2 Boxwood Recreation Center The kids at Boxwood Recreation Center are enjoying two of Boxwoods' weekly programs, Game Night and Girl Talk. Girl Talk is a program for girls ages to discuss different topics that interest them and meets every 5:00 p.m. Game Night which meets every 5:00 p.m. gives the kids an opportunity to participate in fun board games. 3 Fox Senior Center The Fox Community Center News The seniors who participate at Fox celebrated last Thursday "the first day or Spring" with a birthday dinner. It was truly pot luck as a little bit of this and a little bit of that was put into a stew pot of potatoes and a delicious soup made and enjoyed by all. Our ladies and gentlemen applauded Mrs. Lillian on her cooking skills with just odds and ends! A yummy birthday cake topped the occasion and was donated by Terri Baddy from Georgia Home Health. Be sure and join us next month for Easter Dinner! we're serving it a noon like good ole southerners do. The indoor garden at Fox has been blooming up a storm this month with flowering amaryllises and geraniums that can't seem to get enough of our left over coffee! Once a week any coffee left over is what waters these pots of flowers and ornamentals in the center. The blooming ones were planted back in 2005 and are still showing off their blossoms just like when they were brand new! Drowned in love of the seniors and the strong dark coffee they drink!

4 Fox Senior Center The Fox Community Center News This week our RSVP volunteers celebrated with a center party introducing some new volunteer stations that are seeking their time and talent. Spring was sprung during the event with rows of sweets and salty food stuffs to wet our appetites. If you are interested in volunteering with RSVP please give us a call. We will set you right up with Open Door Community Center Reading Program, the Linus Project, Community Garden, SNACKs, or Hospice. Take your choice as all stations are about giving back to the community. We also have an in-house volunteer program at Parks and Recreation that directs your talents in our multiple buildings, recreation centers and gyms around the city. Plant were you are seeded. Volunteer. For the month of March we have been focusing on volunteers who go over and above the call of duty. We know that there are many people who fit this role and volunteers at the Fox Center are no exception. Nancy Hall, is a great example of a person who loves to volunteer. She gives her time and talent to the Britt David Studio three days a week and to the Fox Community Center two days a week. During this time she sews lap robes for Hospice, reads to kids at Fox School and does crafts with the children at the Boys and Girls Club. Now this is a dedicated lady! We are so glad to have her amongst us. Thanks Nancy! Other dedicated seniors at Fox Community Center include Diane Haskel, Dot Clements, Deborah Brookins, Jessie Foster, Marilyn Magoni and Lillian Scarborough. Thanks Ladies for all you do for our center!

5 South Columbus Senior Center We are finishing out the month with our tea party & bingo. We were still celebrating St. Patrick s Day as our tea party theme. We had an array of finger foods, lots of sweet stuff to choose from and staff prepared some green cup cakes as well. We enjoyed a good crowd and tons of fun to go along with it. Ernie does a great job singing Karaoke for us. He has been trying out some new music that seems to be real popular with this age group. We had a mixture of dance music so that everyone had an opportunity to dance if they wished. About half way through the party, one of our senior s daughter, who has a great voice performed a duet with Ernie. They sang Golden Rings and just let me say that words alone cannot say how beautiful their voices were together. I did video them together so that I could brag on Face Book about the talent our seniors have here. I never pass up a chance to let everyone know how much fun we have at our center. It gives the senior population many things to get up and look forward to each day! We also had a couple other of our seniors sing during the open mic potion of the party. Even if you don t sing or dance, it s still a great event to come out and enjoy every month, plus it s free with your membership!

6 South Columbus Senior Center Next was our monthly bingo sponsored by River Towne Center. Kelly and his partners take turns coming out once a month and they also furnish all the prizes. They call all the games as well, and do a great job! This free monthly Bingo gives the seniors an opportunity to play without worrying about getting to the store for a gift to bring. The gifts all come in bags and we have to hold the seniors back from the table because everyone wants to peak to see which bag they want to pick! We decided to institute a no peaking rule in an effort to give everyone an equal opportunity to win a great prize. Many thanks to Kelly & River Towne for coming out and providing the seniors with valuable information about their Health Care needs and any questions that may arise during visits!

7 Athletics USSSA Conference Affiliate Tournament On March 22, 2014, Columbus Parks and Recreation and JM Sports hosted a USSSA Conference Affiliate softball tournament at South Commons Softball Complex. Eighteen men s teams and four women s teams from all over the southeast came to Columbus to participate in this tournament. Broughton Pharmacy from Macon, GA took home the championship in the men s division and is pictured below. Adult Softball League: Our Adult Softball League is well under way with all leagues having played some games. Men s Open divisions play on Monday and Wednesday nights, Men s Church divisions play on Tuesday nights, and Coed Open divisions play on Thursday nights. All games are played at South Commons Softball Complex and game times are 7:00pm, 8:15pm, and 9:30pm. Please visit the website below for schedules and updates.

8 Cooper Creek Tennis Center Special Olympics CCTC played host to the Special Olympics Tennis on Friday, March 21 st. We are honored to be involved with this fantastic event.

9 Cooper Creek Tennis Center Local League Season The local league season will finish on March 30 th and quite a few of the races could come down to the final weekend. The Adult 18+ league plays on Saturdays and the 40+ league play on Sundays. The current standings for both leagues are below. 18+ Standings 40+ Standings Jr. Team Tennis Players ages are introduced to competitive team tennis. Teams are grouped based on age and NTRP ability levels The program focuses on fun, fitness and the social benefits of tennis. Matches are played on Sundays from 1:30-3:00 and/or Friday afternoons from 4:30-5:30. JTT Standings High School Tennis High school matches for this week: 3/31-4/4 Spring Break! 10 Therapeutics Special Olympics Games Special Olympic training is held every Thursday at 10AM. Volunteer CORTA Tennis Coach Bernard Francis has been training the athletes since January. Athletes have been practicing their serving, front hand stroke, backhand stroke, alternating strokes, and volleys. On Friday, March 21, 2014 the TR participants competed against CORTA athletes and Shaw High School athletes in the local Special Olympics Tennis Tournament. The participants are continuing their training to compete in the Special Olympics State games. State games will be held, May 30- June 1, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia at Emory University.

14 Columbus Aquatic Center Senior Aqua Programs Columbus Aquatic Center Aqua Aerobics Water is an ideal exercise medium for seniors due to its natural buoyancy, resistance, cooling effect and decreased joint impact. According to the Aquatic Exercise Association, health ailments such as diabetes, arthritis, menopause, cardiovascular problems, back prolems and osteoporosis can benefit from water Aerobics. Water Walking Water walking is an excellent aerobic and calorie burning workout. It is also a wonderful way to keep active if you re nursing an injury or if you are just tired of hitting the pavement every day! Water creates times the resistance of air You can burn 550 calories an hour Walking in water for 30 minutes is equivalent to walking on land for 2 hours We have a variety of classes available at the Columbus Aquatic Center in addition to our lap swim: Aqua Yoga Aqua Fit & Tone Guided Lap Swim Swim Lessons One Day Pass: $3 3 Month Pass: $70 6 Month Pass: $130 1 Year Pass: $180 Membership fees for lap swim Rates available for anyone aged 55 or older. residing inside Muscogee County to receive these rates.
