The sixth generation ST950 controller builds on the success of its predecessors, bringing a host of new features and new levels of accessibility and safety. Integral UTMC OTU, 4-stream MOVA 7, easy to follow web style user interfaces and safer operation are just some of the ST950 highlights and an optional uninterruptable power supply (UPS) is also now available. The new controller family is fully compatible with the whole range of Siemens street-furniture, including Helios CLS LED traffic signals, LED nearside signals and LED wait indicators, which all offer significant power and cost savings compared with conventional incandescent solutions. According to Head of Product Management, Keith Manston, the new ST950 family offers customers familiarity and many exciting new features typically available from the development of a new product from Siemens. To simplify user interaction with the controller, the ST950 provides an extensive web browser interface which is accessible either locally or remotely. Offering a consistent look and feel with the free standing Gemini UTMC OTU, this interface is able to be accessed locally via a USB port on the controller, remotely via Ethernet or using simple plug-in Wi-Fi interface module, he said. Many hardware components are common with ST900 allowing cost effective upgrades from ST900 to ST950. With ELV, the ST950 offers increased electrical safety for members of the public in the event of damage to the signal installation and personnel working on or around the intersection. Reduced power and cabling costs, and highly reliable lamp monitoring of very low power LED traffic and pedestrian signals, makes the ST950 the new benchmark for intersection control. InView recently achieved another major milestone and is now being used to actively manage over 100,000 individual assets. Trials are also underway of the Elexon management module of InView, bringing accuracy and efficiency improvements for the authority when producing their monthly reports. InView is designed specifically for the traffic market, allowing traffic managers to keep a record of traffic monitoring and control equipment and to track the status of that equipment, including maintenance issues, running costs and equipment reliability. Hosted on the internet and using a web browser interface, InView provides fault reporting and asset management in one package, and provides users with guaranteed data security, no ongoing hardware maintenance charges and reduced communications costs. david.pregon@siemens.com Cloud migration According to a new survey more than half of major councils have adopted cloud computing over the last five years with more than a third using cloud software to reduce costs or improve engagement with residents. Published by web developers Eduserv, the poll of 139 unitary authorities revealed 57.5% have taken up cloud computing which entrusts remote services with a user s data, software and computation. 5 Heart of Slough selects WiMag New traffic intersections across seven key sites in and around Slough have been equipped with over 150 wireless magnetometer sensors. The new Siemens WiMag equipment will help improve the management of traffic using the A4 and travelling to and from the town centre as part of the Heart of Slough improvement project. Slough Borough Council has selected Siemens WiMag as the primary detection technology as part of its strategic Heart of Slough regeneration programme. With a total of 162 WiMag sensors, the system detects traffic at seven new intersections on the A4, Wellington Street, through the centre of town, with access to and from the High Street and Slough s iconic new bus station. According to Engineer Chris Green representing Slough Borough Council s Network Management, the new wireless traffic detection system from Siemens has enabled the council to implement the most cost effective solution for the new sites on the network. Completed within 12 months, the major road network improvements in the Heart of Slough included removing the Brunel roundabout and creating a new four-way junction controlled by traffic signals to improve traffic flow and installing new improved road level pedestrian crossings. Led by Slough Borough Council and part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the project also included upgrades to the existing road and public transport infrastructure to ease journeys, improve safety and create an attractive gateway to the Heart of Slough. As a result, traffic congestion in the town centre has reduced to below modelled levels for the scheme and bus priority has been included without delaying other road users. 8 SafeZone goes live The first-ever UK installations of SafeZone, Siemens innovative and award-winning average speed enforcement system, have been commissioned in Bedford Borough and Dorset. In the parish of Milton Ernest, a road safety campaign led by the Mayor of Bedford Borough Council, Dave Hodgson, has resulted in the installation of SafeZone. As one of the first sites in the country to fully deploy SafeZone for enforcement purposes, the speed of vehicles travelling along the A6 and Radwell Road in Milton Ernest will be monitored with evidential records of any vehicles exceeding the assigned speed limit sent to Bedfordshire Police. With plans to extend the use of average speed cameras to a number of sites across the borough, Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: This is only the first step in tackling a serious problem. Using this technology, we are working with Bedfordshire Police to introduce a new enforcement system which will ensure that speed enforcement is more transparent and accountable, with residents able to see where speeding is being enforced and how many people are caught. Residents rightly expect that all speed limits in their neighbourhood will be enforced and that we should never have to wait until an accident occurs before action is taken. Meanwhile at the site of the original 6-month trial in 2011, SafeZone is up and running outside Springdale First School in Poole, Dorset. With the full support of the local community including the school, parents, local residents, Borough of Poole, Dorset County Council and Dorset Road Safe, three SafeZone cameras are deployed on Springdale Road for enforcement purposes. During the trial, which was not enforced, the number of speeding vehicles on Springdale Road reduced from 64 to as low as 16 (at speeds above 40mph in each hour before and after school). Ruth Leach, Headteacher, Springdale First School, said: We are delighted with this development as it will contribute towards providing a safer environment for the children, parents and staff as they travel to and from school, and it will benefit local residents. 9 Environmental Solutions Cities account for over 80% of CO2 emissions worldwide. Particulate matter, a major air pollutant from vehicle emissions, leads to an estimated 348,000 premature deaths annually in Europe. Society s growing and justifiable concerns about noise and pollution through high emission vehicles and traffic congestion need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. National governments as well as cities and towns can be given heavy financial penalties by the European Court of Justice if they are not seen to improve air quality. Newly developed in collaboration with the international information technology services company, Atos, GreenZone is a modular, scalable, innovative and highly secure Low Emission Zone solution. GreenZone is already helping to address city air quality problems and proving to be significantly more cost effective than any currently installed system. Using best in class Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to capture vehicle movements, GreenZone interrogates vehicle databases to effectively and efficiently monitor and control the passage of highly polluting vehicles through designated geographic areas. According to Andy Gill, Business Development Manager, GreenZone requires no customer-hosted IT infrastructure and uses visually unobtrusive roadside equipment. The solution combines proven enforcement systems, monitoring technology and communications which includes Siemens Sicore ANPR cameras coupled with advanced data processing and back-office technology which is hosted on a cloud for the first time, he said. Furthermore, an intuitive user interface that makes use of user configurable dash boards gives Transportation and City Managers full visibility of the status of pollution levels and performance of their Low Emission Zone. Since 2008, proven traffic monitoring equipment from Siemens has being used by Transport for London (TfL) as part of the London-wide Low Emission Zone (LEZ), the first of its kind in the UK and the largest in the world to discourage the use of the most polluting lorries, coaches and buses to improve air quality and health across the capital. andy.gill@siemens.com 9

In credit card format, the newly launched smartcard can be used intermodally for different means of transport and interoperably for different transport companies and fare networks as well as the associated service providers. Its dual functionality also enables the smartcard to be used for Check-in/Check-out (CiCo) access control systems and the Be-in/Be-out (BiBo) principle. Introducing IMP Siemens Integrated Mobility Platform (IMP) is a powerful information and transactional gateway that connects distinct providers of passenger transport. It greatly simplifies door-to-door multi-modal transport planning and provision for travellers and network operators alike by providing real time information on the transportation network. 11 Charging ahead Agreement has been reached with Electric Corby to install Siemens charging points for electric vehicles at the first of 10 locations in Corby, with a further 8 locations being finalised. With the support of Corby Borough Council, the latest Siemens EV charging equipment will be installed over the coming weeks. The new network of Siemens EV charging points will help Corby strengthen its position as a leading location for cleantech business investment. Furthermore, the installation of the Siemens equipment will bolster the wider Plugged in Midlands programme and strengthen the growing national network of chargers in support of the emerging market for electric vehicles. Siemens charging solutions are designed, built and installed for long term deployment and high levels of usage making them the sensible and sustainable long-term technology choice. The compact CP500A AC charging point, can charge two vehicles at the same time, reducing installation and maintenance costs and maximising deployment options.
