1 Section 9. Trigonometric Functions of any Angle So far we have only really looked at trigonometric functions of acute (less than 90º) angles. We would like to be able to find the trigonometric functions of any angle. To do this follow these steps:. Draw the angle in standard position on the coordinate axes. Draw a reference triangle and find the reference angle. Label the reference triangle. Write down the answer OR use your calculator. Note: Your calculator will only give you decimal approximations but on the test your answers must be exact. What is a reference triangle and reference angle? If you draw the angle in the standard postion its reference angle is the acute angle formed by the terminal side of and the horizontal axis. The reference triangle is the triangle which is formed by drawing a perpendicular line from the terminal side of your angle in standard position to the horizontal axis. Ex: Here is a reference angle and triangle in the nd quadrant. The size of the reference angle in the second quadrant will be 80 or depending on whether the angle is given in degrees or radians respectively.
2 Here is one in the th quadrant: The size of the reference angle in the fourth quadrant will be 60 or depending on whether the angle is given in degrees or radians respectively. Ex : Find the reference triangles and angles: a) 09º The reference angle will be º 09º º
3 7 b) The reference angle will be c) This angle is larger than one full revolution so to find it in standard position we need to find a coterminal angle that is smaller than (One time around the circle). To do this we simply subtract untill our angle is less than So to find the reference angle we will start with the coterminal angle and subtract to get:
4 Now we will use these reference angles to find the values of some trigonometric functions. Ex. Find the values of the six trigonometric functions for 0º. Draw the angle in standard position. Draw the reference triangle and angle. Label the triangle. Here we will label using the standard triangle NOTE: Since one side of the reference triangle is on the negative x-axis that side is labeled as. This is VERY IMPORTANT. You will notice that this makes the cosine, secant, tangent and cotangent negative.. Now we can find the 6 trigonometric functions by reading them off the reference triangle: sin( 0) hyp hyp csc( 0) cos( 0) hyp sec( 0) hyp tan( 0) cot( 0)

You will notice that this makes the sine, cosecant, tangent and cotangent negative.. Now we can find the 6 trigonometric functions by reading them off the reference triangle: sin( ) hyp csc( ) hyp cos( ) hyp hyp sec( ) tan( ) cot( 0)
6 Ex : Suppose cos and in quadrant III. Find the values of the six trigonometric functions for. The first thing we need to do is to draw a reference triangle. We know we are in quadrant III and we know that cos so we know two sides of the triangle already. We will use the Pythagorean theorem to find the last side. Here is the reference angle. - -y- Solve for y: ( ) + y so y. NOTE: Since one side of the reference triangle is in the negative y direction and the other is in the negative x direction that both of those sides are negative. This is VERY IMPORTANT. You will notice that this makes the sine, cosecant, cosine and secant negative. Now we can find the 6 trigonometric functions by reading them off the reference triangle: sin( ) hyp csc( ) sin( ) cos( ) hyp sec( ) cos( ) tan( ) cot( ) tan( )
7 What this has shown us is that we can determine the sign of the trigonometric functions by which quadrant the terminal side in. Quadrant II sin(): + cos(): - tan(): - Quadrant I sin(): + cos(): + tan(): + Quadrant III sin(): - cos(): - tan(): + Quadrant IV sin(): - cos(): + tan(): - Ex : Suppose csc and cot > 0. Find the values of the six trigonometric functions for Since the csc the sine is positive so is in quadrant I or II. sin Since the cot > 0 then the tangent is positive so is in quadrants I or III. The overlap of these two regions is quadrant I so we can draw our triangle: hyp csc x To solve for x we use the Pythagorean theorem: ( ) + x so x. sin( ) csc( ) hyp sin( ) cos( ) hyp sec( ) cos( ) tan( ) cot( ) tan( )
