3 Renewable Energy The demand for renewable energy has increased significantly throughout the world. Simple, affordable and environmentally friendly solutions are being sought for our energy supply. The energy potential of our rivers with low gradients from 1 3 m and water volumes of m 3 /s and more is substantial. Vortex technology harnesses this potential in the best possible way. Vorteco Micro Plant (2-12 kw) Vorteco Power Plant ( kw) Vorteco Twin Power Plant ( kw) Compared to other small hydropower generation systems, vorteco power plants strike an optimal balance between environmental impact and cost / performance ratios. Operating Principle Before the barrage, the water flows via an inlet channel into the rotation basin, forms a vortex and flows back into the river through an opening in the bottom of the basin. The dynamic force of the vortex is converted into mechanical rotational energy and subsequently into electrical energy by the turbine and generator. Electrical energy is fed via the electronic control unit into the public grid or directly to the user (island mode / off shore operation). 4 Environmental Applications Optimized Engineering Solutions to improve the River Corridor / Revitalization Ecologically intact watercourses are key for long-term and sustainable water / land management and are important for our well-being. We want to make a sustainable contribution to the future energy supply (restoring watercourses). River Corridor / Revitalisation Situation: Interrupted Watercourses River control structures were built mainly for flood protection, land reclamation and energy generation (streams were corrected / culverted). Flood plains (wetlands) were drained and the land was used for agricultural / industrial purposes. Implementation: EU Water Framework Directive / Swiss Federal Water Protection Act / DWA (German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste) Determining river basin management measures for revitalization, water level fluctuation, bedload transport and fish passage. These establish the conditions to ensure that the natural dynamic processes of watercourses are restored. Creating a Near-natural State As Vortex Power Plants can be installed next to an existing river barrier, it is possible to improve and revitalize the river corridor at the same time. Expenditure for ecological restoration can be amortized by income gained from plant operation this also relieves taxpayers. Taken into account are different use and protection interests such as residential estates, agriculture, energy generation, fishery, water protection, nature conservation, protection of birds etc.
5 Ecological Evaluation When establishing Vortex Power Plants the following ecological enhancements can be realized: Upgrading of the stream course and parts of the river bank (enlarged and formed in harmony with nature) Possibility to remove existing river dykes Safeguarding of the aquatic fauna migration Establishment of new, appropriate biotopes for endangered species Increase in attractiveness of recreational areas Realizing nature trails Biodiversity Due to the possible aquatic and terrestrial optimization of biotopes as a consequence of establishing Vortex Power Plants and due to the poor influence caused by the running of the plant it can be assumed that the biodiversity can be improved on the site. On establishing future Vortex Power Plants preliminary and later studies (monitoring) can be performed in order to provide evidence of improvement. Fish Migration Low velocity water flow 8 and special turbines 7 with low rotational speed enable fish passage. Fish passes can be installed in or next to the power plant for fish migration in accordance with requirements of the fishery authorities Fig.: Fish migration (2011, CH Patent 01444/11 vorteco) Integrated fishpass 1 with natural substrate 3 and adjusted gradient as well as an optimized flow rate. The attraction flow at the entrance to the fish passes is regulated according to the fish region 4.
6 Technical Applications Optimized Energy Solutions for Renewable Energy Generation The installations are designed to optimize power generation of existing (licensed) water withdrawals. Automatic control units for water and energy management can be integrated into the existing power plant monitoring systems. Remote supervision minimizes on-site personnel requirements and maximizes energy production. Examples of applications: residual water flow channels at dams, weirs and wastewater outlets
7 Social Applications Robust Solutions for Energy Production in decentralized Areas (Island Mode Operation / Off Shore) The energy demand in newly industrialized countries is increasing and will develop into a prosperity factor. In particular, renewable energies are too expensive for many population groups. Use of renewable energy should be possible for all levels of society and regions to enable access to information (TV, Internet), medical assistance (hospitals) and production of drinking water etc. Our standardized and modular installations in steel or cement are simple to install and put into operation.
