NSC National Senior Certificate Minimum of 30% 39% in the language of learning and teaching of the institution (in our case it is English). Minimum achievement rating of 3, 40%-49% or better in four recognised subjects. Recommended (but not compulsory) subjects: This could include Business Studies, Accounting, Economics, Consumer Studies, Tourism and Computer Application Technology (C.A.T.) Please refer to Department of Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act 101 of 1997), Minimum Admission Requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor s degree programmes requiring a National Senior Certificate.

2 GENERAL INFORMATION The Diploma is provisionally registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework as: Diploma in Business Management Duration: 3 Years NQF Level: 6 Exit Level Credits: 365 SAQA Qualification ID no.: Overview of the Program This qualification provides exciting career opportunities in the field of business. There is a need for qualified candidates that enter the industry with advanced knowledge in the field of business management. Students will develop the necessary business techniques, personal qualities and attitudes for successful career progression. Once qualified, the graduate will have a wide range of career options such as becoming an Administrative Manager, Credit Controller, Administrative Assistant, Personal Assistant, Debtors Controller/Clerk, Financial Assistant, Administrative Controller, or Marketing Consultant. The graduate may also choose to become self-employed in any of these career options. YEAR 1 Subject 1: Entrepreneurship This module introduces the student to the entrepreneurial world and creates a platform for more advanced studies in this field. Students will explore the unique characteristics of the Entrepreneur as an individual who seizes opportunities to develop new products and services which satisfy the multiple needs of consumers with limited resources. Specific techniques for releasing creativity in the development and growth of new business ventures will be presented in practical terms. The differences between concepts such as: Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship ; creativity and innovation ; feasibility and viability, will also be explained with the aim to sensitise students for business opportunities even within existing and well established business environments. This module finally introduces the student to the requirements of a structured mini-business plan. The role of women as emerging entrepreneurs is also highlighted, accompanied with base-line knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing legal business forms available to entrepreneurs in South Africa. Subject 2: Business Communication This module will equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to perform effectively and understand and apply key concepts in effective verbal and non-verbal communication within the business work environment. In particular attention is paid to the nature and dimensions of verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as internal and external communication within organisational structures. Subject 3: Information Administration Systems This is a generic module. It was originally developed for potential employees in the business or public services sector. Due to the trend of computing many business tasks (administration, accounting, information systems, communication, marketing, etc) in all fields of work, it is required that all employees today must have a basic level of computer literacy, being competent in the use of software packages such as MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS- PowerPoint as well as in utilizing and the internet. Added to this, basic computer literacy is a prerequisite for any learning program in the ICT field.

3 This module will equip students with knowledge and skills in utilizing the computer for common workplace tasks such as accessing information sources via internet, word processing, sending and receiving , preparing MS- PowerPoint presentations, and compiling a budget. The module provides students the opportunity to master these software packages through hands-on experience, and apply their knowledge in various assignments. As to collect, organise and evaluate information in a concise way using effective communication skills. Subject 4: Business Management This module introduces the student to the business world and key processes for effective business management. In particular, attention is paid to the underpinning theory and concepts of business management, management principles, and related processes, aspects of functional management with integration with contemporary management issues such as globalisation, knowledge management and productivity. Subject 5: Business Marketing This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the marketing process. In particular, it gives a concise and contemporary overview of marketing, and examines the role and practice of marketing within the changing business environment, the marketing process, segmentation, targeting and positioning, and the extended marketing mix, as well as different marketing segments and contexts. Subject 6: Administrative Management This module equips the student with knowledge about information management to able students to manage the information needs of the organization so that timely, relevant and accurate information is available to managers at all levels so that they can make meaningful decisions. In particular, attention is paid to the role and support functions of administrative management within an organisation, information systems and the management of information, the office environment, as well as visual presentation of information. Subject 7: Accounting for Financial Decision-Making This module serves as a foundation to more advanced studies in bookkeeping and accounting. It provides the student with an orientation to core concepts, principles and processes, starting with a brief revisit to the different types of businesses combined with the basic concepts and principles of financial accounting. In particular, attention is paid to source documents and banking procedures, the double-entry system, payment and receipt transactions, credit sales and purchase transactions, as well as elementary year-end procedures. YEAR 2 Subject 1: Information Administration Systems Pastel Accounting This module builds on Information Administration Systems 22. It equips the student with knowledge on application of computerised accounting systems. In particular, attention is paid to PC utilities to perform accounting tasks, create customer and supplier accounts, create and operate inventories, as well as process orders and record and process Invoices. Subject 2: Administrative Management 2 The aim of this module is to enable students to manage the information needs of the organization so that timely, relevant and accurate information is available to managers at all levels so that they can make meaningful decisions. It also equips the student with knowledge and insights into information management, productivity, problem solving and decision-making, managing cultural diversity as well as business ethics. Subject 3: Organizational Behaviour This module equips the student with knowledge on the complex context in which organisations in South African operate. In particular, attention is paid to organisational structure and culture, common approaches to management and leadership, motivational theories as well as working with others, including teamwork and group dynamics.

4 Subject 4: Entrepreneurship 2 This module builds on knowledge acquired in Entrepreneurship 1, and prepares candidates that prefer the route of potential owners of a business enterprise. This module will thus equip the candidate with an in-depth understanding of requirements to ensure success in establishing and running a new business venture. The candidate also will acquire detailed knowledge of the vital requirements of a well structured business plan. Such ingredients include the proposed products and/or services, the marketing plan, required infrastructure/facilities, and the management plan. Apart from that, attention will be paid to required financial matters, including the financial plan, start-up capital, projected income, projected balance sheet, projected cash flow statement, and projected capital equipment. Ways in which sources such as the Internet can be used to compile business plans, the selection of a specific plan, and modification of a chosen plan to suit personal needs (customizing) will be explored. The candidate will also acquire advanced knowledge of the required documentation related to a business plan, including the presentation thereof by way of a structured document containing all vital information. Subject 5: Strategic Management The aim of this module is to enable students to understand strategic analysis, choice and the implementation structure. It equips the student with knowledge to apply and evaluate analytical tools in the development of strategic plans and strategies. An organization needs a reference point for decision making, which can be provided by the strategy and the planning process involved in designing the strategy. Subject 6: Financial Management 2 This module equips the student with knowledge about bookkeeping and accounting practice. In particular, attention is paid to basic concepts and principal of financial accounting; going concern, matching, consistency and prudence; the valuation of accounts; year-end procedures; profit and loss calculation, adjustment of income and expense accounts, financial partnership and financial statements for sole proprietor traders and close corporations, as well as interpretation of financial statements. Subject 7: Business Management This module introduces the student to the business world and key processes for effective business management. In particular, attention is paid to the underpinning concepts of business management, related processes, management principles, and basic management tasks, aspects of functional management such as marketing, financial management and public relations, as well as contemporary management issues such as globalisation, knowledge management and productivity. YEAR 3 Subject 1: Business Legal Practice This module will equip the student with knowledge about a variety of legal issues applicable to business management. It sets the foundation for business management practice that complies with relevant laws of the country. In particular, attention is paid to the legal system in South Africa, the Law of Contract, types of contracts and related formalities, the National Credit Act, leases and functions, business enterprises, the Law of Trust, creation, office, the administration of Trust, Trust beneficiaries, as well as revocation and termination of the Trust. Subject 2: Strategic Management 3 This module builds on Strategic Management 212 and will equip students with in-depth knowledge of key issues in strategic management, including the business model, environmental analysis, strategic positioning, and dynamics of competitors, culture and international strategy. It will also develop the ability to integrate the knowledge previous acquired in a holistic manner.

5 Subject 3: Consumer Behaviour This module will equip students with knowledge about consumer behaviour. This will develop an understanding of market characteristics, the purchase decision-making process, as well as individual and group variables and situations that influence customer buying behaviour. Subject 4: Financial Management 3 This module builds on knowledge acquired in Bookkeeping and Accounting 222. In particular, attention is paid to an introduction to cost and management accounting, valuation and allocation of inventories and overheads, the manufacturing of accounts, budgeting and standard costing, an introduction to financial management, as well as accounting ethics. Subject 5: Information Administration Systems 3 Advanced Pastel Computerized Payroll System Advanced functions of a computerized accounting system This module builds on Information Administration Systems 1 and 2. It consists of two parts. Section 1 deals with aspects of the computerized payroll system such as setting up transactions, creating bank and branch codes, pay points, job and cost centre codes, and creating employee data and process pay slips. Section 2 deals with advanced functions of a computerized accounting system such as advanced functions in the general ledger, advanced customer functions, using Bank Manager option to process cash books. Subject 6: Work-Integrated Learning Work-integrated learning (also called internship or professional practicum) happens in your final year of study. It involves learning through placement at a company for the purpose of gaining hands-on experience through executing actual tasks and assignments (e.g. business environment) Work-integrated learning is structured around a clear purpose, performance (outcome) targets and procedures in collaboration with the employer and lecturer(s) concerned. It provides students with an opportunity to acquire firsthand experience of the world of work in the industry concerned. Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge of workplace practices as well as a broad knowledge and understanding of how the host organisation operates. They should develop competencies that are impossible or highly unlikely in the classroom environment, for instance the ability to deal with challenges and problems within context of the workplace itself. They will also develop the ability to integrate knowledge and skills across all program modules at practical level. Career Opportunities Customer Business Manager Administrative Manager Supervisor Credit Controller Marketing Manager Language Policy The primary language of teaching is English; therefore all courseware, learning support materials such as study guides and assignment briefs as well as test and exam papers are in English. However, we accommodate Afrikaans speaking students to a certain degree, depending on circumstances. Students may hand in assignments and/or answer a test/examination paper in Afrikaans if the lecturer and assessor concerned have the required level of Afrikaans proficiency. Mode of Instruction Our mode of instruction is contact; there is no online or distance learning option.

6 HOW DO I PROCEED WITH MY REGISTRATION? You will receive an acceptance letter in the post/ informing you of the acceptance or non-acceptance of the application. Your student number will be issued. You will then need to make payment of the program deposit by no later than 15 November (See last page for details.)

7 DO YOU WANT TO USE OUR ACCOMMODATION FACILITY? This hostel registration form part of the same registration form. The final date for hostel registration is 15 September You will be required to pay a non- refundable hostel registration fee of R by 15 September 2013, and a refundable breakage deposit of R on/before 1 January Senior students will receive preference in choosing their preferred room before rooms are allocated to new students. Single and shared rooms are available. Shared rooms accommodate no more than 2 students. No food will be supplied as kitchens are equipped for self-catering. Communal areas in each student house are equipped with microwave, kettle, toasters, etc. The ablution facilities are equipped with showers, basins and toilets for each residence. The residence is closed during each term break. REFUND AND CANCELLATION Refer to the registration form. BURSARIES AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE A separate bursary application form is available from the Marketing Office / By filling in this form doesn t automatically mean that the student will receive a bursary. Only applicants whom applied and paid their application fee and acceptance deposit on/before 15 November 2013 will be taken into consideration. Terms and conditions as per bursary application form / policy applies. Prestige Academy endeavours to assist students with bursaries solely from its annual business profits. This bursary amount and conditions differ from year to year. The bursary policy can be viewed at the marketing office. The scope of bursaries offered by this institution address specific challenges that parents and students in higher education are facing today, but is also motivated by humanitarian and academic reasons such as rewarding excellent academic performance. As a private training provider, Prestige Academy (Pty) Ltd does not receive any government funding by way of annual subsidies such as is the case at public higher education institutions (universities). To make bursary provisions, the Directors allocate in its annual budget, the amount of R for this purpose. The amount for bursaries is fixed every year. Once the available funds have been exhausted, no additional funds will be available until the next academic year. The directors may cancel or decrease the allocated bursary funds depending on the finances of the business at a given time. Any applicant that does not adhere to the 80% class attendance will forfeit a bursary. Students may ONLY use bursaries for credit to the tuition fees. Bursaries are awarded in two categories, namely Academic, and Disadvantaged. STUDENT BANK LOANS Applicants who want to make use of a student loan at a financial institution are required to obtain a PRE-APPROVAL from the bank. In the event of a student loan not being granted, the account payer and co-account payer (spouse) must still provide the academy with all the documentation required on the registration contract. The academy will then determine whether the account payer will be able to settle the debt on a monthly basis without a student bank loan. TUITION FEES

The Subsidized Annual Fee is R2700 per year. Shuttle can be paid in 10 instalments, of which the first instalment is due on 1 February 2014 and the tenth instalment due on 1 November Note: The Academy reserves the right to make changes to the shuttle fee based on increase in petrol. PARKING Students are required to apply for parking on/before 15 November Parking is limited and therefore by filling in the application for parking form, doesn t automatically mean that the parking application has been approved. The Academy will inform you in writing of the allocation of parking. An amount of R will be charged for a remote. FRIDGE Although the Hostels are equipped with various Fridge/Freezer facilities, we get many requests from parents/students to bring a separate fridge. Only bar-type sized fridges (Height: 84cm x Width: 46cm x Depth: 50cm) will be allowed. Should a person ask permission to bring a different size fridge, an additional fee of R50 will be levied towards electricity usage. All fridges must be equipped with an overflow pan to avoid damage to the floors in the case of fridge leaking water.
