1 3rd 5th Grade Objectives Students will identify geometry terms and correctly match them to corresponding figures. Students will build and identify angles, 2-D shapes and 3-D shapes. Materials Needed Geometry Match-Up Cards Geometric Figure Building Cards Recording sheet reproducible and answer key Toothpicks Gumdrops Paper plates Scissors [FB316] Tape Pencils [SU28] Products with item numbers are available at LakeshoreLearning.com. Preparation Print and cut apart the Geometry Match-Up Cards. Put a loop of tape on the back of each card. Display the cards on the classroom board (or use a document camera), grouping the word cards on one side and the picture cards on the other side. Print a copy of the recording sheet reproducible for each student. Procedure 1. Explain to students that you are going to review geometry terms and their meanings. 2. One at a time, have volunteers come to the board. Prompt them to choose a word and match it to the corresponding picture. Invite the other students to affirm or correct each volunteer s choice. 3. As students match the words and pictures, reinforce the meaning of each term. For example, say, An acute angle is an angle that measures less than 90 degrees or A hexagon is a figure with six equal sides. Independent Practice 1. Divide students into pairs. Provide each pair with the Geometric Figure Building Cards, a recording sheet, 35 gumdrops, 50 toothpicks and a paper plate (to use as a building surface). 2. Instruct students to use the toothpicks and gumdrops to build the shapes and angles on the cards. 3. After students have built each shape or angle, have them draw it on the recording sheet. Prompt students to fill in the missing information. Check answers using the answer key. 4. Encourage students to remove the toothpicks and enjoy their gumdrops as a snack! Lakeshore

7 Make a Right Angle Use 2 toothpicks and 1 gumdrop to make a right angle. A right angle is a square corner. It measures 90º. Make an Acute Angle Use 2 toothpicks and 1 gumdrop to make an acute angle. An acute angle measures less then 90º.

8 Make an Obtuse Angle Use 2 toothpicks and 1 gumdrop to make an obtuse angle. An obtuse angle measures more than 90º. Make an Equilateral Triangle Use 3 toothpicks and 3 gumdrops to make an equilateral triangle. An equilateral triangle has 3 sides that are all the same length.

9 Make a Square Use 4 toothpicks and 4 gumdrops to make a square. A square has 4 sides that are the same length. Make a Hexagon Use 6 toothpicks and 6 gumdrops to make a hexagon. A hexagon has 6 equal sides and 6 vertices.

10 Build a Cube Use 12 toothpicks and 8 gumdrops to build a cube. A cube is a special kind of rectangular prism. All of its faces are square. Build a Square Pyramid Use 8 toothpicks and 5 gumdrops to build a square pyramid. A square pyramid has 4 triangular faces that meet in a point. Its fifth face is a square.

11 Build a Triangular Prism Use 9 toothpicks and 6 gumdrops to build a triangular prism. A triangular prism has 2 opposite faces that are triangles. The other faces are rectangles.
