Executive Coaching Programme - Tavistock Consulting Trust Certificate 18th & 19th May 2016
Course Type On site Course Length 18 months Study Attendance Part - time Fee 7,500 Course Overview If you are looking to develop your coaching career or improve your effectiveness as an internal coach to colleagues inside your organisation, you may want to consider Tavistock Consulting's Executive Coaching programme. Accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council to senior practitioner level, the course is rooted in a systems psychodynamic approach to organisations and is practice based. Participants undertake ninety hours of coaching and receive intensive supervision, both one to one with an experienced supervisor in small coaching syndicates on the course and in the supervision groups, which follow every two day block. We will be hosting course specific open evenings 6.30pm pm at Tavistock Consulting on: Thursday 21st January Wednesday 9th March Come along to meet the course tutors and to find out more about how this course can contribute to your education and professional development. To attend, complete a registration form by clicking on your preferred date above. Who is this course for? The course is suitable for practising coaches who want to work at a deeper level with clients; organisational consultants who wish to develop their one to one skills; and clinicians, managers and leaders wanting to add executive coaching to their portfolio.
Course outline The Executive Coaching course uses different learning techniques to develop your in depth coaching skills including: skills practice, experiential exercises, facilitated role-play, theory presentations, supervised coaching practice, coaching syndicate groups, video analysis and reflective plenary sessions. Participants submit reflections on their experience following each two day block. They receive detailed feedback on these from staff, in order to further develop their reflective capacity. Participants develop their own coaching practice under group and individual supervision. They keep a reflective log of their coaching development and learning from the programme. The five modules cover the following: Defining the task of coaching and its boundaries Understanding and developing oneself as an effective coach Practising in depth coaching skills Developing the coaching relationship with clients The impact of coaching on the client s organisation Linking coaching to the wider business and professional environment Professional development and ethical practice Why study with us? We use a systems psychodynamic approach to coaching. This method of executive coaching helps to uncover what s really going on for clients, rather than just what is presented. It allows coaches to work at depth and using emotional data to tackle the hard to reach issues that sometimes limit the performance of leaders, teams and organisations. Graduates of the Executive Coaching programme can expect to become significantly more confident to work at a deeper level with coaching clients. This enables the client and their system to understand root causes and change in a way that can be sustained, and results in better relationships, clearer goals and effective action. Assessment Assessment takes the form of seven short (1,000-1,500 words) and one long (3,000 words) case study, which are assessed by course staff and verified by an external examiner.
Attendance The taught components take place two days a month every two months, followed by two one-day attendance. See below for dates. In addition there are six two-hour coaching supervision groups, usually following each two day block. Each participant receives eight individual hours of supervision in addition to this, from a Tavistock Consulting supervisor (who is not a course tutor, but is an experienced systems psychodynamic coach). Course dates Module 1-18th & 19th May 2016 Introduction to the Systems Psychodynamic Model, Skills Development: Beginning Phase of Coaching Module 2-6th & 7th July 2016 Skills Development: The Middle Phase of Coaching, Engaging the Organisation Supervision group: 8th July 2016* Module 3-19th & 20th October 2016 Skills Development: The End Phase of Coaching, Reviewing; re-contracting and endings Supervision group: 21st October 2016* Module 4-5th & 6th December 2016 Practising Advanced Skills, Coaching Practice using Video Feedback Supervision group: 7th December 2016* Module 5 o Part I - 20th February 2017 Skills Laboratory: Further Work with a Systems-Psychodynamic model Supervision group: 21st February 2017* o Part II - 10th July 2017 Professional practice and the wider Coaching Context Supervision group: 11th July 2017* * Supervision groups run from 10am-12pm on the above dates. A sixth supervision group, usually between modules 4 and 5, will be arranged after the programme starts.
Academic award On successful completion of the programme graduates will receive a Tavistock Consulting Certificate in Executive Coaching. This course has been accredited at Senior Practitioner Level by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). Entry requirements There are no academic qualifications required for entry into the course, and participants come from many professional backgrounds. Participants share a desire to work at a deeper one-to-one level with clients in organisations, in order to help improve working relationships and personal effectiveness. Some participants have already completed the Tavistock Masters (D10) in Consulting and Leading in Organisations: Psychodynamic and Systemic Approaches, where the practice emphasis is on working with teams. Others go on to study the D10 Masters programme at a later date. Some participants have trained as clinicians (eg psychotherapists), or have a coaching qualification from a different institution. Others have been managers/ leaders and are seeking to develop one-to-one skills, having been inspired to coach by their experience of working in organisations as employees. Decisions about suitability are based on a one-to-one interview with a member of the course faculty. Fees 7,500 A 20% discount is available for current Tavistock staff and students, recent alumni of Tavistock courses (five years) and current Tavistock Consulting Associates. Start date 18th & 19th May 2016 Closing date for applications 4th April 2016
What students say "When I decided to qualify as an executive coach, I immediately knew that I wanted to train at Tavistock Consulting. Over the years in my role as an HR Director I had got to know more about their approach having received executive coaching myself and having commissioned a piece of consultancy work from Tavistock Consulting. What differentiates them is a focus on what lies beneath the surface - what is really driving feelings and behaviours in organisations. The training programme is robust and strikes the perfect balance between theory and practice. I now feel very well equipped to progress my career as a coach." Head of HR & Executive Coach (2014/15) "When the executive coaching course pops into mind, a smile comes to my mind. I love it: I think the group works well and is forming a nice cohesive and empathic whole. The slowbut-deep teaching style and the complementary approaches of the two teachers works well for me. I like the balance of theory and experience, a cycle of thinking- reflectingdoing-reflecting and I like it too because, so far at least, even when I m in the hot-seat, I ve felt safe. This is not an easy environment to create, but when it is created, it really fosters learning and higher levels of motivation. Director of Management Consultancy practice (2013/14) Looking back, I do think this is an excellent programme and for me, absolutely essential to bring to fruition my previous learnings. The Executive Coaching programme has really enabled me to integrate what I previously learned at the Tavistock into my practice. I would recommend it strongly to anyone who wants to apply systemic psychodynamic thinking to coaching and consultancy. Emeritus Professor of Management University College Cork, Ireland (2012/13) Partners The external examiner for the course is Erik de Haan (Director at Centre for Coaching at Ashridge Business School). The external examiner marks a final portfolio of student work. On Module 2 he also provides an overview of other schools of coaching to participants. Other study locations This course and qualification can be commissioned as a bespoke course to take place inside a client organisation/ HR department.
Course leaders Megan Meredith is the faculty Director, having taught on the Executive Coaching programme for several years. Megan is an independent executive coach and consultant working with clients across the sectors using a systems psychodynamic approach, with a particular focus on supporting clients to lead complex change. She was Principal Consultant and Commercial Sector Lead at Tavistock Consulting and Director of the Organisational Development Programme at Roffey Park Institute. She is a tutor on the Tavistock Clinic s Masters (D10) programme in Consulting and Leading in Organisations: Psychodynamic and Systemic Approaches. Bev Thomas is an organisational consultant and executive coach. She is Principal Consultant and Health Sector lead at Tavistock Consulting and draws on systems and analytic thinking to inform her work. With a background in Clinical Psychology, she has expertise in the assessment and diagnostic process, and uses this skill to inform her work and understand the narrative of organisational problems. As an ACAS accredited expert in mediation, Bev has a keen interest in the cause and effect of conflict in the workplace and its implications on individual staff and the wider organisation.
