1 The Stavanger Region Gives you Energy!
2 Stavanger, Norway as host for your next Association Meeting Stavanger, February 15, 2016 The Stavanger Region Convention Bureau is the official visitor and marketing bureau of the city of Stavanger, and neighboring municipalities. As the Director of Tourism in the Stavanger region, I wish to invite you to convene your meeting in the Stavanger region, Norway. Stavanger was founded on the North Sea Coast in the early 12 th Century, and has for centuries been a centre for trade, shipping and business. For almost 50 years the town has been an international hub for the North Sea Energy industry. The Stavanger region is also known for agriculture, centers of research and finance, and the arts. Today inhabitants live in Stavanger, although the greater region counts over inhabitants. Stavanger has equally been an important part of the branding of the Norwegian fjords as an international icon and destination, known worldwide. Stavanger is an established convention destination, with a wide range of recent hosted events, meetings and exhibitions. The meeting facilities are modern and up to date, offering great possibilities. Your Norwegian hosts are acquainted with the stringent requirements involved in organizing international conventions for high demanding, international delegates and partners. Nothing is left by chance to guarantee you a successful event. As the convention bureau we will happily assist you with services, free of charge: Bidding process Venue finding assistance Supplier finding assistance Suggestions for social programme Co-ordination of site-visits and inspections when needed Relevant city promotional material to delegates It is in our interest that your event will be a success, and we will do our best to assist you before and during the conference. Kind regards, Elisabeth Saupstad Director of Tourism Region Stavanger
3 Norway is a land for nature lovers, with breathtaking fjords and glaciers, summer s midnight sun and a sparsely populated wilderness. The Kingdom of Norway is a very long and very narrow country situated far to the north in the western corner of Europe. The distance from south to north, equals that from Oslo to Rome (1 770 km), crossing he Polar Circle at about 2/3 of the length. Norway boast one of the longest coastlines in the world ( km), and its most outstanding feature being the fjords, which have twice (2006 & 2009) been ranked as the most celebrated and iconic travel destination by National Geographic. Welcome to Norway! Stavanger The country has evolved from a quiet agrarian society to a dynamic, high-tech country with a prominent international position. In addition to be one of the largest oil exporters, it is also regarded as being amongst the leaders in a wide range of industries including shipping, aquaculture, hydropower, energy and telecommunications. More recently, tourism has evolved as one of Norway s fastest growing industries. The Norwegian business sector works to develop cost-effective, environmentally-sound and technologicallyadvanced solutions, to increase industrial productivity and enhance efficiency. Facts about Norway System of government: Constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy Head of government: Prime Minister Erna Solberg Area: 385,155 square kilometres Population: inhabitants (as of 1 June 2015) Capital city: Oslo Languages: Norwegian bokmål, Norwegian nynorsk and Sami Religion: Church of Norway (Protestant Christianity) Currency: Norwegian kroner (NOK) 1 krone = 100 øre Time zone: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +1 hour National day: 17 May
4 About Stavanger Exotic and exciting venue for adventures Stavanger, is located on the Southwestern coast of Norway and is the gateway to the Norwegian Fjords, offering some of the most majestic and spectacular scenery in the world. Surrounded by mountains, beaches and water, the city is truly a unique destination for meetings, events and conferences. Stavanger s intimate and mostly pedestrian city centre, with its old town and medieval harbour makes for a charming atmosphere. Spectacular scenery of Fjord Norway The landscape of the region is a land of contrasts. The vast North Sea and its 70 kilometres of white sandy beaches along the coast of Jæren is a contrast to the breath-taking fjords with narrow passages between tall, extremely steep mountainsides. On your visit, get ready to encounter one of Norway s most imposing landmarks: The Pulpit Rock. Stavanger Energy Capital and Smart City The Stavanger region is the energy capital of Europe and holds the European status as smart city lighthouse among nine other cities in Europe. Stavanger is proud to be one of three cities in the EU Triangulum project, which is set to demonstrate, disseminate and replicate solutions and frameworks for Europe s future smart cities. For the Stavanger region the Triangulum project will contribute to: Lowering emission by introducing equipment and infrastructure for electric mobility Improve the quality of public transportation and thus increase its competitiveness compared to individual motor car traffic Smarter houses including decision support, energy control, safety and comfort Lowering energy consumptions both in dwellings and public buildings Renewable energy will cover 75% of the heating requirement Meaningful citizen involvement in everyday life
