If you are not receiving El Semanal via please notify to be added to the distribution list. If you do not have Internet access please contact the office at Important information will still be backpacked. Student Directory: An HoLa Student Directory will be distributed to each family this month. Please visit by Oct. 5th to specify the exact information you would like listed. For privacy, distribution is only to the HoLa community. Back to School Night: We hope you will be able to join the HoLa faculty for Back to School Night on Oct. 3rd, 7-8:45pm. The purpose of the evening is to familiarize you with HoLa s faculty and instructional program. Please see attached flyer for the evening s schedule. Due to time restraints, it will not be possible for parents to meet individually with teachers. If you would like to make an appointment with your child s teacher, contact the main office at Spirit Week and Hispanic Heritage Month: Last spring the students of HoLa nominated Coco the Toucan to be our school mascot. Coco is helping encourage children with the Positive Behavior System (PBS) and will be a part of the 1 st Annual HoLa Spirit Week, Oct. 1 st -5 th. For each day next week, students will be asked to dress up in a special outfit to show their school spirit. Please see the attached flyer for details. Spirit Week will also coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month, which the teachers will incorporate into the curriculum (more details attached). Read for the Record: A group of Pearson volunteers will visit HoLa to read Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad to all classes and coordinate a variety of crafts and activities. Students are invited to dress in their favorite bug attire wings, capes, antennas and tutus welcome! Read for the Record is the same day as Spirit Week s Dress Like a Friend/Class Color day we look forward to seeing the outfits HoLa s students come up with! Oct. 4 th. See flyer for details. Dia de los Muertos Block Party VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Our kindergarten families have been hard at work planning HoLa's Dia De Los Muertos block party, to be held Oct. 6th, 11am- 4pm. It will be a very fun event, with crafts, games, food, bouncy houses and a beer garden. In order to make this event a big success for the whole community, we need volunteers to help with setup, games/crafts, food and clean up. Extra! Extra! Help Launch HoLa's School Newspaper! Any students in Grades 3 & 4 who are interested in joining the Editorial Board of HoLa's school newspaper are welcome to attend an information session with HoLa parent and writer, Melissa Romo on Thurs., Oct. 11 th, 2:50pm, in the teacher s lounge. The Editorial Board will be comprised of an Editor-in-Chief, two Assistant Editors, Production Manager and Advertising Manager. Five students will be chosen at random from those who attend the information session. The Editorial Board will meet every other week, from Oct. 15 th to Nov. 30 th, to prepare the first issue. Parent Workshops: Please join Director Elizabeth Willaum for a series of workshops on topics related to immersion education, as well as the NJASK. The first workshop, The Impact of Language Immersion on Brain Development, will be held on Thurs., Oct. 18 th, 7pm. All parents are welcome! Next up will be an NJASK workshop for 3 rd & 4 th Grade parents only (date TBD). Dine Indeed: Dine Indeed is happy to report that Anthony David s and D's Soul Full Cafe will be participating in October, with future proceeds going to several charities, including The Boys and Girls Club. Breast Cancer Fundraiser: 1 st Grade teacher Bertha Alfaro is raising money for breast cancer awareness through the Avon Foundation. All proceeds will fund research, as well as support programs that provide access to quality care for patients. To support her efforts, please go to: Mile Square Theatre: Thank you to MST for hosting all of HoLa s students for a preview of Go, Dog. Go! The kids had a great time! 4 BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT We hope you will be able to join the HoLa Faculty for Back to School Night on Wednesday, October 3, The purpose of the evening is to familiarize you with HoLa Hoboken Dual Language Charter School s faculty and instructional program. A night in which you can hear from your son s/daughter s Teacher Team. Due to time limitations, it will not be possible for the team to talk with individual parents about individual students. If you would like to make an appointment with your child s teacher and/or Teacher Team during his/her planning period, call the main office at Schedule for the Evening We will meet in the gym PROMPTLY AT 7:00 PM. The following is our agenda: Welcome/Bienvenida Sra. Elizabeth Willaum, Interim Director Faculty Introductions HoLa Faculty Sneak Preview of November s Parent Workshop Brain Research & 2 nd Language Acquisition and Development (5 minutes) or Why You Made a Great Decision When You Chose HoLa for Your Child!!! 7:20 PM Parents visit Classrooms All Grade Levels will visit the B classrooms where they will be greeted by the Grade Level Teacher Team (two 30-minute sessions have been scheduled, to accommodate parents with children in two grade levels). 7:25 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. - Art, Music and Physical Education Teachers will be in the Gym to discuss their curriculum and answer any questions parents may have regarding curriculum in their classes. Evening ends PROMPTLY AT 8:45 PM During your class visits, the Teacher Teams will provide you with the HoLa Handbook, the daily schedule, the 9-10 month curriculum webs and the overarching content-based lessons used as pacing guides.
