4 How to become a teacher There are many routes to train to become a teacher. But all of them lead to a professional qualification in the age range you choose to teach. Early Years Teacher Status, known as EYTS, is a new qualification equivalent to QTS but for the 0 5 year age range. Qualified Teacher Status, known as QTS, is required to teach at Primary or Secondary level in a maintained school, or non-maintained special school in England. Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills, known as QTLS, is an ideal professional qualification to teach in the further education and postcompulsory education sector. Although there are no formal qualification requirements for FE teachers, QTLS has been recognised as equivalent to QTS and is highly regarded by employers. Your best path to gaining EYTS, QTS or QTLS and becoming a qualified teacher is dependent on the qualifications you currently hold. If you are studying A-levels, BTEC or similar subjects, you can gain your qualification through an undergraduate BA or BSc degree. If you already hold a relevant undergraduate degree, either from NTU or another institution you can take the postgraduate route with a School Direct Training Programme or PGCE. If you have extensive teaching experience, you can gain EYTS or QTS through an assessment of your practice. 5 How to become a teacher Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS) and Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) QTS is the accreditation which enables you to teach in statemaintained and special schools in England and Wales. Successful completion of an Initial Teacher Training course will lead to QTS. You then need to undertake a three-term induction as a newly qualified teacher (NQT) before you become a fully-fledged teacher. QTLS is the licence required to practise in the Lifelong Learning Sector and has recently been recognised as equivalent to QTS allowing holders to work in secondary schools. EYTS is a new accreditation aimed at raising the status of the early years workforce. It is ideal, although not compulsory, for teachers in nurseries, children s centres, independent schools, academies and pre-schools. Professional Skills Tests Everyone who applies for a teacher-training course has to pass the new Government Professional Skills Tests before the start of their teacher-training course. The tests are designed to show that you have the basic level of literacy and numeracy needed to teach to a national standard. You will not be tested on your knowledge of Maths and English in the National Curriculum or how to teach it. The tests gauge your ability to understand basic terms such as using fractions, reading a pie chart, spelling and punctuation. Go to the Department for Education s website at to find out more about the areas they cover, take practice tests and book your tests. Come to an open day 3

Professional Skills Tests: see page 3. DBS check: You will need to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service, and Prohibition Order checks. Course length: Four years, full-time. Campus: Clifton. Tell me more The aim of the course is to produce teachers who are confident, critical and creative professionals committed to the development of all through education. At the centre of our teaching is an understanding of young children, how they learn, and how they develop as learners with individual needs. Our students have a broad view of the taught curriculum and gain a wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding throughout the course, enabling them to meet children s individual needs within collaborative classrooms. Our newly qualified teachers are highly sought after by schools and ready to make a difference in education. What will I study? In Years One and Two you will focus on your professional development and learn more about how children learn in educational contexts. The broad base of these two years allows you to learn to teach all areas of the curriculum and to work in schools with children across the 3-11 age range. In Years Three and Four you opt to focus on teaching either the 3-7 age range or the 5-11 age range, although the award of QTS qualifies you to teach across the whole 3-11 age range. If you opt for the 3-7 strand, you will continue to study English, Mathematics and Science tailored to the specific needs of this age phase. Your studies will concentrate on the breadth and interrelated nature of the curriculum and will support you in teaching in Early Years settings or Key Stage 1 classrooms. If you opt for the 5-11 strand you will continue to study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. You will also opt to develop strengths in linked foundation areas. Currently these are art, design and technology, the humanities or PE and music. We believe you should have the skills to enable all children to learn effectively. So there is a theme of inclusion throughout the course, covering aspects such as behaviour, gender issues, special educational needs and English as an additional language. 14 How do I apply? More information on page 32.
17 BA (Hons) Primary Education Throughout the course your studies will focus on teaching and learning in Early Reading and Early Maths. You will also learn more about the wider aspects of education through themes such as sustainability, innovative practices in education and professionalism. Skills to support your employability are embedded throughout the course. In your final year we emphasise leadership skills through a module which can be studied at master s level. How will I learn? You will experience both university-based training and Primary professional practice. Although these two contexts are physically different, the learning and teaching strategies overlap and allow for an integration of theory and practice. Over the four years we expect you to move towards more independent learning, to set your own development targets and draw on others expertise to support you in meeting these targets. You will experience a whole range of teaching styles including lectures; seminar workshop sessions; peer teaching; independent and directed learning tasks; auditing and developing your own personal subject knowledge; individual and group tutorials; observed teaching experience; research projects; fieldwork and role play. The aims of the course can only be met through a comprehensive range of assessment methods that give you the opportunity to demonstrate your achievements. You will be assessed through group presentations, portfolios of evidence, written assignments and observations of your teaching. Fieldwork forms an important and challenging aspect of the course. In a residential setting, first year students work closely with tutors to investigate contexts and opportunities for learning in the outdoors. As a result of this experience students begin to develop relevant subject knowledge for teaching. Students find fieldwork a rewarding and enjoyable opportunity to develop their own learning, both personally and professionally. Will I go on placements? During each academic year you will spend blocks of time on placement in local schools. A focus on professional development in the lead up to placements will give you the support and confidence you need. Our close relationships with partnership schools enable you to gain a wide experience of teaching in many different school environments. We try to offer you experience in multi-ethnic city schools, suburban schools and schools in rural settings. Will I get a job? Graduates of this course are in demand as Newly Qualified Teachers. 19 School Direct (Primary) What will I study? The School Direct course is a flexible approach to teacher training. The majority of your time will be spent in the school, training in the classroom and supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will also spend time studying at the University. At the University you will study for the same academic award as other postgraduate teacher trainees: the one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Education (120 credit points at master s level), or, depending on the precise number of credits obtained at master s level, the one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. As your curriculum knowledge develops, you will be exposed initially to the pedagogy and requisite subject knowledge of the core subjects (Mathematics, English and Science). This is broadened to encompass the full range of curriculum subjects as the year progresses, building your understanding of curriculum purposes and progression. You will learn how to plan and resource your teaching in ways that engage and inspire young learners. How will I learn? The course is designed to be school-based and trainees spend 25 days in the University during the school year. You will be supported by your school, where a designated mentor oversees your everyday development, and you will receive regular visits from a University tutor who will work with school staff to develop you as a practitioner. You will be a registered student with NTU and your qualification will be an NTU award. This means that NTU has responsibility for the quality of your training and you will benefit from the combined expertise of the University and your training school. The exact form of the delivery of the year will depend on the school to which you apply. How do I find a school? We have excellent partnerships with a number of local schools who are providing the School Direct Training Programme. For a full list of the places available please see our website. You can apply for a place on the UCAS website. Schools that offer places are often part of multiple school alliances. An alliance will have a lead school which will be the one which appears on the UCAS portal; you may not necessarily be training in that school but in one of the schools that form the alliance. What about fees and funding? Trainees on the programme will pay tuition fees to NTU for the PGCE. Schools that provide the salaried programme may pay part or all of your fees on your behalf. As a School Direct trainee you will be entitled to the same financial support and bursaries as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses. Go to for further funding information. How do I apply? Applications must be made through the UCAS website. Please do not send applications to the School or University as they cannot be accepted. We will jointly select applicants for interview with the school. You will be interviewed at a school so that the selection panel can see how you engage and interact with primary age children. DBS check: You will need to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service, and Prohibition Order checks. Course length: One year, full-time. Campus: Clifton. 2. The School Direct Training Programme (salaried) This is an employment-based route into teaching for high quality graduates with three or more years full-time career experience. You will be employed as an unqualified teacher by the school who will pay you a salary. School Direct places are offered by a school or group of schools in partnership with NTU. The schools involved have an excellent history in teacher training and are experienced in supporting trainees to become confident, effective and successful teachers. What will I study? The School Direct course is a flexible approach to teacher-training. The majority of your time will be spent training in the classroom where you will be supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will also spend time studying at the University. Places are available across the country for the following secondary subjects: Tell me more This exciting new course enables you to work in a school and train in the classroom supported by qualified teachers and mentors. You will also spend time studying at the University as you progress towards gaining a PGCE or PGDE and Qualified Teacher Status. There are two training options: 1. The School Direct Training Programme This is open to all graduates. You will pay tuition fees and may be eligible for a bursary from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). Physics Mathematics Chemistry Modern Languages Art and Design Design and Technology Business Studies Economics Engineering English Dance Drama Geography History Computer Science Classics Music Biology Physical Education Psychology Religious Education 22 How do I apply? More information on page 32.
25 School Direct (Secondary) At the University you will study for the same award as other postgraduate teacher trainees: the one year Postgraduate Diploma in Education (120 credit points at master s level); the one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (60 credit points at master s level); or the Professional Certificate in Education. During the University-based, taught element of the programme, you will develop an understanding of your specialist subject in the context of the National Curriculum, the principles involved in the teaching and learning of the subject across the full age and ability range and the professional values and practice, subject knowledge and understanding commensurate with the particular subject specialism. This includes how pupils learn and how they develop cognitively, socially and physically and the understanding, skills and personal qualities necessary for managing the learning environment. How will I learn? The course is designed to be school-based and trainees spend 25 days in the University during the school year. You will be supported by your school, who oversees your everyday development. You will be a registered student with NTU and your qualification will be an NTU award. This means that NTU has responsibility for the quality of your training and you will benefit from the combined expertise of the University and lead placement school. Trainees on the programme will pay tuition fees to us for the PGCE. Schools that provide the salaried programme may pay part or all of your fees on your behalf. As a School Direct trainee you will be entitled to the same financial support and bursaries as trainees on other postgraduate teachertraining courses. Go to for more funding information. How do I apply? Applications must be made through the UCAS website. Please do not send applications to the school or University as they cannot be accepted. We will jointly select applicants for interview with the school. You will be interviewed at a school so that the selection panel can see how you engage and interact with pupils in a secondary school. How do I find out more? Find out more about teacher-training and our courses at or contact our Admissions Team on +44 (0) Questions? Just ask NTU 23
26 PGCE Secondary PGCE Secondary This highly practical course enables you to gain the skills, knowledge, understanding and experience needed to build on a degree and teach at secondary level. Fact file Application: Apply through the UCAS teacher training portal at: UCAS code: Business Education: N1X1, Design and Technology: W9X1, English: Q3X1, Engineering: HX1C, Computer Science with ICT: IX99: Mathematics: G1X1, Music: W3X1; Science: (Biology: C1X1; Chemistry: F1X1; Physics: F3X1) Entry requirements: A good UK honours degree or equivalent, at a minimum of 2.2, in a subject which you wish to specialise, plus GCSEs / O-levels or equivalent at grade C or above in English and Mathematics. Candidates are also encouraged to demonstrate awareness of current secondary practice, preferably through recent school experience. As soon as the completed forms are sent to us from UCAS, we invite selected candidates to attend for interview. Professional Skills Tests: See page 3. DBS check: You will need to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service, and Prohibition Order checks. Course length: One year, full-time. Campuses: Clifton and City. Tell me more This course will equip you to respond effectively to the issues currently affecting schools. We place a strong emphasis on developing your individual strengths and skills within the context of the contemporary education environment. The focus on practical teaching experience enables us to cultivate knowledge that will successfully drive your future career. The award of PGCE is offered at three levels: Professional Graduate Certificate in Education; Postgraduate Certificate in Education, where 60 Masters-level credits can be gained; and Postgraduate Diploma in Education, where 120 Masters-level credits can be gained. All of these are recognised teaching qualifications but the postgraduate award will allow fast-track entry onto a Masters course. Successful completion of the course leads to Qualified Teacher Status. What will I study? Trainees specialise in one of the following subjects: Business Education Computer Science with ICT Design and Technology Engineering English Mathematics Music Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) The course develops understanding of children s cognitive, social and physical development; the personal skills and qualities necessary for managing the learning environment; and the professional values and practice of teaching. Students who specialise in one of the sciences are also expected to teach two sciences up to GCSE. In addition, all trainees study the wider professional and education context. This develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a first teaching post in a secondary school, and provides a foundation for further professional development. 24 How do I apply? More information on page 32.
27 PGCE Secondary How will I learn? The majority of your time will be spent on placement in schools or colleges. This practical teaching is supported by University-based lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials exploring learning and teaching in your subject and in the wider context. Trainees also engage in an independent research project that draws together academic and professional practice. Students are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy during the application process. Will I have placements? School or college experience is central to the Secondary PGCE at NTU. At least 24 weeks are spent on placement in at least two secondary schools or colleges. For both placements, training is planned by mentors to enable students to attain QTS. This practical teaching element is assessed on a regular basis via formal observation by a subject mentor and University tutors, enabling us to monitor each individual trainee s progress and effectively support their development. We are in partnership with a wide range of schools so your placements may be in city centre, suburban or semi-rural locations. This variety provides opportunities for a wide range of teaching experiences and lays a good foundation for your future professional development. Will I get a job? The vocational nature of the PGCE Secondary and the fact that successful completion of the course leads to QTS means that graduates are ideally placed to pursue a career as a teacher in a secondary school or college. What about fees and funding? This course has the standard University PGCE fees. Visit to find out about the latest fees and student loans. Visit to find out about extra funding and scholarships opportunities for teacher-training courses. How do I apply? Apply directly through the UCAS teacher training website at: Institution code: N91 How do I find out more? Find out more about teacher-training and our courses at or contact our Admissions Team on +44 (0) Questions? Just ask NTU 25
