8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LED LIGHTHING 1. WHAT DOES LED MEAN? LED means Light Emitting Diode. An LED, or light emitting diode, is a semiconductor device (diode) capable of emitting light when an electric current is passed through it. It has three components: the chip, the driver and the lens. The chip allows current to flow in one direction, the driver controls the current and the lens helps diffuse the light. 2. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SELS LED LIGHTING? Here are some of the many benefits of switching to LED: Immediate reduction in your electricity bill. By switching to LED, you will use 80-90% less lighting energy compared to traditional incandescent light bulbs. Less heat is generated because LED bulbs are very efficient converting electricity into light SELS LED products last a very long time, averaging over 50,000 hours. Typical incandescent bulbs generally last hours. The extremely long life of an LED bulb will virtually eliminate your maintenance costs. Our bulbs are virtually indestructible. Resistant to breakage and vibrations. Our products are unbreakable when dropped. SELS LED products don t contain mercury and other hazardous chemicals, unlike the Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) No UV rays are emitted. 3. ARE LEDs AFFECTED BY EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS? LEDs work well within the range of -40 F to 180 F, even during extreme conditions there is no delay or required warm up time for LEDs to function. 4. CAN SELS LEDs PRODUCTS CAN BE USED IN OUTSIDE LIGHTS? Yes, some of our products are designed with waterproof fittings, others need to be kept in a water tight fixture when used outside, please read our instruction manuals for specifications. 5. HOW EFFICIENT ARE LED BULBS COMPARED TO INCANDESCENT BULBS? The efficiency of LEDs is more than five times higher than comparable incandescent bulbs. This equates to LED bulbs using only 20% of the amount of electricity used by incandescents to produce the same amount of light. 6. WHY SHOULD I SWITCH TO LED LIGHTS RATHER THAN CFL BULBS? First, our bulbs and tubes are 40-50% more efficient than Compact Fluorescent or CFL bulbs. Second, Our LED products do not contain mercury or any other hazardous materials, so you don t have to worry about special disposal procedures or having a negative impact on the environment. CFL bulbs contain mercury, which is hazardous to the environment and to your family. Third, there is no warm up period, as there is with all CFL bulbs. Our LED products have an Instant ON and Instant OFF. 7. ITS POSSIBLE TO REPLACE ALL THE TRADITIONAL LIGHTS LIKE, HALOGEN, CFL, HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM, WITH LED LIGHTS? 9 8. WHAT IS THE COLOR OF THE LIGHT EMITTED FROM SELS LED PRODUCTS? We have a variety of colors, (as defined by the Kelvin Scale) but we chose the most popular colors for home and business use. The E26 is the standard 120 Volt base. The E27 is the European variant and is rated 220 Volts. An E26 base measures 26 mm, and an E27 measures 27 mm diameter. However an E26 can fit in a E27 base and vice versa without a problem, and there is no problem with the voltage because all SELS LED products are universal line voltage, which means that they all work within the range of Volts. 10. HOW LONG DO LEDs LAST COMPARED TO OTHER LIGHTING PRODUCTS? Its important to know that SELS LED products don t burn out like incandescent bulbs or other lighting technology. The lighting industry has established that the useful life of an LED ends when only 70% of its initial light output is emitted. Our high quality LEDs, normally last over 35,000 hours. The specifications sheet or the packaging will indicate if the particular product is dimmable or not. 12. WHAT SIZES DO SELS LED BULBS COME IN? ARE THEY GOING TO FIT MY CURRENT LIGHTING FIXTURE? In most cases our bulbs are the same size as the bulbs they replace, if not they are slightly smaller. 13. HOW DO I COMPARE MY CURRENT LIGHTING WITH LED LIGHTING SO I CAN CHOOSE THE RIGHT SELECTION FOR MY NEEDS? Until recently, the brightness of a bulb was generally referred to in terms of its wattage, or the amount of power that the bulb uses (or energy it consumes). Because of the disparity between incandescent and LED technologies, we have to change our language a bit in order to account for progress. When referring to brightness, we now refer to lumens. However, when comparing LEDs with incandescent, there is no easy mode of comparison because the typical incandescent projects light 360 degrees everywhere, not just where you need it. Because LED lights are directional, they focus all the light they generate exactly where you want it, and nowhere that you don t. This means that you can have what appears to be brighter, more directional lighting with LEDs than you can with incandescents. 14. WHAT IS A LUMEN? Lumen means the amount of light emitted from light source. The lumen can be thought of as a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted. For example, a standard 60 Watt incandescent bulb emits about lumens. A comparable SELS LED light emits 810 lumens. 15. WHY ARE SELS LED PRODUCTS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT? SELS LEDs are more energy-efficient because most of the energy that LEDs consume is used to produce visible light, rather than light and heat. SELS LED lighting products are among some of the most efficient lighting products available. Most of our products have a luminous efficacy over 90Lm per watt. 16. WHAT DOES THE TERM LUMINOUS EFFICACY MEAN? Luminous efficacy refers to how well a light source produces visible light. The amount of light that a source produce is measured in lumens, and efficacy is expressed in lumens per watt (lm/w). The more efficient the source producing light, the higher efficacy. 17. WHAT KIND OF GUARANTEE DO SELS PRODUCTS COME WITH? Most of our products come with either 3 or 5 years manufacturer warranty. Please check the packaging of your product for specific guarantees.
