5 Benefits of LEDs Cost Saving Benefits The main advantage of using LED is the energy efficiency and associated financial saving. There are several areas where these savings can be achieved. 1. Electricity bill - LEDs use significantly less energy than traditional lamps; traditional incandescent lamps lose up to 95% of their power creating heat which is wasted. Therefore your electricity bill will be approximately 80% less than using traditional lamp types. Typically, the cost of lighting in a household is 20% of the overall electricity bill. 2. Replacement lamps The average life of an LED is 25,000 hours, compared to 1,000-2,000 hours for an incandescent lamp, 4,000 hours for a halogen lamp and 8,000 hours for a CFL. Therefore, LED will save money as lamps do not have to be replaced as frequently. 3. Maintenance costs For commercial premises, the cost of maintaining and replacing lamps can be expensive. LED lamps provide a significant reduction in maintenance costs over the product life. Although the initial cost of an LED lamp is higher than traditional lamps, these costs are recovered, in many cases <12 months. 6 Benefits of LEDs In the home Changing to an LED lamp, for example a GU10, from a halogen lamp will pay back in 20 months based on 8 hours use per day. This means that changing to LED lamps will save hundreds of pounds over their lifetime. This will not only benefit the user with lower electricity bills but the energy savings will further reduce the burden on the environment. Environmental Benefits There are a number of ways that using LEDs will have a positive impact on the environment: 1. Lighting accounts for between 20% and 60% of an electricity bill and therefore has a significant impact on the carbon footprint of a business or home. LEDs provide an excellent opportunity to significantly reduce carbon emissions and therefore help the environment. The Energy Savings Trust has stated that if everyone in the UK changes to LED lamps, enough energy will be saved to light 5 million homes. 2. LEDs provide a directional light source, which significantly reduces light pollution. 3. LED operates at low temperatures and so by reducing heat gain, there will be a noticeable decrease in the need for secondary temperature control systems such as air conditioning. 4. As LEDs are mercury free, they do not require a special re-cycling process. Health and Safety There are several reasons why LED lamps are advantageous from a health and safety perspective: 1. LED lamps are more durable than traditional lamps as they have no fragile parts. They are mercury free, so if the lamp breaks, there is no risk of contamination. 2. LED lamps generate very little heat and are therefore safer around the home. Because LED operates at lower temperatures, they will not cause scalding to the skin and the fire risk associated with overheated incandescent bulbs is not an issue with LEDs. 3. In an industrial environment, as LEDs are very strong and durable, they are used in areas which are more susceptible to heavy vibration (around machinery). LEDs are particularly efficient in low temperatures and can therefore be used in cold industrial environments. 4. LEDs generate minimal levels of UV (ultraviolet) or IR (infra red) radiation. Therefore they are very well suited for museums, art galleries and photo applications. Page 6
