8 Postgraduate routes into TEACHING POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PGCE) The PGCE programme is an intensive university-based course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching. The PGCE Pathways at Canterbury Christ Church University have an almost unparalleled national and international reputation for their quality, their range and their degree of innovation. Developed and refined in partnership with our partner schools and colleges, they are built on a strong sense of shared values: transforming individuals and society; reflective and critical approach to learning; and inclusive set of principles on which education must be based, The quality of provision is built on mature and embedded partnership working with a wide range of primary and secondary schools in Kent, Medway, south London, Essex and East Sussex, and with nurseries and Further Education colleges in the region and in other parts of England and Europe. We aim to educate students for the future and we are seeking to build their capabilities for an uncertain world, in order to have the best possible impact on the life chances and achievements of the children and young people they educate. Fees and bursaries University tuition fees apply for all PGCE courses. For further details visit There are financial incentives for trainees dependent on entry degree grade and government priority subjects. Bursaries are available to eligible students who are studying applicable routes, will be seeking a teaching position in England, have not previously had a bursary (including EU and non-eu citizens) and are not employed as a teacher. How to apply To apply for full-time Primary, 7-14, or PGCE programmes you can submit your application from late October 2014 online via the UCAS Teacher Training website: INSTITUTION CODE: CANCC To apply for part-time Primary, Modular or Post Compulsory PGCE programmes you will need to apply directly to the University. 9 07 Delivery Unless specified, all full-time programmes are based at our Canterbury campus starting in September for a full academic year. All learning on the programme is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study is informed by and from practice. All PGCE pathways cover the following main areas: Professional Practice You will spend a minimum of 120 days in school during your PGCE, based in two or more contrasting schools or educational settings, and working under the expert guidance of school-based partnership tutors and mentors. This will support you to develop a wide range of teaching skills and the understanding and knowledge to enable you to meet and go beyond the requirements of The Teachers Standards. Professional Studies You will learn about broader aspects of education, its role in society and communities and how education policy and practice has an impact on schools and educational settings. Key principles and values in education will be explored as you develop your own theories of education and reflect critically on others. Curriculum Studies You will develop your understanding and knowledge of the relevant curriculum, pedagogy and resources to support the teaching of your chosen subject or age phase. As you progress through your studies and can apply your learning to practical teaching situations, you will be introduced to a wider range of critical perspectives on teaching and learning in your chosen subject(s). Enhanced Studies You will have the opportunity to choose a particular aspect of education and to study that in greater depth. This could include aspects of particular curriculum areas, aspects of learning which cross curriculum boundaries; the option you take could include an opportunity to undertake work experience in non-school settings, some of which could be outside the UK. Our extensive portfolio of PGCE options are detailed in this brochure. Please note: our offering is subject to Government allocations and an annual review of our provision. Faculty of EDUCATION

10 Postgraduate routes into TEACHING PGCE PRIMARY FULL-TIME ROUTE Lower Primary (3-7), Upper Primary (5-11) Upper Primary plus Languages: French German Spanish Upper Primary with Mathematics specialism The PGCE Primary aims to enable student teachers to become confident, competent classroom practitioners who can enable children to learn effectively across the whole curriculum. The programme also develops student teachers understanding of the demands of the National Curriculum, the Curriculum for the Foundation Stage and other Government initiatives. Two age phases are available for students to study, 3-7 or 5-11 year olds. In addition students can also opt to express an interest in Languages in the Upper Primary course. By doing so, students will follow the same Upper Primary (5-11) pathway but will have some additional opportunities to engage with Language learning and teaching, including a self-funded research opportunity in a French, Spanish or German Primary school setting. Students can also opt to follow the Upper primary 5 11 programme with mathematics specialism. This programme is designed to support you in reaching the Standards to be a Qualified Teacher, with a focus on primary mathematics. It is written for anyone who enjoys learning mathematics and wants to teach children to fully understand and be fascinated by it. The programme will enable you to be a generalist primary class teacher but will also prepare you to be a specialist teacher of primary mathematics, who leads mathematics across the school, teaching more mathematics than other subjects. You will study primary mathematics in depth, exploring the most effective ways of teaching mathematical ideas. You will also gain a strong understanding and experience of teaching other subjects. The Primary route works very closely with our partnership schools to provide a range of experiences. In our model for PGCE placement, a student is allocated to a partnership school for the full PGCE year and you may be allocated to one or two classes. This one longer placement is structured into individual days and two block placements in the Autumn and Summer terms. In addition students are required to undertake a contrasting school experience for a minimum of 15 days. This should take place in a different school setting and should provide a contrasting experience to your base school, including: size; urban or rural locations; infant or juniors; use of specific curriculum. PGCE 7-14 (KS2 and KS3) English Geography History Mathematics Modern Foreign Languages Physical Education Religious Education Science Music Design and Technology The PGCE 7-14 pathway is an innovative and unique pathway that enables students to be educated across two distinct sectors; primary and secondary. This experience and education enables the students to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of education from EYFS through to KS5. Students will engage with observation in EYFS, KS1 and KS5, are encouraged to engage in some teaching at KS4 but will teach predominantly in KS2 and 3. The underpinning rationale of the pathway is to engage with issues that occur from the year 6-7 transfer and develop through experiencing best practice in both settings. 08 If you have any questions education@canterbury.ac.uk

11 09 The pathway works with a group of primary, secondary and special schools in order to bring a dedicated partnership approach to all aspects of the pathway from planning to joint teaching and learning experiences. Whilst in secondary settings you will have a specialist subject you will be expected to teach across the National Curriculum in primary. The pathway offers a wide range of experiences such as a devoted week to SEN with 3 days in a special school. From this pathway student teachers can gain employment across primary and secondary settings and are highly sought after with several students gaining interesting roles working across both a primary and secondary school. PGCE Art and Design Biology Citizenship Chemistry Computer Science Design and Technology English Geography History Mathematics Modern Foreign Languages Music Physics Physics with Mathematics Physical Education Religious Education The age range offers a fantastic opportunity to work with creative, vibrant and dynamic young people with a focus on teaching the subject you are passionate about. You will learn to teach your subject across the age range whilst understanding how it fits within the wider curriculum. You should experience two contrasting secondary school placements which may include: Independent; Grammar; Foundation, Academy; and Secondary High Schools. On placement you will be supported by a Professional Mentor, Curriculum Mentor and University Tutor. You will develop a wide range of strategies to teach, support and develop learners from KS3 through to GCSE and A Level. Each specialism maximises your potential to become an imaginative and creative teacher who understands the wider importance of education in society. There are unique features to each subject specialism and to read more about each please visit: PGCE INSPIRE Physics Chemistry Mathematics Physics with Mathematics in partnership with Imperial College London The INSPIRE pathway aims to enhance science teaching in schools by bringing those with significant research experience in physics, chemistry or engineering into schools in and around London. It is open to those with at least an MSc in one of those subjects and attracts an enhanced bursary. Based at Imperial College London, the INSPIRE programme builds on tailored versions of the Curriculum Studies and Professional Studies modules with a dedicated Enhanced Studies module, which draws on expertise from Imperial College and Canterbury Christ Church. The skills and understanding developed underpin four weeks of INSPIRE activities delivered by our students in partner schools, in addition to the teaching and workshops run in two placement schools. This is a challenging but highly rewarding route into teaching for those dedicated to enhancing education in the physical sciences and mathematics. Faculty of EDUCATION

12 Postgraduate routes into TEACHING PGCE Applied Business Studies Health and Social Care Psychology Leisure and Tourism This highly innovative PGCE is a unique programme preparing graduates for the rewards and challenges of teaching the age range and beyond in the Secondary and Further Education (FE) sectors. The course is organised in partnership with schools and FE colleges and you should experience two contrasting placements. The programme is also designed to provide a strong foundation for working in the Lifelong Learning sector, especially FE, with the possibility of a further Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills status in this sector (subject to Professional Formation). Outcomes for students on this pathway are excellent with high employability rates. PGCE POST COMPULSORY FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME BASIS Business Administration Construction (and related subjects) Design and Technology Engineering English, Media Studies and Performing Arts Health, Social Care and Public Services ICT Mathematics Skills for Life (Literacy and ESOL) Skills for Life (Numeracy) Science PLEASE NOTE: The PGCE Post Compulsory accommodates all subject specialisms and the courses above are provided as an example of the range on offer. However an on offer of a place on the course is subject to CCCU securing a placement for you in your subject specialism area within one of our Partnership Colleges. The PGCE Post Compulsory is a highly-regarded professional teacher training course that will qualify you to teach in the lifelong learning sector. This sector offers you a breadth of potential employment routes including Further Education colleges, sixth form colleges, adult and community learning, work-based learning and prison education. The programme accommodates all subject specialisms and professional placements are obtained within our wide consortia of further education partner colleges in London and Kent. You will develop the essential skills required for teaching and learning, as well as honing your subject specific teaching skills. In addition, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the functional skills of English, maths and ICT and will be able to integrate these into your teaching. Credits from this pathway can be used towards the MA in Professional Learning and Education (Please see PGCE awards for credit breakdown). The programme has a high success rate of trainees obtaining employment within the sector post-qualification. From my job hunting experience, I felt that the PGCE from CCCU is considered an excellent qualification by employers. It has made a big difference for me. 16 Postgraduate routes into TEACHING TEACH FIRST Teach First is a charitable organisation based in London, whose vision is to recruit, train and place top graduates in National Challenge primary and secondary schools for two years, to address educational disadvantage through inspirational teaching and leadership. Selection for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme is very competitive and includes a rigorous assessment process aimed at identifying not only academic ability but the level of your commitment to teaching and to the Teach First vision. Typically, you are expected to begin the programme with at least a 2:1 degree in your teaching subject and are required to complete a Curriculum Knowledge Audit, which is assessed by University tutors. All prospective candidates apply to Teach First directly, and online, in the first instance. Delivery The programme starts with an intensive six-week Summer Institute, which focuses on the essentials of teaching theory and practice, including pedagogy and personalised learning. Canterbury Christ Church University is one of the training providers for participants based in schools within the London region, and is the training provider for the South East region. Training is provided by school-based mentors, supported by University tutors who visit the schools regularly and run specialist training days at various times in the year. Once you gain your teaching qualification, you will continue your placement in the second year and receive a structured programme of leadership training designed to prepare you for senior positions in education, politics or business. Masters level work is integrated into the training programme so after the two mandatory years of the Teach First programme, you are well on the way to completing an MA in Education Leadership. How to apply Applications for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme are made online directly to Teach First.
