1 Yale/Coursera Roman Architecture II: Pompeii and the Bay of Naples: June 7-15, 2016 Dear Alumni of Yale Coursera Roman Architecture, Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, obliterating a cluster of Roman towns along the Bay of Naples. One of those was Pompeii. Rediscovered in the 18th century, Pompeii was first pillaged by treasure hunters and later scientifically excavated by archaeologists who revealed a battered but nearly complete Roman city. In an itinerary curated and guided by Professor Diana E. E. Kleiner, we will go back in time to experience what it was like to walk a stone street, shop at the local vegetable market, relax with friends at the public baths, attend a play at the theater, cheer a favorite gladiator at the amphitheater, and even to frequent a Roman brothel or lupanar. We will see where people lived and where their loved ones were buried. We will learn about Roman residential architecture by also exploring Herculaneum, where multistoried residences are preserved, and through a visit to the Roman villa at Oplontis with its interior decorated with spectacular Second and Third-Style Roman wall paintings. We will experience the Roman spa at Baia, the impressive amphitheater at Pozzuoli, and spend a full morning at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, where major finds from these various towns are now located. We will then visit Mount Vesuvius and enjoy an unforgettable dinner together on the mountain. Visits to excavations and museums will be combined with other delicious Italian meals in serene settings, ample leisure time, and a full day on the sybaritic Island of Capri, a popular resort already in Roman times. We will ascend a hill to discover the Villa of Tiberius, an expansive imperial; residence. Although now in ruins, the surviving foundations, and spectacular views contribute to our understanding of why Tiberius preferred to rule Rome from his island. A farewell dinner in Pompeii will conclude the journey. For those who would like to add an extension to this trip, there is an option to travel with Professor Kleiner for two more days to explore Paestum, a Greek city on the Tyrrhenian Coast, renowned for its trio of Greek temples, and to sail to the stunning Island of Ischia. The latter will provide a day to relax at sea, visit the historic Castello Aragonese, and enjoy time at leisure at the lively harbor of Ischia Porto. We hope you will join us!

2 Day-by-day Itinerary Day 1: Tuesday, June 7 Depart from USA, fly overnight to Naples. Day 2: Wednesday, June 8 (D) Arrive in Naples. Around noon, transfer to the Hotel Forum Pompeii, only steps away from the excavations ( As a first orientation, take a scheduled walk through modern Pompeii. Attend a welcome reception in the evening, followed by dinner in Pompeii. Day 3: Thursday, June 9 (B, L) - Pompeii Visit the civic center of Pompeii. Explore the main Forum with its Capitolium, Basilica, Macellum (Market), Temple of Apollo, and the Eumachia Building, which provides evidence for the important contributions women made to their hometown. Visit the Temple of Isis to get a glimpse of how foreign religions were practiced in Pompeii and explore Pompeii s great amphitheater, the oldest surviving example of its kind and the model for the Yale Bowl. Break for lunch at 12 in the excavation site cafeteria, and return at 1.30pm to view the Stabian and Forum Baths with their sequence of rooms, including the influential frigidarium. Stroll the wellpreserved streets of the city, noting the drains, stepping stones, and corner fountains. Visit Pompeii s lupanar, an ancient brothel. The evening is at leisure. Day 4: Friday, June 10 (B, L, D) Pompeii Explore a selection of Pompeii s most interesting private houses. These may include: House of the Faun, House of the Vettii, House of the Ceii, House of the Silver Wedding, House of Menander,, House of the Labyrinth, House of the Surgeon, House of the Ancient Hunt, House of the Golden Cupids, House of C. Paquius Proculus, House of D. Octavius Quartio, House of Sallust, Villa of the Mysteries, House of the Iliac Shrine,.and House of the Bear. After a lunch break in the site s cafeteria, enter the necropolis at the Nocera Gate and stroll along one of Pompeii s most fascinating tomb streets, featuring the bench tomb of Eumachia.. We will then visit one of the buildings that are currently being restored and learn from the historians and technicians who work there what they do to preserve and restore Pompeii s private residences. Free time between 5pm and 8pm allows you to linger longer at the site or get some rest before we reassemble for a group dinner. Day 5: Saturday, June 11 (B, L) - Herculaneum Depart by bus for Herculaneum, a nearby town with remains that expand our knowledge of Roman domestic architecture between the earthquake of 62 and the eruption of Vesuvius in 79. While only about a quarter of the city has been excavated, recent work has been under the expert guidance of the Herculaneum Conservation Project. Unlike at Pompeii, we will also see that materials like wood have been preserved at Herculaneum and that some of the latest houses have made rhe dining room the most important room in the house. After lunch, the bus will take us to Oplontis to see a wellpreserved villa, which some scholars think was, at one time, the residence of Nero s wife Poppaea. As of September 30, 2015 page 2

3 In this villa, we will also experience the transition from Second to Third Style Roman wall painting. Back in Pompeii, the evening is free. Day 6: Sunday, June 12 (B, L, D) - National Archaeological Museum, Naples; Mount Vesuvius Leave for Naples by bus at 9am, and spend the morning in the National Archaeological Museum. View models of Pompeii, as well as paintings and mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum, including the celebrated Alexander Mosaic and the spectacular collection of bronze statues and portraits from the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, the model for the Getty Villa at Malibu, CA. After lunch, drive to Mount Vesuvius for a site visit followed by a wine tasting at 5pm, and a rustic dinner on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Day 7: Monday, June 13 (B, D) - Capri At 9am, depart by bus for Sorrento, where we will board a ferry for the Island of Capri. Ascend the funicular to experience the island by wandering its picturesque streets and enjoying window shopping at its elegant boutiques. Find a relaxing lunch spot at your leisure. From 2pm, for those who want to join the walk up the steep hill, visit the Villa of Tiberius and enjoy the spectacular panoramic views. At five, we transfer back to Sorrento by ferry boat and enjoy dinner there at 7, with a return after to our Pompeii hotel. Day 8: Tuesday, June 14 (B, L, D) - Pozzuoli, Baia At 9am, leave by bus for Pozzuoli to visit its excavations including the forum, temples, baths, and one of Italy s most impressive amphitheaters, with its subterranean corridors nearly fully intact. Have lunch at noon in the Phlegrean Fields area, and at 2pm, make the short drive to Baia. Visit the Roman version of an Augustan spa, complete with domed thermal rooms made of concrete that prefigure (in smaller scale) Rome s Pantheon. Also, visit the museum before returning to Pompeii at five. Enjoy a farewell dinner in Pompeii at 8pm. Day 9: Wednesday, June 15 (B) Departures In the morning, the bus leaves the hotel for the airport Extension: Magna Graecia and the Island of Ischia Join Professor Kleiner on a two-day extension to Magna Grecia and Ischia. Magna Graecia, or Greater Greece is the region in the Bay of Naples that was home to Greek settlers from as early as the 8 th century B.C. and where ancient Greek culture left a lasting imprint. Ischia is the twin island to Capri. Although less well known, many consider it more beautiful. As of September 30, 2015 page 3

4 Day 9: Wednesday, June 15 (B, L) From Greece to Rome: Paestum and Velia Depart at 8am for Paestum to see the earliest settlement. Ancient temples, sanctuaries, and other public buildings in styles from Greek to Roman: The Roman public buildings on view include an amphitheater and private houses. After lunch, visit the Paestum Museum and the harbor and Velia. Dinner at leisure. Day 10: Thursday, June 16 (B, D) Ischia In the morning, depart for Naples and sail to Ischia by boat. Visit the Castello Aragonese and then enjoy at your leisure the joie de vivre of the island s lively harbor, Ischia Porto. Return to Pompeii and gather for the final 'farewell dinner.' Day 11: Friday, June 17 (B) Departures In the morning, the bus leaves the hotel for the airport. As of September 30, 2015 page 4

5 Program rates and Payment Schedule Program rates for this tour are $4950 per person based on double occupancy, single supplement $800. These rates include: Accommodation (seven nights in four-star Hotel Forum Pompeii), meals (daily breakfast, five lunches with wine and coffee, five dinners with wine and coffee) as indicated in the itinerary, entrance fees and guided tours, transportation by motor coach within designated itinerary, bottled water on excursions, services of a Via Antiqua trip manager throughout the journey, gratuities for guides, drivers, and porters, quiet vox audio system. The program rate does not include: airfare, passport and visa fees, medical expenses and immunizations, trip cancellation/interruption and baggage insurance, meals not specified in the itinerary, dishes and beverages not part of the included meals, personal items. A deposit of $1000 per person, payable to the Association of Yale Alumni, of which $250 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, payable to Via Antiqua Travel GmbH by check or electronic wire transfer, must be received 120 days (February 8, 2016) prior to departure. Health Participants must be in good health and will be expected to be able to walk for relatively substantial distances, up and down hills and stairs possibly without handrails, and on uneven pavement, to stand for prolonged periods of time at sites and museums. Insurance Travel insurance for trip cancellation and interruption, medical problems, baggage loss and delay, etc. is strongly recommended. Please be sure to carry the details of your travel insurance coverage with you on the trip. Yale provides limited medical evacuation insurance from Frontier Medex for each traveler. Changes in Itinerary and Cost All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of the brochure preparation and are subject to change without notice. Of course we do our best to provide the tour arrangements as confirmed, but Via Antiqua Travel GmbH and the Association of Yale Alumni must retain the right to make modifications to the itinerary, if unforeseen circumstances beyond our control should arise. Cancellation Policy All cancellations must be made in writing to the Association of Yale Alumni, and are subject to a $250 non-refundable administration fee. Cancellation from 120 days to 76 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of the deposit. Cancellation from 75 days to 31 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of 50% of the entire trip cost per person. Cancellation from 30 days up to the time of departure will result in 100% of the entire trip cost per person. No refunds for any unused parts of the tour program will be given. If the program is cancelled in advance of departure by Via Antiqua Travel GmbH or the Association of Yale Alumni, a full refund will be given without further obligation on our part. Neither Via Antiqua Travel GmbH nor the Association of Yale Alumni accept liability for any airline cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket in conjunction with this program. If the trip is affected by circumstances resulting from force majeure, Via Antiqua Travel GmbH as well as the participants may withdraw from the contract any time. The cost of transportation home will be shared equally by Via Antiqua Travel GmbH and the participant. Via Antiqua Travel GmbH reserves the right at any time to remove from the group (either from the entire trip or from certain activities) a participant who exhibits behavior that creates an unpleasant environment for other group members or trip organizers, or who cannot for any reason keep up with the rest of the group. Liability Via Antiqua Travel GmbH nor Yale Educational Travel will not be held liable for financial damages, property damages, bodily injury, dismemberment, or death that are not a direct result of intent or negligence on the part of Via Antiqua Travel GmbH or through intent, negligence or fault of an independent supplier. In the event that Via Antiqua Travel GmbH is held liable, the maximum amount of the award will not exceed three times the cost of the trip. Via Antiqua Travel GmbH and the Association of Yale Alumni assume no liability for any damages resulting from force majeure. Passports All travelers are expected to have a current passport with a date of expiry no sooner than six months from the return date, and any required visas. Baggage and Personal Effects Baggage and personal effects remain the travelers responsibility and risk at all times. Authority to Use Images Occasionally Via Antiqua Travel GmbH or Yale Educational Travel obtains photographic or video images of passengers and trip activities. By participating in this travel program, you authorize Via Antiqua Travel GmbH or Yale Educational Travel, without providing compensation or obtaining additional approvals from you, to include photographic and video recordings including voice recordings of you in our sales, marketing, advertising, and publicity activities.
