2 ENTRY LEVEL PROGRAMS: EXPLORE Entry level programs are one day programs that allow a student to try a program and be introduced to interesting natural areas in Red Wing. EXPLORE THE CANNON BOTTOMS Age minimum: 6 th grade Fee: $15.00 This one day adventure is an amazing opportunity to get out and explore an area right out our back door. The Cannon Bottoms area is over 2700 acres of wilderness and the winter time is one of the best times to be out in it. We will look for various signs of animal life, explore beaver lodges and simply enjoy the great outdoors in the winter. Dates (choose one): Group 1 Group 2 December 10th January 20 th 9:00 am-3:00 pm 9:00 am-3:00 pm CORE PROGRAMS PIONEERING I Minimum Age: 6 th grade Fee: $45.00 Live like those who first arrived in Minnesota by taking on the pioneering life. You will stay in a log cabin built by students who came before you. As you learn the survival skills of a pioneer, you will split wood, cook over a fire, maintain the trails and experience the luxury of a sauna. Activity Cabin Skills: Overnight: Group I December 27 th 10am-2 pm December 28 th December 29 th 3:00 pm -11:00 am
3 CORE PROGRAMS CROSS COUNTRY SKIING I Age minimum: 6 th Grade Fee: $45.00 From cross country skiing techniques to dressing properly for the cold, this program will prepare you to explore the woods in the spectacular season of winter. Ski local trails, see tracks and signs of wildlife. ski. ELC will provide equipment. Pick a group. Activity Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Orientation January 9 th January 24 th January 30 th Session 2: January 10 th January 25 th January 31 st Session 3: January 12 th *12:00-5:00 pm January 26 th *February 1 st 12:00 pm-5:00 pm Session 4: January 13 th 4:00-8:00 pm Moonlight ski January 28 th 9:00 am-3>00 pm February 3 rd 4:00-8:00 pm Moonlight ski CROSS COUNTRY SKIING II Age minimum: 7th Grade Prerequisites: Cross Country Skiing I Fee: $ Time to head to the North Shore. There we will ski the local rivers and trails, cook delicious meals, and play games in the cozy ELC cabin. Pick a group Activity Group 1 Group 2 Orientation/Skills: December 21 st 3:30-8:00 pm January 17 th 3:30-8:00 WINTER SURVIVAL I Age minimum: 7th Grade Fee: $45.00 Learn the basics of winter camping, including: Fire building skills and outdoor cookery. Ice crossing and basic ice rescue. Animal track identification. Prevention and treatment of hypothermia and frostbite. We will camp where weather and snow conditions permit. 4 CORE PROGRAMS WINTER SURVIVAL II Age minimum: 8th Grade Prerequisite: Winter Camping I Fee: $ Three days of winter camping, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Travel on cross country skis and build snow shelters. Learn and practice skills necessary for safe and enjoyable winter exploration. We ll go to the Porcupine Wilderness Area near Drummand, WI. Activity Orientation/skills: Trip: Leave Return: Wrap up: Date/Time February 14 th 3:30-7:30 pm *February 17th 8:00 am February 19 th 3:00 pm March 1 st 6:00 pm -7:30 pm WHITEWATER KAYAKING I Minimum Age: 8 th grade Fee: $25.00 Come learn the basics of whitewater kayaking in the YMCA pool. We ll work on paddle strokes, balance, and rolling techniques. At the end of the day we ll play water polo in our kayaks. Prerequisite for Whitewater II and III Must Attend all Dates Activity / Time Group 1 Group 2 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm January 10 January 16 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm January 11 January 17 Skills: 7:00 pm 8:30 pm January 12 January 18 WHITEWATER KAYAKING AND RAFTING III SPRING BREAK WHITEWATER TO NORTH CAROLINA Fee: $ ($100 nonrefundable deposit due December 1 st required to hold spot) Prerequisite: Whitewater I and II and two addition pool days this winter to refresh your skills. Pick two of the open YMCA clinic days (additional fee to YMCA prices on next page). Whitewater Kayaking III will be held in western North Carolina. Rivers to paddle will be the Nantahala, Green River, French Broad, and the Chattooga River. Participants will learn whitewater safety, paddling techniques, river etiquette, and group cooperation (long van ride). The week will be spent car camping and paddling the mountain rivers. 5 ELECTIVES ICE CLIMBING Minimum Age: 8 th Grade Prerequisite: None Fee: $25.00 Come learn the basics of ice climbing in the backyard of Ed Ward and Heather Nagel. They are farming ice to climb. No experience or equipment needed.-just the desire and a little physical fortitude. Pick a group: Group 1 Group 2 February 7 th February 10 th 3:30 pm 8:30pm 3:30 pm 8:30pm YOUNG WOMEN IN THEWOODS Minimum Age: 6 th grade Fee: $40.00 Meet up with fellow female ELCers for a few adventures throughout the winter season. Activities will include sledding, indoor bouldering, hiking, and some good ol cabin time. Activity/Time Cabin Fun Sledding Indoor Climbing Date December 13 th 3:30-7:00 pm December 20 th 3:30-6:00 pm February 1 st 3:30-6:00 pm ICE FISHING Minimum Age: 6 th grade Fee: $20 Participants 16 years of age or older need an angling license. This program will introduce participants to the various techniques of ice fishing in the local backwaters. Hiking February 13 th 3:30-7:00 pm WHITTLING A SPOONATULA Minimum Age: 6 th Grade Fee: $10.00 Students will spend time at the ELC cabin learning safe whittling practices while carving soft and hard woods. Group 1 Group 2 Time Date: February 7 th February 14 th 9:00 am-3:00 pm January 14 th 3:00-6:00 pm 3:00-6:00 pm ADULT OPPORTUNITIES ADULT NORTH SHORE SPRING SKI AND ICE CLIMB Fee: $150 (Lutsen fee not included) YCMA KAYAK CLINIC Learn strokes and how to roll kayaks in the YMCA pool. Also, have some fun playing kayak polo! Open to the community-adults and youth. The first day will be Ice Climbing on Manitou River Gorge. The second day will be downhill skiing at Lutsen Mt. The third day will be XC Skiing at Two Harbors Municipal Golf Course. No other time of the year offers so many bright stars and deep sky wonders so close together. From Orion to the various planets, there is something for everyone to learn about, enjoy and wonder. We will use the ELC s Telescopes =to explore the night sky and we will also talk about the stories behind the various constellations. Plan to join us!
