2 When Vanessa was diagnosed with cancer our world came to a halt. We were absolutely devastated. Through the help and support of NCCA UK Vanessa accessed pioneering treatment and is now enjoying life after neuroblastoma. They have been absolutely invaluable to us and we can t thank them enough. (Chris Riddle Father to Vanessa who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 8 years old.) Neuroblastoma The NCCA UK Neuroblastoma is an extremely aggressive childhood cancer. Affecting the nervous system, it can spread quickly throughout the body. In most cases neuroblastoma is only diagnosed once it has already progressed to a high risk stage. A significant number of children never achieve remission and even for those tested clear of neuroblastoma, dangerous relapses are common. Survival rates in neuroblastoma have lagged behind the recent improvements in other childhood cancers and treatment paths for the most serious cases are limited. Although rare compared to other cancers, with a low survival rate neuroblastoma is a significant cause of child death. The NCCA UK (Neuroblastoma Children s Cancer Alliance UK) helps families affected by neuroblastoma. We offer Family Support Services and activities which fall into three main areas: Access to Treatment, Research and Education and Awareness. Our research work focuses on developing new, efficient treatments in the UK and introducing the best treatments already available elsewhere. We strive to provide the clear and concise information that families need. We fundraise for families who are unable to access comparable UK treatments or choose therapies that are only available abroad. All treatments are approved by the family s UK oncologist. 3 As a keen cyclist I was eager to get involved when approached with the challenge. It was a real team effort cycling and a great chance to meet new people. The difference with this challenge is that you can directly see who you are benefitting. It was so rewarding to see the children open their presents in London and meet the people behind the charity, they were extremely supportive. (Tim Bennett, Dell employee, cycled from Amesbury to London) Cycling Santas Cycling Santas is an annual feat of festive endurance that charges Santas with a very important mission to cycle miles across the country delivering Christmas presents to children, all affected by neuroblastoma and other paediatric cancers UK-wide. For families battling neuroblastoma, Christmas is an important time to make their child feel extra special and create those precious memories; Cycling Santas helps to do just that! Determined participants battle with the elements and distances to bring together families and their wider communities to raise awareness and funds. The Journey This year s 200 Cycling Santas will ride over 300 miles between London, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The route is designed so that participants can get involved in the complete journey or one (or more) of the five day events. Day 1: London- Oxford Day 2: Birmingham Chester 60 miles Glasgow Edinburgh Day 3: Chester Manchester Belfast Day 4: Edinburgh Glasgow Day 5: Belfast Belfast Chester Manchester 40 miles 80 miles Birmingham Oxford 65 miles London *The NCCA UK reserves the right to change the route or itinerary for safety reasons should local conditions dictate. 4 Cycling Santas 2013 The Highlights On 1st December our heroes visited 7 year old Ryan Edwards who had been fighting neuroblastoma for six years. Eager to see the Santas, the family organised a welcoming committee comprised of fundraisers, family and friends at their local pub. On the way to Bracknell our heroes stopped at corporate sponsors Dell, to pick up the presents donated by the employee Giving Tree. They were then joined by 8 Dell employees on their route to London. In London a Christmas Drinks Reception was held at The Langham Hotel and attended by comedian Rob Brydon! Our Santas then brought gifts and smiles to children at Leeds General Infirmary. Generating huge amounts of press coverage our heroes visit was covered by ITV Calendar, York Press, Yorkshire Evening Post, Selby Times, and Stray FM to name but a few. After a few well deserved beers the boys were back on their bikes where they visited Lilly in Dunstable and Anya in Chester. Next the santas visited Strawberry Fields primary School where pupils staged a mass santa ride around the playground to support their classmate Joseph. Back on their bikes on 8th December our Santas cycled from Dalbeattie to Troon backed by the support team and cycling club Fullarton Wheelers. We had such a fantastic time when the Cycling Santas visited the Toby Carvery in Exeter. They had a real welcoming committee and Ryan could barely contain his excitement. He got exactly what he wanted, we couldn t wipe the smile off his face! Moments like this are rare for families affected by childhood cancer which was why this moment was so special to us. 6 It was definitely one of the hardest challenges of my life. Cycling up to 100 miles every day was such hard work but it was so rewarding to see the children so happy. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they received presents made it all worthwhile. It s a completely different fundraising challenge that proved extremely popular. We had so much support and the public really got behind the cause. (Paul Christie (Neuroblastoma Hero) cycled 800 miles in 7 days.)
