park Primary School, Hammersmith and Fulham (supported by a major donor): This school currently runs the SHINE on Saturday programme with great success and would be a valuable addition to the SHINELabs cohort. Wendell Park is a larger than average primary school and the proportion of pupils who are eligible for the Pupil Premium is much higher than the national average. Wendell Park has a long-established tradition of Saturday classes and of finding opportunities to extend and enrich the curriculum both within and outside the school day. St. Elizabeth Primary School, Tower Hamlets (existing partner school of Bloomberg): St. Elizabeth s is situated in an area od deprivation within the Tower Hamlets borough of London. With medium to high free school meals eligibility and a similar level of students where English is their second language, the school would benefit greatly from additional support. Bloomburg has an established and successful partnerhip already in place at this location.
