ISBN Required M aterials to Com plete Labs: All taping and w rapping m aterials are supplied to you fo r this course. During th e firs t w eek o f class, you m ay pick up th e supplies necessary to com plete th e taping and w rapping skills in th e m ain HHP office. If you are unable to pick them up, please contact th e instructor. You m ay need to purchase additional tape, depending upon how m uch you practice taping. Co-Requisite: You m ust be enrolled in AHAT210 to take this course (unless approved by instructor) Course Description: This course is designed to supplement AHAT 210 fo r you to apply basic theories and techniques used in th e m anagem ent o f injuries th a t typ ically occur in th e a thle tic population. This course w ill provide guidelines and recom m endations fo r preventing injuries, recognizing injuries, and learning how to co rrectly manage a specific injury. This course includes a va riety o f topics related in one w ay or a nother to th e overall health care o f an athlete. The firs t part o f th e course focuses on organizing and establishing an effective health care system. The second p o rtio n o f th e course emphasizes techniques in preventing or m inim izing sp ort-re la te d injuries including specific taping and w rapping techniques, and th e th ird p o rtio n focuses on m anagem ent o f spinal cord injuries.
3 W h a t I expect of you: 1.) Please ask questions! Think critically, digest th e in fo rm a tio n, and feel free to ask any questions th a t you may have about th e m aterial. 2.) Read th e book! I O ther than th e obvious reason th a t you w ill be tested over it, it is im p o rta n t fo r you to keep up w ith th e reading and to practice skills to tru ly gain understanding o f course m aterial. 3.) W o rk hard and be resourceful. This class is equivalent to a sem ester-long, undergraduate course fo r th e study o f prevention and care o f a thle tic injuries. It is im p o rta n t th a t you stay on to p o f assignments. These th re e weeks are going to m ove fast and th e re w ill be no late assignm ents accepted. It is a lo t fo r me to grade, and late assignm ents w ill p ut us all behind, so NO EXCEPTIONS! 4.) Check th e course co nte nt, announcem ents, discussion boards and tu to ria ls regularly. Expected Student Learning Outcomes: Learning Outcomes l.g a in an understanding o f th e role and fu n ctio n o f a sports m edicine team m em ber in a com prehensive health care system 2. To be able to id e n tify inju ry prevention strategies fo r a th le tic injuries 3. Be able to id e n tify em ergency m edical situations, apply a ppro priate firs t aid measures, and make necessary referral to a pp ro priate m edical professionals Module Learning units 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Learning units 3, 4, 5, 6 Learning units 3, 4, 5, 6 4.Utilize know ledge o f m usculoskeletal injuries to p erform proper taping and w rapping techniques 5. Be able to id e n tify com m on injuries o f th e low e r and upper e xtre m ity and d ete rm ine a ppro priate acute care m anagem ent including referral to app ro priate medical professionals Learning u n it 3 Learning units 3, 4, 5, 6 Evaluation of Student O utcom es: Lab Assignments (20%): A va riety o f assignm ents are used to help students reinforce key concepts w ith in th e labs. Assignm ents m ay include worksheets, critiques o f video, o r review activities. Taping and Wrapping Videos (50%) Students w ill be asked to subm it videos p erform in g th e skills learned in this course. Videos may be created using flip cameras, digital cameras using video settings, phones, o r video camera. All videos m ust be su bm itted e ith e r in an mpeg or wmv file. Practical Exam (30%): Students w ill com plete a com prehensive practical exam dem onstrating application o f specific taping and w rapping techniques. During th e last w eek o f th e labora tory course, th e in stru cto r w ill post a list o f tasks to com plete th a t m ust be su bm itted in video fo rm a t. The list w ill be a random selection o f taping and w rapping skills th a t you w ill learn in this course. Grading Scale: % = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D <60% = F The in stru cto r reserves th e rig ht to award + or - grade w here deem ed appropriate. Course Policies and O ther Inform ation: 1. Assignm ents- assignm ent due dates are listed in th e course o utline. All assignm ents are to be com pleted by m id nig ht o f th e due date (M o unta in Standard Time). 2. Please name yo u r files w ith yo ur last name and an abbreviated nam e o f th e assignm ent (rich _w ord search l). You m ay use an underscore (_) or a period (.) to separate yo u r name fro m th e nam e o f th e assignm ent. Do n ot use o th e r sym bols (such as * &, etc) in yo ur file names as I w o n 't be able to open them. 3. Student Conduct Code- All students m ust practice academic honesty. Academ ic m isconduct is subject to an academ ic penalty by th e course in stru cto r a n d /o r a disciplinary sanction by th e U niversity. Credits and W orklo ad Expectations This is a sem ester-long, undergraduate course fo r th e study o f prevention o f a th le tic injuries packed into a th re e-w eek course. It w ill be fast paced and necessary th a t you stay on to p o f things and do n o t fall behind. Course Schedule (Topics.
