Smart Cities A sustainly Trend Briefing May 2015
Introduction Ever since the birth of the first great cities people have been drawn to urban living. In the 21st Century that movement has accelerated - the UN estimates that two thirds of the world s six billion plus population will live in cities by 2050 with close to 90 percent of the increase coming from Asia and Africa. This rush to urban living poses major sustainability challenges. Cities, with such concentrated populations, put a huge strain on natural resources like fresh water supplies. Their civic and business infrastructure requires massive amounts of electricity and, given the way so many are currently planned, their private and public forms of transportation emit enormous CO2 emissions. Throw into the mix the proximity of so many major cities to the coast and it s no surprise that climate change-related flooding is estimated to cost the world s 136 largest coastal cities US$52 billion per year by At the same time, urban living offers many opportunities for society to craft a more sustainable way of living and working. The fact that millions of people live close together allows new opportunities for clean mass transportation, for example. At the same time the application of technology - notably the combination of mobile and Internet of Things - to enhance digital connectivity means that the really smart cities can create an experience for their citizens that saves energy and reduces the stress of traditional urban living. In this latest Sustainly Trend Briefing we ve chosen 10 of our case studies that demonstrate how major companies are working to create Smart City services and experiences and how these innovations can deliver more sustainable living and business.
Volvo: Sensus Connect The Sensus Connect is one of the most advanced realisations of a smart connected car to date. It links up Volvo vehicles to its cloud systems, which then enables it to connect to the Internet and use apps to help drivers find and do things while they are driving. This collaboration, using Volvo s vehicles and Ericsson s software and infrastructure, could revolutionize how urban traffic problems are solved. For instance, you ll be able to find available parking spaces through your car s connectivity to parking sensors. You ll also be able to remotely allow friends, colleagues and family access to your car - enabling all kinds of new car sharing and pooling possibilities.
Cisco: Connected Meeting Spaces Smart Connected Meeting Spaces is an innovative new take on workplace management from Cisco. It uses a building s Wi-Fi system to give employees remote connectivity to accessing work spaces. The system reimagines office space - taking it from a fixed and segregated space to a fluid and interactive one, allowing employees easier access to, and greater control of, the meeting spaces they use. For example, employees can choose to have informal meetings in open spaces designed for collaborative discussion, or instead they can quickly search which conference rooms are available for more formal presentations and discussions. Cisco has now implemented Smart Connected Meeting Spaces in most of its offices worldwide, giving their employees a more interactive and collaborative working experience.
BT: My Travel Dashboard The My Travel Dashboard app, a conceptual product developed by BT with Cambridge University, DARTT and Aimes Grid Services, aims to help you effectively plan your public transport journey and, using real time information, be pre-warned of your estimated time of arrival. That means no more opting for the car over bus or train just because you re worried about being late for work. One highlight of the My Travel Dashboard app is how it visualizes the time lapse within your journey. It does so by giving a visual measurement of your estimated journey time, which allows you to choose the optimum time for you to leave the house.
Cisco: Smart Garbage Disposal Consider two street cleaning managers. One lives in Barcelona. The other lives in some other large metropolis. Both are responsible for making sure their city's rubbish bins are emptied. But, while the one manager works tirelessly to check which of the bins needs emptying, the one in Barcelona can focus on other daily tasks. Thanks to a new Internet of Things initiative from Cisco, they already know which bins need emptying and when. The city of Barcelona, in collaboration with Cisco, has enabled one of the most complete realisations of a smart city by establishing a citywide Wi-Fi system and connecting it with hundreds of sensors and monitors that relay all kinds of information relevant for urban management including real time feeds about parking, public transport, lighting and environmental control. The deployment of sensor and monitoring systems on a citywide level will significantly reduce excess waste - whether material, time or energy.
IBM: Big School Analytics IBM s data modelling program for schools is a tool that provides teachers with an improved scope of their students capabilities, allowing them to provide a more tailored education that tackles a pupil s learning difficulties. For years, Chattanooga s high schools had struggled to deliver a high quality education to their students. Only about 70% of students were graduating high school, with one school in particular achieving a graduation rate of just 24%. Enter IBM. By compiling and analyzing layers of student data, IBM and the Hamilton Education Department were able to offer more personalized and targeted education to the pupils. This resulted in a 10% increase in high school graduation rates across the county.
Philips: LumiMotion LumiMotion is a smart lighting system from Philips that uses sensors to determine optimum lighting levels for the amount of street activity. By only using energy when the light is required, LumiMotion provides the required safety and accessibility that citizens expect, without the need to continue wasting energy when no one is around. The lights also have variable settings and so dim when less light is required (for instance at dusk), or brighten when more is needed (late at night) - further saving more energy. In the words of Philip's marketing department it's "light that respects the night".
Siemens: The Crystal The Crystal is a London exhibition into sustainable cities, technology and buildings - representing a huge investment both in terms of finance and resources. The Crystal looks to convey a message to consumers on what we as a society have already achieved, and what can further be achieved. By integrating energy and cost-reducing measures into the infrastructure of the exhibition, such as large windows to reduce the need for lighting, The Crystal sets a benchmark for new-build sustainability. The Crystal also acts as Siemens showcase for sustainable cities. It features interactive exhibits, films, and animations to explore city trends, urban planning, smart buildings, safety and security, energy, water, healthy life, environment, and mobility.
Smart Cities - A Sustainly Trend Briefing GE: WattStation Emissions from private vehicles are a large contributor to global cities smog problem. Electric cars could change all that, but finding places to recharge an EV remains a serious obstacle to developing clean private transport. GE s WattStation is a parking meter-style station that charges electric vehicles while they are parked on the street and is accessed via a mobile phone app and a PayPal account. Featuring a slick and ergonomical design the WattStation aims to make owning and using an electric car a more practical and usable mode of transport for the public.
Nokia: Modern Mayor How do you communicate effectively to a younger generation on sustainability? Gaming, of course. Nokia s Modern Mayor is a smartphone and tablet app that allows the player to take over a ravaged and heavily polluted city, and transform it into a green and vibrant metropolis through considerate, environmentally-friendly decisions. By letting the player take control of real life, everyday sustainability issues that plague our cities, Nokia s app engages the consumer in sustainability without having to preach the green creed. Encountering issues such as planning, waste and energy management in a creative format stimulate ideas and engagement in an entirely new format.
Hitachi: Smart EV Power Distribution Our capability to produce renewable energy has increased exponentially over the last decade - our new problem is where to store it. Integrated into the Yokohama Smart City Project, Hitachi s Smart EV storage program looks to use car batteries not just as cleaner methods of transport, but also as a storage space for renewable energy. By being able to discharge the car s power into other appliances, such as your own home, the car battery would enable the microtransportation of renewable energy. The main benefit of this experiment is the vehicle s capability to store renewable energy that is produced by remote units, such as an isolated wind turbine, that have a very limited space for storing energy.
