FCAT Math Assessment The Third Fifth grade FCAT math test is a multiple choice exam that covers all aspects of math from addition to algebra. We provide daily FCAT math practice to our students. Example: 40 Day Countdown. Each morning our students complete 5 FCAT style math problems for morning work. At Spanish Lake, we begin each math lesson by reviewing those problems with multiple ways to solve them before beginning the daily lesson. Students also receive computer assisted instruction using Success maker, Gizmo, Florida Achieves and Brain Pop. Students will be assessed in the skill areas of addition, subtraction, rounding, telling time, multiplication, geometry, measurement, reading graphs, division, probability, fractions, and decimals.
Everyday Math Opportunities: Cereal Box Newspaper Fast food paper bag Supermarket/Stores Multiplication CD in the car Recipe or easy mix boxes Waiting room magazine with educational emphasis Card or board game Flashcards Street signs & billboards
Ways Parents Could Help Learning doesn t stop HERE. Step 1 Read problem carefully. Step 2 Underline Question What are they asking you to find out? Step 3 Circle clue words. Step 4 Circle Numbers. Step 5 Determine what action to take to solve problem.
Steps to Prepare for FCAT Math Provide assistance and practice flash cards using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Supervise/Tutor your child with their daily math homework. Ask your child to log in to FCAT Explorer (Florida Achieves), Brain Pop and Gizmo on home computer.
Parent Involvement Practice Computation 3 rd Grade Multiplication 4 th Grade Equivalent Fractions/Long Division/2 digit Multiplication. 5 th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions/Decimals/Percents
Why Do We Call Them Gizmos? We call them Gizmos because virtual manipulatives is too difficult to say! All kidding aside, the use of the word Gizmo to describe our multimedia activities goes back to the origins of ExploreLearning. Dr. Raman Pfaff first coined the term "gizmo" to describe the new learning tool he created while he was a graduate student in nuclear physics. When Dr. Pfaff joined ExploreLearning (employee number 2), the name Gizmos came with him and it stuck. We like the name Gizmo not only because it sounds fun, which the Gizmos are, but also because it implies that the Gizmo is part of a larger machine the whole of the teaching and learning process.
Test Taking Strategies Read the directions carefully. Ask your teacher to explain any directions you do not understand. Be sure to fill in the answer bubbles correctly. Do not make any stray marks around answer spaces. When you have finished each problem, reread it to make sure your answer is reasonable. Check each answer to make sure it is the best answer for the question. Relax. Some people get nervous about tests. It s natural. Just do your best!
We Want CALM Students! As a parent you are in the greatest position to prepare your child to succeed in FCAT testing. During the weeks of testing please try to calm, encourage, and reassure your child. Tell them that they are great! Also, that they will do great on the TEST!
