Minimum achievement rating of 3, 40%-49% or better in four recognised subjects. Background in Artwork A portfolio of artwork is not required. However, all applicants must be able to apply basic drawing skills.

2 Page2 General Information The Diploma is provisionally registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework as: Higher Certificate in Design, Film and TV Make-Up Duration: 1 Year NQF Level: 5 Exit Level Credits: 125 SAQA Qualification ID No.: Purpose / Programme Description The Higher Certificate in Design, Film and TV Make-Up develops and refines artistic and technical design skills to potential employees. The Make-Up artist is a highly skilled and creative individual who can only be satisfied once they have transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary. During their studies students will not only learn how to apply make-up but also which techniques are available, the history of make-up and the effect it has today, the various approaches to different industries such as theatre and television. The students will be able to do commercial make-up for events as well as create an impact through special effects SUBJECTS: YEAR 1 Subject 1: The role of make-up (NQF Level 5) Students will learn the role of make-up in society as well as the different types of make-up. This will equip students with the basic understanding of what make-up is, the difference it makes in society as well as the various uses for make-up other than commercial sales. Subject 2: Make-up in various types of fashion, TV and cinematography (NQF Level 5) The student builds up knowledge on how to apply make up for commercials, advertising, editorial make-up, fashion shoots or magazine covers. The student will also learn the value of make-up in the entertainment industry and the various effects it can have creating an illusion for the public. Subject 3: Make-up techniques(nqf Level 5) Considering various techniques of make-up application and how to apply the make-up to create a smooth polished and neat finish. The student will also learn the effect various techniques have on the final result as well as the various effects one can create by combining techniques. As time is money is important that the employee must be able to work under specific time scales. Subject 4: Make-up as a career (NQF Level 5) Learning about professional standards, hygienic conditions and how to address various situations within the working environment. The make-up artists needs to be equipped with the necessary knowledge regarding how to work with clients, the procedures to follow with client consultations and how to communicate with clients in a professional manner. Skin management and preparation is vital to a successful application, students will be taught how to analyze and prepare skin in order to get a smooth and healthy surface to work on. The students will also focus on the principals of colour and how to work with it effectively.

3 Page3 Subject 5: Professional Practice (NQF Level 5) Introduces the student to the different career opportunities available to make-up artists. It will also give them a solid foundation with regards to business ethics, teaching them about professional conduct, customer relations and personal presentation. Motivation, time management and conflict management will also be dealt with. Subject 4: Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship (NQF Level 5) This subject aims to introduce the learner to the different ways that a make-up artist can use to promote her business to new and existing clients. The business can either be new or established or just want to attract new clientele. Due to the fact that different groups e.g. men and women have different needs, advice will be given on how to promote the various products in the make-up industry and how to plan and deliver a stunning sales presentation. A business plan will help with the set and research of starting your own business according to the information provided. Subject 5: Working in theatre(nqf Level 5) Due to the major aspect of lighting the student will learn the importance of lighting and how to apply make-up to achieve various effects. The student will also learn how to incorporate the various dramatic elements of theatre into the make-up. Working in theatre can be a very rushed industry as there are only short periods of time to do wardrobe changes. The student will learn how to handle these rushed moments and also how to plan the make-up theme per character to ensure minimal make-up changes in between scenes. Subject 6: Special Effects and prosthetics (NQF Level 5) Students will learn to work with the various materials in order to create special effects such as cuts, wounds, bruises, prosthetic hands and bold caps. These all play a large role in character transformation and have become an important part of the film industry. Subject 7: Face and body painting (NQF Level 5) Students will learn how to apply body and face painting. The students will be required to consider the various curves of the body and the body movement when creating the design for a specific display. Subject 8: Character make-up and facial hair (NQF Level 5) A large part of the movie industry consists of character creation. The students will learn how to transform someone into a completely different character by applying false hair, creating beards using false hair as well as creating an aged look or making someone look more or less overweight than hey are. Subject 9: Historical hair and make-up (NQF Level 5) Taking a walk down memory lane and looking at different eras like the 1920, 1980, 1960 and modern. Students will learn the style of make-up from each era and how to create the same effect today. The history of make-up will also give the student insight into how make-up application has changed, why it has changed and the effect it has on the make-up industry today. The final date for hostel registration is 15 September You will be required to pay a non- refundable hostel registration fee of R by 15 September 2013, and a refundable breakage deposit of R on/before 1 January Senior students will receive preference in choosing their preferred room before rooms are allocated to new students. Single and shared rooms are available. Shared rooms accommodate no more than 2 students. No food will be supplied as kitchens are equipped for self-catering. Communal areas in each student house are equipped with microwave, kettle, toasters, etc. The ablution facilities are equipped with showers, basins and toilets for each residence. 5 Page5 BURSARIES AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE A separate bursary application form is available from the Marketing Office / By filling in this form doesn t automatically mean that the student will receive a bursary. Only applicants whom applied and paid their application fee and acceptance deposit on/before 15 November 2013 will be taken into consideration. Terms and conditions as per bursary application form / policy applies. Prestige Academy endeavors to assist students with bursaries solely from its annual business profits. This bursary amount and conditions differ from year to year. The bursary policy can be viewed at the marketing office. The scope of bursaries offered by this institution address specific challenges that parents and students in higher education are facing today, but is also motivated by humanitarian and academic reasons such as rewarding excellent academic performance. As a private training provider, Prestige Academy (Pty) Ltd does not receive any government funding by way of annual subsidies such as is the case at public higher education institutions (universities). To make bursary provisions, the Directors allocate in its annual budget, the amount of R for this purpose. The amount for bursaries is fixed every year. Once the available funds have been exhausted, no additional funds will be available until the next academic year. The directors may cancel or decrease the allocated bursary funds depending on the finances of the business at a given time. Any applicant that does not adhere to the 80% class attendance will forfeit a bursary. Students may ONLY use bursaries for credit to the tuition fees. Bursaries are awarded in two categories, namely Academic, and Disadvantaged. STUDENT BANK LOANS Applicants who want to make use of a student loan at a financial institution are required to obtain a PRE-APPROVAL from the bank. In the event of a student loan not being granted, the account payer and co-account payer (spouse) must still provide the academy with all the documentation required on the registrationcontract. The academy will then determine whether the account payer will be able to settle the debt on a monthly basis without a student bank loan. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Experiential learning (also called internship or professional practicum) happens in your final year of study. It involves learning through placement at a company for the purpose of gaining hands-on experience through executing actual tasks and assignments (e.g. doing fashion photography for a customer, or planning and staging an event). Exposure to the world of work (e.g. the photography industry) is an important requirement of any vocational education and training. It is a unique way of learning because it is the process of developing a better understanding through direct experience. During your studies at Prestige Academy you will be exposed to different learning experiences in this regard. Common examples include field trips, role plays, case studies, photography camps, exhibitions and simulated workplace assignments. Notes The experience must be directly relevant and related to your field of study This type of learning is part of your curriculum; therefore time is set aside for it during the academic year. Experiential learninginvolves the acquisition of work-related or occupational knowledge and skills in the workplace, with the formal or non-formal involvement of employers. The duration may vary from program to program and will be communicated to students during the academic year. The experiential learningmust be at a site relevant to your field of study.
