3 INTRODUCTION Immerse yourself in over 100 years of the rich sport heritage of British Columbia. Over 325 individuals and 54 teams have been inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame since Using the stories of our athletes and our expansive collection of over 25,000 sports artifacts and 20,000+ images, the BC Sports Hall of Fame inspires, motivates and educates individuals to pursue their dreams and to find the hero within. Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future Sport has enormous potential to define how we live and learn, to shape and define who we are. Your BC Sports Hall of Fame experience begins with the stories of our athletes who have accomplished greatness and brought pride to British Columbia and to Canada. It continues through our outreach and education programs to inspire people young and old to pursue their dreams. 3

4 LOCATION The BC Sports Hall of Fame (BCSHF) is strategically located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, and physically located within BC Place, which was home of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. BC Place seats 55,000 people, and is the official home of the BC Lions (Canadian Football League) and Vancouver Whitecaps (Major League Soccer). Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, U2, the Rolling Stones and Madonna are among the special guests who have staged events inside the facility. Guests enter the BC Sports Hall of Fame through Gate A of BC Place. This is approximately 50 meters from the intersection of Robson and Beatty Streets and the new Terry Fox Plaza and monument recently created by artist Douglas Coupland. FACILITY DESCRIPTION Guests to the BC Sports Hall of Fame are enthralled, entertained and educated through interactive exhibits, videos and displays and always inspired. The rich history of sport in British Columbia, as well as the extraordinary accomplishments of British Columbian athletes are presented in over 15,000 square feet of exhibit space. The BC Sports Hall of Fame boasts 10 unique galleries featuring over 100 years of BC sport heritage and stories. 4

5 MUSEUM GALLERIES Vancouver 2010 Gallery: Celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games We are proud to announce our new featured gallery! 4,500 feet of exhibit space has been dedicated to showcasing the artifacts and stories from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. Among the more than 1,800 treasures from the 2010 Winter Games that will be on display are: o o o o The team podium used during medal ceremonies at BC Place 2010 Olympic torch donated by Nancy Greene (pictured to the right) that was used to light the cauldron at BC Place during the Opening Ceremonies signed by the final 5 torchbearers Wayne Gretzky, Steve Nash, Nancy Greene, Rick Hansen and Catriona Le May Doan. Full set of Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic medals. Roberto Luongo s Vancouver 2010 Olympic goaltending mask (replica) BC Place Gallery (Including Window Looking Into BC Place) This one-of-a-kind feature enhances the guest experience with a view inside the 55,000 seat, retractable-roofed stadium, which was home of the Opening, Closing Ceremonies, and evening medal ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Games. 5

6 Terry Fox Gallery Terrance Stanley Fox is a true Canadian icon. Despite losing his right leg to cancer, he inspired the world with his determination to run The Marathon of Hope across Canada. Though he tragically passed away before completing his journey, his vision continues to inspire generations of people from around the world. The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is truly proud to house the only permanent gallery in the world celebrating Terry s inspirational life. Rick Hansen Gallery 25 th Anniversary of the Man in Motion Tour in 2012 Known to the world as the Man in Motion, Rick Hansen literally wheeled around the world in his wheelchair! Over a period of 2 years, he visited 34 countries and amassed a staggering 25,000 miles in his quest to raise awareness for people with disabilities and money for spinal cord research. The gallery features Rick s Man in Motion wheelchair, competitive wheelchair marathon medals, world tour memorabilia and video footage. 6

7 Aboriginal Sport Gallery We proudly present the Aboriginal Sport Gallery, the only gallery of its kind in Canada, if not North America. The exhibits provide a complex history of sporting events, athletic accomplishments, moments of celebration and participation by the Aboriginal community in British Columbia. Greg Moore Gallery Through 800 square feet of interactive displays, the unique story of Honoured Member Greg Moore is not just told, it is celebrated. The central feature of the gallery is Greg s Indy racing car complete with sounds only a 900 horse power engine can make. This is the same car he drove in 97 when he won his first CART race in Milwaukee. Other highlights from the gallery include: o a poster of his boyhood hero Ayrton Senna, which used to adorn his bedroom wall o a high-school yearbook message from his pal Brendan Morrison o an autographed Fender given to Greg by the members of Metallica o an interactive race car simulator, so visitors can test their own driving skills Special Exhibit Gallery: The Dream Card Collection In celebration of the opening of our new museum, visitors will enjoy viewing this exceptional display of rare hockey cards. The BC Sports Hall of Fame s Dream Card Collection contains every mass-produced hockey card from between1951 and 1995! This priceless collection thought to be the only one of its kind anywhere contains sought after gems such as rookie cards of Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Trevor Linden, Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, etc., as well as rare cards of Maurice Richard, Terry Sawchuck and other all-stars. 7

8 Participation Zone One of the most popular areas of the Museum! Connect with your sport heroes through interactive games such as a rotating climbing wall, soccer simulator, Immersa-Dome Paralympic sit-ski and Olympic bobsled simulator, timed running track, bubble hockey, foosball table, and mini curling. The BC Sports Hall of Fame really is the only museum where you can break a sweat! 8

9 A. BIRTHDAY PARTY ZONE Children s birthday parties are held in a brand new space specifically designed for the next generation of BC Heroes! 11 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Booking and Payment Process Q. What is the booking process? A. If you are interested in hosting your child s birthday party or special event at the BC Sports Hall of Fame, please call to discuss your event, date of choice and schedule a site visit. Once the site visit has occurred or the event has been confirmed, a credit card number will be kept in our files and a $100 deposit will be charged. Q. When is the deposit and final payments due? A. A $100 deposit is required by credit card at the time of execution of contract. The remaining $150 (+HST) is due seven days prior to the event. Q. What is the cancellation policy? A. If you cancel the event within: 30+ days, you will be charged a $50 administration fee, and the remainder of the deposit will be refunded days, your credit card on file will be charged 50% of the rental fee days, your credit card on file will be charged100% of the rental fee. Access and Parking Q. Where is the BC Sports Hall of Fame? A. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located at Gate A of BC Place, north of the Terry Fox Memorial Plaza (closest intersection Robson and Beatty Streets) 11 Q. Where is parking located?

12 A. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located within BC Place, which has nearly a dozen large parking lots and parkades within a two-block radius. In addition, there is metered parking on Robson Street and Beatty Street. Rogers Arena 12

13 Q. Is there an area for unloading/loading? A. For loading and unloading of an event, access to the concourse in front of the BC Sports Hall of Fame is available: Driving heading north on Beatty Street, turn right into parking lot (in between Robson and Georgia) that belongs to the Industry building in front of BC Place. With prior notice to the BC Sports Hall of Fame, the yellow stanchions will be removed and you will be able to drive onto the concourse. Park beside the Gate A sign and load into/out of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Event Details Q. What is the ideal/maximum suggested age for children attending a Children s Birthday Party? A. We recommend that children be at least 6 years old to fully appreciate the experience. The maximum suggested age for Children s Birthday Parties is 12 years old. Q. Are there facilities available for catering? A. There is a fridge available to store your birthday cake. Q. Can we bring our own food? A. Yes. Families are required to bring/order their own food for the birthday party. Food is not provided by the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Typically families order pizza and bring their own cake(s) or cupcakes. Please refrain from bringing messy food that may stain carpets and display cases. Food MUST be eaten in the Birthday Party Zone and not transported elsewhere into the adjoining galleries. Q. Is alcohol allowed? A. No. Adults are NOT allowed to consume alcohol during children s birthday parties or bring alcohol onto the premise. Q. Are we able to put up decorations/posters? A. The Birthday Party Zone is a flexible space. A chalkboard wall allows families to decorate the wall with drawings and writing. Q. What should parents bring with them to make a successful party? A. Food (Lunch, snacks, birthday cake, etc), Drinks (Juice boxes, bottled water, soft drinks, etc), Plates, Napkins, Utensils, Knife for cutting cake, Serving utensils, Table cloths, Banners, Gift bags, Prizes for games, etc. 13
