Operating Environment Matti Sirén Natural Resources Institute Finland Oscar Contractor Forestry Seminar Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

Contractors are key players in wood procurement Contractors today are small forest departments of forest companies Major part of traditional tasks of forest companies are now carried out by contracting companies forest companies are concentrating on purchasing the wood This kind of development sets large demands for both companies and contractors New tools in logistic planning like WoodForce create possibilities to all players in procurement chain they are also needed in silvicultural operations, where we will see the same kind of mechanization as in cuttings in 1980s For the effective use of new possibilities and tasks we need large contractors and co-operation between contractors A good example: Karelwood, 4 large contractors operate together in North-Karelia giving services in harvesting, road construction and silvicultural operations, turnover 8.6 mill., personnel ~ Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

Development sets contractors in new and strategic position Earlier the contractor was a machine man start with forwarder, then harvester and forwarder, now several companies have more than 30 machines Contracting is more business oriented Good management skills are a must; new tools give possibilties to follow the productivity and use of machine fleet Contractor is the link between forest owner and the forest company this is not an easy role Acceptability of operations has an important role for forest owner and for public opinion Acceptabily can mean good harvesting trace, right management Contractors must try to meet these challenges in changing climate conditions and keep the expensive seasonal variation of operations as small as possible 3 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

Demanding operating environment has directed research and development Fragmented forest ownership is a huge challenge for forest operations and logistics small size of harvesting sites More than 40 % of wood comes from thinnings ¼ of growing stock is on peatlands. Peatland forests mainly in thinning stage Main income for forest owner comes from timber logs > need for optimal measuring and bucking need for new pricing systems? All the previous reasons have directed our forestry research machines developed for demanding conditions also have their market abroad Forestry operations must follow the Forest Act; a renewed Act in 2014 The quality of operation are followed by Finnish Forest Center, Forest companies and contractors Methods for quality measuring and self-monitoring have been developed together 4 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

On site level two key questions: when and how? For efficient and year round use of machinery we need: good demand for different sortiments willingness of forest owners to sell more dynamic terrain trafficability models than today Much effort to produce a dynamic trafficability model reacting on weather conditions Machine operator has large influence on productivity and silvicultural quality operator tutoring has huge potential Forest machines collect very much data connected with position utilization and storing of this Big data -mass opens exciting visions New tools for planning and operator tutoring available very similar development paths in Finland and Sweden 5 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

New tools for trafficability estimation and operator tutoring 6 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén Source: Räsänen et al. 2013/Metsäteho

Operator tutoring has large potential - f.ex. LoggingMap: site slopes, bearing capacity and stand structure can be visualised to operator Slide: Sami Lamminen 7 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

We can also show the stand density (BA) before and goal after harvesting BA before thinning Guidance for BA after thinning Photo: Väätäinen et al Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

Tutoring for efficient forwarding has high potential (In Sweden STIG, BesT WAY, in Finland Väätäinen et al. 2013) Photo: Väätäinen Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén Photo: Friberg 2014

An interesting testing laboratory. Selection cuttings of uneven-aged forest Natural Resources Oscar Contractor Institute Sem./ Finland Sirén Photo: Erkki Oksanen/FFRI

How we meet the targets of forest owner Near future: Harvester generates tree-map 5 Trees on half circle with 11 m radius represent following BA sum of these gives density, m 2 /ha Photo: Argone Ltd A poor man s model for operator tutoring in selection cuttings 2 12 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén

Intelligent forest machine Opertor assistant systems Tutoring and feedback on work cycles Economic driving Driver drowsiness Cooperative systems Sensing of trees, soil Obstacle, power line, hiker warning Location based systems Tree map generation Machine to machine communication (location of timber, soil trafficability) Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén Slide: Antti Asikainen

Modelling data & Input data Models predicting forest structure and dynamics Information for localization and updating of models Silviculture Roundwood trade Wood procurement Measurements & observations Guidelines and tutoring Forest management planning Wood procurement planning Comparisons of forest management practices on standlevel Operative ICT tools for forest management and wood procurement 14 Oscar Contractor Sem./ Sirén Slide: Jarmo Hämäläinen/Metsäteho Decision support Input data and definitions: goals, constraints, management practices, assortment rules, prices, costs, etc. Forest company Decision-making and planning Forest policymake r Forest owner Harvesting or silviculture entrepreneur Councelling organization
