1 QUINCY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Scholarship Update February 2016 What are scholarships? The QHS Guidance Office will actively compile and update this listing of scholarships. Scholarships are free money that is available to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of school. Students have to apply for scholarships, which are awarded on a case-by-case basis, often based on merit/achievement. If a student receives a scholarship, it does not have to be paid back. What do you need to have to qualify for a scholarship? Every scholarship has varying requirements including its own application, which you will need to get and complete but it is a good idea to pull together a folder of the following information (or as much of it as you can), as almost all scholarships will ask for some combination of the following: Essay(s) Letter(s) of recommendation Writing sample Resume (including all in-school and out-of-school involvement beginning freshman year) Transcript of grades Copy of Student Aid Report (by completing your FAFSA) Parent and student tax returns and W-2 forms Copy of financial aid award letter Beware of Scholarship Scams! Be cautious of scholarship applications that require an application fee. Also proceed with caution with scholarships matching services that promise results and sales pitches that describe themselves as financial aid workshops or seminars. Customize your scholarship search! Create a profile on these websites to get a list of scholarships that match your needs. Don t forget to read ALL of the eligibility and application requirements to be sure you qualify for the scholarships you re applying to

3 The Illinois Odd Fellow-Rebekah Scholarship Program Applicants must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA and have financial need. Students will need to submit the application, an essay, high school transcript, a federal 1040 form, a recommendation letter from a counselor, teacher, and community member. Amount: $1,000 (there are 10 scholarships available) Deadline: Must be postmarked by February 28, for application and specific instructions. Illinois PTA Scholarship High School seniors graduating from an Illinois Public school; Grade Point Average 3.0 or above on a non-weighted 4.0 scale. Please convert the GPA if it is weighted and/or 5.0 scale. Enrolling in a college or university in education or education-related degree program, which may include but not limited to: Librarians, Instructional Media Specialists, School Nurse, School Psychologists, or Social Workers (all of which require certification from a State Board of Education). Amount: 1 st Place $3,000 2 nd Place $2,000 Deadline: February 15, Beta Sigma Psi Educational Foundation Christian Leadership Award Open to Lutheran men starting college Fall 2016 at University of Illinois, Indiana University, and Purdue University. Amount: $1,500 Deadline: February 16, 2016 Martin Luther Scholarship Open to Lutheran men who will be attending their first year at any accredited 4-year college or University. Applicants should be male, confirmed members of a Lutheran congregation and starting college Fall 2016 semester. Amount: $2,000 Deadline: February 16,

4 Create-a-Greeting Card Scholarship The Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship Contest is open to currently enrolled high school and college students in the United States. To enter, you must design a holiday, get well, or birthday greeting card and submit your work to be judged. Your photo, art, or graphics submitted must be your own original work and you must be at least 14 years of age to be eligible for this award. Available to: High School Freshman through Graduate Students, Year 5 Amount: $10,000 Deadline: February 26, st Farm Credit Services Graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into an agriculture or agriculture-related curriculum at a university, college or community college and either reside or attend high school within 1 st Farm Credit Service territory. Amount: $1,500 (24 individual scholarships) Deadline: March 31, Aspiring Nurse Scholarship Open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN/LVN, AND, and BSN programs. Amount: $1,000 Deadline: June 30, National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) Scott/St. Louis Chapter High school seniors, graduating in the spring of 2016, or full time college students. Must be enrolled in an accredited bachelors or graduate degree program in All students may apply but preference is given to students pursuing Business, Transportation Logistics, and Physical Distribution and related courses of study. Amount: $4,000 (2) and $2,500 (2). An additional $1,500 is set aside for students enrolled in a two-year associate degree or trade certification program. 5 Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation Scholarships The Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation supports a scholarship program each year that provides graduating Illinois High School students a scholarship for their continuing education. for various scholarship information and to apply Deadline: March 1, 2016 Adams County Farm Bureau Foundation Scholarship To be eligible for consideration an applicant must be a Farm Bureau member, spouse or child of member, high school graduate or graduating in 2016, resident of Illinois, exhibit potential for successful completion of course of study and be a full-time student. Application form and additional information is available in the guidance office. Amount: $1,000 (3) Deadline: March 8, 2016 Altrusa International of Quincy Foundation This scholarship is for a high school senior enrolling in an accredited college, university or trade school. Eligibility requirements: High school senior, GPA 2.8 (C average or greater), Adams County, Illinois resident and US citizen, full-time enrollment in accredited college, university or technical school, be willing to give community service in the future. May not be a member of or a dependent of a member of Altrusa Int l. Quincy IL. Application available in QHS Guidance Office. Amount: Maximum of $1,000 ($500 per semester) Deadline: Must be postmarked by March 15, 2016 State Farm Good Neighbor Scholarship The State Farm Good neighbor Scholarship doesn t require a high GPA, but rather focuses on students who are leaders and volunteers in their communities and demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be a 2016 graduating senior, have a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, plan to enroll full-time for the academic year at an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university or vocationaltechnical school, and be a U.S. citizen. Deadline: March 2, 2016

6 2016 Baxter Memorial Scholarship The Baxter Memorial Scholarship awarded annually to a high school senior residing or attending school with the counties of Adams, Brown, Hancock, McDonough, Pike or Schuyler in Illinois who will attend an ABET-accredited engineering or technical program at a four-year college or university. More than one applicant may be chosen. Applicant must be a US citizen. Applications will be evaluated based on grade point average, internship/co-op experience and community involvement, and answers to questions on the application. Application forms are available in the QHS Guidance Office. Amount: Maximum $1,000 Deadline: March 4, Student-View Scholarship Program No minimums SAT/ACT score or grade point average, no essay, no application fees. Simply log on to and complete a minute application survey about colleges in your area Amount: 1 - $4,000, 2 - $1,000, and 10 - $500 scholarships Deadline: April 22, 2016 Buick Achievers Scholarship Program Extraordinary people all have a story. Seeking to overcome obstacles, the steps they have taken, bettering themselves and their communities. The Buick Achievers Scholarship program recognizes and supports their journey. We want to help those who put forth the effort and find success both in and out of the classroom, yet are unable to attend college without financial assistance. We encourage the following to apply: high school seniors and current under-graduates, those who plan to enroll full-time at a four-year college or university in and plan to major in a specified course of study focused on engineering, technology or design, with an interest in the automotive industry. Deadline: February 29, 2016 Illinois Lumber & Material Dealers Association Educational Foundation Scholarships These scholarships will assist and encourage qualified students to further or continue their interest in selecting the lumber and building materials field as a career. Any student who is enrolled full-time in a certificate or degree program in an accredited trade school, 2 year junior college or 4 year college or university, and who is a resident of Illinois is eligible to apply. Applications are available in the QHS Guidance Office. Amount: Each scholarship will be not less than $500 and not more than $1,000. Deadline: March 14, 2016

7 Township Officials of Illinois Scholarship Must be a graduating Illinois high school senior with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. Must be a US citizen and resident of Illinois and plan to attend a university/college in Illinois. Must have a history of extracurricular activities that demonstrates a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities (student government, club officer, etc.) or a commitment to civic responsibility, social consciousness and a willingness to serve the community (community service projects, volunteer activities with local service agencies or charitable institutions, etc.). Application is available in the QHS guidance office. Amount: $1,500 (7) Deadline: March 1, 2016 The John S. Tignor Berrian School Scholarship Trust If you graduated from Berrian Elementary School, and are planning on attending college or trade school after graduation, we want you to apply. Applications available in the QHS Guidance Office. Deadline: April 1, 2016 Back 2 School Illinois Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI) will award a cash grant of $2,500 for the freshmen year of study to outstanding college-bound high school seniors, using leadership skills in both academic achievement as well as school and local community as the criteria to identify winners. Scholarships are provided by the Community Currency Exchange Association of Illinois and the Tufano Family. Applications are available in the QHS Guidance Office. Amount: $2,500 Deadline: April 1, 2016 Tim Breslin Memorial Scholarship The Chicago Wolves Hockey Team created this scholarship in loving memory of former player Tim Breslin. This scholarship is for junior high and high school students in Illinois. To apply for this scholarship, applicants must write an essay (500 words or less) that describes a hardship that they have overcome and how it has affected their life. Application available online and in the QHS Guidance Office. Deadline: March 4, 2016 Amount: $7,500

8 BigSun Scholarship The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. In order to do our part we are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in. The student must be a high school senior or be attending a post-secondary institute. Please remember to include your name and the name of the school that you are attending. How to Apply Please send us a short essay (500-1,000 words) answering the following questions: How did your participation in sports during your high school years influence you? Has your participation influenced your career goals? Has your participation influenced how you relate to your family? Amount: $500 Deadline: June 17, 2016 All essay submissions should be sent to: athleticawards@bigsunathletics.com Quincy Federation of Teachers-Local 809 Must be a graduating High School Senior in 2016 of an Employee of the Quincy Public Schools. A check for $750 will be made out to the recipient and the school they will attend. Scholarship will be awarded based on the following: essay answers; official transcripts verifying a B average or above (authorized by school official), and letters of recommendation from two references (other than relatives). Applicant finalists may be interviewed. Applications available in the QHS Guidance office. Deadline: March 18, 2016 Amount: $750 Becky-Swisher Crowe Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in memory of Becky Swisher Crowe who taught in the Quincy Public Schools from Becky was killed in an automobile accident on her 3way to school the morning of March 9, She taught at both Quincy Junior High School and Quincy Senior High School. The primary purpose of this fund is to provide one scholarship at an accredited two-year, four-year or community college for tuition, room and board, fees and/or books and related expenses for a Quincy Senior High graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in education. Minimum GPA of 3.0. Application available in the QHS Guidance Office. Typed essay required. Amount: $1,000 Deadline: March 15, 2016

9 The Kenneth and Eleanor Lohr Memorial Scholarship Fund The daughters of Kenneth and Eleanor Lohr established a scholarship to a graduate of Quincy Senior High intending to enter the field or majoring in pharmacy. The scholarship can be used for tuition, room and board, fees and/or books, and related expenses. Application available in the QHS Guidance office. Typed essay required Amount: $725 Deadline: March 15, 2016 QHS Class of 1957 Scholarship This scholarship commemorates the 50 th reunion of the QHS Class of The purpose of this scholarship is to express appreciation to parents, teachers, and citizens of Quincy who gave this class an excellent education, to honor and remember classmates of the Class of 1957 and their many contributions to society, and to encourage youth of today and tomorrow to make the most of their lives through education and service to others. Student must attend a four-year, degree granting, accredited institution full time. Not based on financial need. Minimum high school GPA of 3.5 is required. Application available in the QHS Guidance office. Typed essay required. Amount: $2,000 Deadline: March 4, 2016 Lee Pappas/Quincy Senior High School Athletic Scholarship The Lee Pappas/Quincy Senior High School Athletic Scholarship is offered to help support quality students who have not been able to secure full financial aid for their academic achievement. Student does not have to be a top athlete but a student of good character. Quincy Senior High School and the scholarship s community supporters care a great deal about this group of students. Each year the estimated average amount of the Lee Pappas/QHS Athletic Scholarship is approximately $700. The amount will be paid to the student and parent/guardian at the beginning of the second (2 nd ) semester to help cover tuition expenses. Proof of successful first semester grades from college/university must be brought in to QHS (Jolene Briscoe, Main Office) before money is issued. Application available in the QHS Guidance office. 10 LEE PAPPAS/QUINCY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP The Lee Pappas/Quincy Senior High School Scholarship is offered to help support quality students who have not been able to secure any other financial aid for their academic achievement. Student does not have to be a top student, but a student of good character and an excellent role model for Quincy Senior High School. Quincy Senior High School and the scholarship s community supporters care a great deal about this group of students. Each year an estimated average amount of the Lee Pappas/QHS Scholarship is approximately $ The amount will be paid to the student and parent/guardian at the beginning of the second (2 nd ) semester to help cover tuition expenses. 11 LOCAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE Requirements: Pillars for Excellence Full-Tuition Scholarship Competition Apply and be admitted to the College as a first-time freshman. Achieve a score of 26 on the ACT or 1170 on the SAT. Earn a 3.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale or rank in the top 10% of your graduating class. Competition Process: Visit and tour campus between October and January. Meet with the Pillars Scholar Committee. Submit an essay on a multi-faceted current event, assigned by the Pillars Scholar Committee. All competitors are automatically admitted into C-SC s Honors program and receive additional benefits with the Travel Study Grant program. Sign up online at culver.edu/pillars. For a complete listing of scholarships, go to culver.edu/value JOHN WOOD COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Scholarship Directory is available in the Guidance Office, Main Office and the QHS College and Career Center HANNIBAL LAGRANGE UNIVERSITY REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP The HLGU Regional High School Scholarship is available to current high school and homeschool seniors. To be eligible, the student must: be a senior attending one of the schools listed below, have above a 3.0 CGPA, and a minimum ACT score of 21. Residential students are eligible for a $10,000 scholarship annually while commuter students are eligible for a $6,500 annual scholarship. Scholarships awarded are limited to 50 per year and are renewable for four years based on an earned 2.5 CGPA. The HLGU Regional High School Scholarship may not be combined with any other institutional scholarship. Apply online at Deadline: May 1, 2016
