They pointed to pupils participation in clubs having increased dramatically, citing specific figures of 40% participation rising to 70%. They also noted that spending in previous years had been used to improve the quality of physical education teaching in the school. -2-

3 INCOME Based on government figures of 169 children on roll from Years 1-6, this year s Sport Premium income was 8,845. EXPENDITURE PLAN Following the successful implementation of Sport Premium funding over the last 2 years, it was decided to continue to fund 5 key areas of PE: Improving the quality of teaching Resources and facilities PE leadership Competition costs After school club subsidies to widen available sporting opportunities Specific figures were not set for each area but within the plan, it was agreed that two key principles should underpin all expenditure: impact and sustainability EXPENDITURE FINAL AMOUNTS Spending has been slightly higher than income, although these figures include some invoices not received until the new academic year. It is noteworthy that club subsidies now account for nearly 50% of spending. Reasons why this is the case can be found in the club figures section later in this report. -3-

4 IMPACT: QUALITY OF TEACHING Following our recent PE curriculum restructuring, this year the focus on quality of teaching has been on widening the curriculum further, with the introduction of orienteering. 425 was spent in November, when a county advisor delivered CPD training to all teaching staff on orienteering, with a series of demonstrated activities designed for primary school children. This initially led to sessions in Year 5 and in Year 2 to road test these ideas. Following early successes, the practicalities were presented to the whole-school community during the February INSET day, including a practical task for all adults to try out for themselves. Sessions are now built into the curriculum for all year groups, with teachers leading differentiated activities, appropriate to their year groups. Overall standards of PE continue to rise with outstanding quality gymnastics and dance routines in evidence across the school and a higher level of success in external competitions. This is further evidence that previous input into the quality of teaching is having a positive long-term effect on the subject. IMPACT: RESOURCES AND FACILITIES We continue to be well resourced in many areas of PE. However, miscellaneous purchases have been required, ranging from disposables such as tennis balls to less frequent items such as new football goals and also more specialist equipment such as replacement collars for the high jump stands. IMPACT: PE LEADERSHIP Only 165 was spent on supply cover to release the PE Coordinator to attend just one of the termly Partnership PLT training days this year. 753 was spent on continued membership of the Chelmsford School Sports Partnership as this gives the school instant and free access to CPD courses for all staff, competition opportunities for children across all ages across a wide range of sports, and direct communication with the local SGO, based at Great Baddow High School. Membership of the Sports Partnership also allows us to send 2 Gifted and Talented children from Year 6 to Rising Stars and 2 children showing potential in PE to Little Stars. -4-

5 IMPACT: COMPETITION School Games Level 1 - Intra-school Intra-school competition, as required by the National Curriculum, has risen dramatically this year. Traditional competitions such as Skills Morning and Athletics Cup have continued and newer events such as Cross Country and lunchtime competitions (this year Rugby World Cup and Euro 2016) have also been repeated. This year also saw every child in the school take part in the Beehive Olympics, planned and delivered by Year 5, as part of their curriculum work. Overall participation figures are 43% higher than last year alone and a full 85% higher than pre-sport Premium. -5-

6 School Games Level 2 - Inter-school Inter-school competition (between schools), has also risen dramatically this year. We have entered competitions across 18 different sports this year and across all age groups. Alongside traditional primary school sports like football, netball and hockey, we have taken part in more Cross Country events this year (our Year 3 girls team won one of their events) and also participated in Orienteering and Teddy Lympics for the first time. The orienteering event was an excellent extension from the curriculum development in school, funded through Sport Premium to improve teaching and learning further. Greater levels of success have also been reached this year, with our teams qualifying from early rounds to reach the Chelmsford finals in Sportshall Athletics and Netball. Better still, we won the Chelmsford finals in Boccia and Quad Kids Athletics, meaning Beehive Lane represented the entire Chelmsford partnership in County Finals. For the second year running, we were also invited to send a hockey team to play in a competition held at the Olympic Park. These higher levels of achievement provide further evidence of increasing long-term standards in PE, as a result of spending in previous years to improve teaching and learning Overall participation figures topped 400 for the first time this year and are nearly 36% higher than last year alone and 119% higher than pre-sport Premium. -6-

7 With increased participation in competitions, comes higher costs for transport and LSA hours/supply costs to release teachers. Even with parents transporting their children to a number of events, transport costs have risen from 3.36% ( 299) in to 11.02% ( 1,014.50) in Staff costs have also risen from 4.25% ( ) in to 8.16% ( ) in These costs are necessary though to maximise the opportunities within competitive sport, a statutory part of the National Curriculum in PE. All levels of competition - Combined figures Overall, participation in competitive sport continues to increase year on year at Beehive Lane, with the total number of participations surpassing 1500 in the year has seen a 41% rise in participations in one year alone, and figures now stand nearly 94% higher than pre-sport Premium. -7-

8 IMPACT: AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS Club hours Club participation continues to rise dramatically, with a record high 4675 hours attended this year alone. That represents a 29% increase on last year and is nearly 4 times higher than pre-sport Premium levels. There have been more KS1 club hours this year than whole-school club hours in the last year pre-sport Premium and more KS2 club hours this year than whole-school club hours in the first year of Sport Premium funding. KS1 figures tend to be a little lower than KS2 because clubs are not usually offered to EYFS children in their first term while they are settling into school and many still find an extended day too long later in the year. However, average hours per child shows only a small difference (19.64 club hours across the year per KS1 child compared to hours per KS2 child). -8-

9 Children participating in PE clubs PE clubs now reach 80% of children across the school, with record high figures in both KS1 (71.38%) and KS2 (87.59%). The only noticeable difference in genders is in KS1, where a higher proportion of boys (80%) attended a club this year, compared to 63% of girls. Unlike some previous years, the Multiskills take-up this year has been more dominated by boys, but all KS1 clubs are open equally to boys and girls, as evidenced by some boys taking part in cheerleading and dance, and some girls in football. Any difference here is purely through choice, not through lack of opportunities. -9-

10 Children participating regularly in PE clubs Regular attendance (as defined by attending 75% or more of the sessions) has also reached new heights, with 75% of children across the school attending at least 1 club regularly during the year. 84 children (over 40% of the school) attend at least 3 clubs regularly (i.e. an average of one per term), with a significant number exceeding that (most notably 2 brothers who have regularly attended 12 and 10 PE clubs respectively!) Club subsidies have accounted for a significant proportion of this year s expenditure. This has risen from 27.4% ( 2,434) in to 37.6% ( 3,216) in to 48.4% ( 4,328.70) this year. This is due to the increased figures evidenced above

12 NEXT YEAR: At this stage, we intend to continue funding the same 5 areas of PE, although specific details within each of these have yet to be confirmed. Improving the quality of teaching Resources and facilities PE leadership Competition costs After school club subsidies to widen available sporting opportunities BEYOND NEXT YEAR: We already know that Sport Premium is guaranteed until summer 2020, but following the Budget in March 2016, the Government has announced that the proceeds of the new Sugar Tax will be used to double the overall Primary School PE & Sport Premium budget to 320m. This is expected to start in September Whether this means each school will simply receive double its current funding or whether a new calculation will be applied is not yet clear. Similarly, we do not know yet whether further conditions or restrictions will be attached to this increased funding. More information is expected during the course of next year, ahead of the change
