2 2 SCIENCE SETU Workshop on DNA FINGERPRINTING 0900 hr, 22 January2016 Hindu College Auditorium, University of Delhi WORKSHOP We are delighted to announce that a Workshop on DNA Fingerprinting is being held under the auspices of Science Setu at 0900 hr on Friday, 22 January 2016.The Workshop is being jointly organized by seven colleges 1 on the North Campus of University of Delhi in collaboration with the National Institute of Immunology (NII). The venue for the workshop will be the auditorium of Hindu College. The tentative programme is enclosed asannexure 1. The workshop is being organized in the background of the large-scale applications of DNA fingerprinting technologies in criminology, food &agriculture, medicine & health, veterinary science, conservation and classification of biodiversity. The Human DNA Profiling Bill, 2015, proposed to be introduced to the Indian Parliament has generated a heated discussion. Under the Bill, the government proposesto make DNA profiles of criminals and suspects across the country in a bid to bring down crime. Dr. J. Gowrishankar, Former Director, Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad, and the architect of the Bill has kindly agreed to be the Theme Speaker for the workshop. There will also be a lively panel discussion on various aspects of DNA fingerprinting by experts and stakeholders. SATELLITE PROGRAMMES WITH THE WORKSHOP Under the auspices of Science Setu, it is aimed to have year-round programs in colleges. 3 3 The competitions are open to partner colleges 2 under Science Setu. The details of the competitions are given below. Essay Competition for Students on Stem Cells A workshop on Stem Cell Science and Applications: Hype and Realitywas organized under the aegis of Science Setu on 22 September 2015 at Zakir Husain Delhi College. In order to encourage the recall of the subject by students, it is proposed to hold an Intercollegiate Essay Competition on the above topic. The competition will be organized at two levels: first at the college level and the next at NII level. Each college will select the three best essays for award and forward the same to NII. The essays received by NII will be independently evaluated by a committee and prizes will be awarded to the best three entries at the Workshop on 22 January The competition is open to all the 13 Science Setu partner colleges (see Footnote 2). The colleges are requested to conduct an essay writing competition on the topic Stem Cell Science and Applications: Hype and Reality ahead of the forthcoming Workshop. In order to ensure uniformity, a general set of guidelines for the competition has been drawn up by a committee comprising Dr Komal Kamra, SGTB Khalsa College; Dr K. Nirmala, Daulat Ram College; and Dr Anita Kamra Verma, Kirori Mal College. The Guidelines are appended at Annexure 2. Poster Competition for Students on DNA Fingerprinting A Poster Competition on DNA Fingerprinting will be organized by each partner college prior to the January, 2016 Workshop. This will help the students to put in efforts to study the subject prior to participating in the Workshop and enhance their levels of understanding. The best three entries from each college will be displayed at the Venue of the Workshop (Hindu College). The three best entries out of these will be awarded at the Workshop on 22 January In order to ensure uniformity, a general set of guidelines for the competition has been drawn up by a committee comprising Dr Neha Kapoor, Hindu College; Dr Neelam Gandhi, Hans Raj College; Dr Rekha Kumari, Miranda House: and Dr Charu Dogra Rawat, Ramjas College. 6 6 FOR STUDENTS GUIDELINES FOR SCIENCE SETU ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION Annexure 2 Title of the essay: Stem Cell Science and Applications: Hype and Reality. Language: English Authorship: There shall be only one author per essay. Font: MS Word, Times New Roman font. Length: It should be written in English and should not exceed 750 words (text only). Illustration: Two or three well-labelled, appropriately-captioned illustrations (line diagrams, half tone photographs, graphs) may be incorporated. Be well aware of downloading directly from the web! This is strictly prohibited. Layout: i. Cover Page: The essay should begin with a cover page on which only the title of the essay, the name of the author, course and college of the author should be given. No other detail should be included on this page. Example: Heading (Times New Roman; 14; Bold; centre aligned) Name (Times New Roman; 11; centre aligned) Course (Times New Roman; 11; centre aligned) Name of College (Times New Roman; 11; centre aligned) ii. Second Page: The actual essay (along with the title) should begin on Page 2. Heading or title of the essay (Font size 14, bold) should be given. However, the name and course of the student should not be given on this page. Line spacing: 1.5 Margins: 3 cm margins on left and right Alignment: left aligned Length: should not exceed 750 words Submission: The essay in MS word file and pdf shall be submitted to the mail id of the Science Setu Nodal Person of your college no later than 4 January 2015 midnight. Hard copies are not required. Mails received beyond this date and time shall be deemed ineligible for the next level. The Nodal person of your college will send you a mail received acknowledgment. Please preserve this mail. FOR SCIENCE SETU NODAL PERSONS Please add your name and id to this announcement under the heading Submission above, so as to receive the entries for the competition at your college. Have the essays judged by competent experts. You may like to announce prizes for the best three entries at your college s discretion. Please forward the best three essays as judged at the college level by in MS Word file as well as pdf to Dr.Varunendra Singh Rawat (vsrawat@hindu.du.ac.in) no later than midnight. You

He will also forward the essays to Dr S Natesh, Consultant Advisor, NII (natesh.dbt@gmail.com) on FOR JUDGES AT COLLEGE/ NII Judging should include marks for the following: Content (originality, coverage, referencing) Presentation Adherence to the guidelines above (negative marking will be done for essays exceeding 750 words) FOR JUDGES AT NII Judges shall receive the entries in which the first page has been removed and a code number written on the upper right hand corner of page 2. No names or affiliations of competitors shall reach the judges. GENERAL Each partner college may award prizes to the essays selected at its own discretion. The three best essays selected at the inter-college level will receive cash prizes as follows: 1st Prize: Rs 3,500, 2nd Prize: Rs 2,500 and 3rd Prize: Rs 1,500. These will be awarded on at the Workshop. All the competitors will receive a Certificate of participation.

8 8 Annexure 3 FOR STUDENTS GUIDELINES FOR SCIENCE SETU POSTER COMPETITION a) Theme: The general theme of the poster presentation is 'DNA Fingerprinting'. However, students can choose from any of the following four sub-themes: DNA Fingerprinting in Criminology DNA Fingerprinting in Agriculture & Food Processing DNA Fingerprinting in Paternity testing DNA Fingerprinting in Evolution, Classification and conservation b) At the College Level: Each college shall decide the date of the poster competition at its own college. The posters will be judged at the college level and the best three will be nominated for display at Hindu College. c) Venue for display: Hindu College, University of Delhi, Delhi d) Schedule of Display: 21January 2016, Thursday, 1400 hr-1500 hr: Selected posters should be displayed for judging. Judging will take place on the same date between 1500 hr and 1630 hr. Authors are expected to be present at the time of judging to respond to queries/ clarifications 22 January 2016, Friday, 09:00hr 1000 hr: Posters open to display. Authors are expected to be present to respond to queries/ clarifications of delegates. 22 January 2016, Friday, 1330 hr-1430 hr; Posters open to display. Authors are expected to be present to respond to queries/ clarifications of delegates. 22 nd January, 2016, Friday, 1430 hr: Posters can be removed e) Poster Boards: Each entry will be provided one board 30 width (75 cm) and 40 high (100 cm). Each board will be numbered on the upper left corner. Be sure you place your presentation on the board with the serial number allotted to you. Please bring your own supplies, including pushpins or velcro to mount your poster. f) Authors: Each poster may have more than one, but limited to three authors. The poster, however, will be treated as a single entry. g) Title Banner: The title banner should include the author(s) and affiliation(s). One logo per institution may appear in the title. h) Content: Presentation should be simple and direct. Use short phrases and bulleted text throughout the poster. As far as possible, avoid long narrative paragraphs. i) Organization of Content: The contentmay be organized to include the following elements: Introduction
