1 2 Medallion Drive p: w: e: Vision Focus Powerful Learners We know what powerful learning is and what powerful learners look like and do STATIONERY 2016 We will once again be selling full stationery packs (books and pencils etc) and half packs (just the books only) next year. You can pre order your child s stationery pack through the school website. No payment is needed until you pick it up in The office will be open next year on Wednesday 27th January and Thursday 28th January 10am-2pm each day. The dates are also on the website. For parents of new entrants, please check with the teacher as to what you will require next year as you may not need a full stationery pack. To pre order stationery please visit the website and click the Stationery tab. The option to pre order will close on Monday 30th November. It is important that children have the correct stationery. Stationery lists for 2016 will be on the website shortly. THANK YOU Thank you to Pak N Save Albany for donating 350 apples and muffins for Year 5 and 6 camps. We appreciate their help and this helps bring the cost down. PTA DISCO The PTA Disco was held a couple of weeks ago and the amount raised was $ Thank you to the PTA who organised this event. This year we used the website School Interviews which meant that the roster was available on line for parents to put their name down to help. This was very successful and we will continue to use this website for various PTA events in the future. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who worked on stalls; especially the tough guys who cooked in the heavy rain. Thanks also to MTF for the use of the barbecue and Trish Leddy from Harcourts for the use of the ice cream and coffee van. THANK YOU Thanks to David Tait who has donated a box of hockey gear to the school. We appreciate your generosity and our teams look forward to using the gear. 2 STAFFING and CLASS ORGANISATION: We are in the process of finalising our staffing for Once this is complete teachers will start to look at placing children in classes for next year. We spend a lot of time on these classes; taking into account a number of different factors such as friendships, preferred learning styles, strengths and needs across the curriculum. Please do not request a particular teacher for your child for next year as we are not able to accommodate every parents request. Where possible teachers will place your child with friends or children they work well with. However it is not always in your child s best interests to be in the same class as a particular friend. They can still play with each other at break times and out of school but sometimes best friends do not always work well together. You will be told what class your child is in for 2016 and who their teacher is when you receive their end of year report on Friday 4 December. Children will get to meet their new teacher and the other children in their class on Monday 7 December. ONEPOTO CULTURAL FESTIVAL: Our Kapa Haka are performing at the Onepoto Cultural Festival at Onepoto Primary on Friday 20 November. The Kapa Haka has performed at the Festival, the largest cultural festival on the North Shore, for the past 4 years. This year they will be performing on the outdoor stage at 1.35 p.m. All parents are welcome to attend the festival to support our Kapa Haka and experience a great celebration of cultural diversity on the North Shore. There will be a performance in front of the whole school on Thursday 19 th November at 2:15pm and you are invited to come along to watch. Thanks to Mrs Rose who has taken over working with the Kapa Haka and to Maria Kepa Allen and Shelley Te Maro, who have been coaching the Kapa Haka to ensure their performance is inspiring and authentic. COLOURED PENCILS FOR SALE We have packets of coloured pencils for sale at the office for $5.00. There are 10 in a pack and they are triangular shaped which are easy for small hands to hold. These would be great for Christmas stocking fillers! HELPING OUR SCHOOL WITH WAREHOUSE STATIONERY It s easy to help our school every time you purchase items from the Warehouse Stationery. Every purchase earns points for our school. When you purchase items ask for Oteha Valley School to receive points. Thank you to those families who have supported our school. So far we have purchased head sets for classrooms. To find out more about this go to THANK YOU I would like to thank Jack Bao, one of our parents, who has been a member of the Board of Trustees, for approximately 12 months. Jack was co-opted as a liaison person with our Chinese families. Jack set up a webchat for Chinese families and was able to keep them informed about Board decisions as well as bringing their viewpoints to Board discussions. Jack is leaving due to work commitments and I would like to extend our thanks to him for his work on the Board. Board elections will be held in June 2016, so make sure you read the newsletter to find out more information closer the time.

3 END OF YEAR EVENTS: There are some traditional end-of-the year events coming up soon. On Monday 7 December we have our final House Assembly where our outgoing House Captains and Deputy Captains welcome our 2016 House Captains in a special assembly. Our whole school Awards Assembly is on the 8 December. Throughout the year teachers take special note of children who consistently demonstrate the qualities of our school values. Each teacher selects one child to receive a certificate for one of the values and these are presented at the Awards Assembly. This is also when children who have attended school every day of the year receive a 100% attendance certificate. Other children who have had whole school responsibilities are honoured as well. You will be informed if your child will be receiving an award so that you can attend if you wish. We ask that you do not tell your child as we keep it a surprise. The 9th December is a very special evening for the Year 6s who are invited to a Graduation Dinner put on by the school, to mark the end of their primary schooling. Dress for this event is formal with boys wearing long pants and a collared shirt. Parents are only admitted at the end of the dinner. Thursday 10 December is when our Year 6s present their Leavers assembly. Year 6 trophies are awarded and all Year 6s let off balloons in our school colours at the conclusion of the assembly. This started as a tradition when the school first opened in 2004 and it has continued every year since. Year 6 students look forward to this as a moving end to their time at Oteha Valley School. TRAMPOLINE SUCCESS Congratulations to Brianna and Blake Masterson who both competed in the Schools Trampoline Competition last weekend. Blake competed in the level 3, year 1-4 section and placed 2nd, while Brianna placed 2nd in the level 6 year 5-6 competition. Well done to you both! BOT NEWS Recently we received feedback from some of you regarding proposed changes to the speed bumps on Medallion Drive. Auckland Transport received a variety of submissions and have decided to leave the humps, and will upgrade them when funding is available. This acknowledges the safety concerns raised by some submitters. As we are a relatively new Board of Trustees, we have been busy over the last couple of months attending training and working with an external consultant to review the policies for the school, that provide the agreed framework for how we support the school in our governance role. These sessions have also given us the chance to spend some time getting to know each other outside our formal monthly meetings. Each month we receive reports from Rose to keep us up to date on academic achievement and other things such as dealings with the Ministry of Education - an area which is time consuming for staff but really important to ensure they support our direction and growth. Planning is also underway to consider how best to use resources to serve our community of students and their families as we head into Justine Haves BOT Member Rose Neal Principal
