3 culture history Turku dates back to the 13 th century, when it became the capital of Swedish-occupied Finland. Directly across from the Port, on the edge of the Aura River stands Turku Castle, a testament to the power that Turku once held. Self or guided tours of the castle and its antiques are on offer, and period performances of various sorts can be arranged. The Aura River is at the heart of Turku. It s where the city began to develop in the early 1200s. The river attracted settlement, settlement attracted trade and from trade the port and later the city were formed. A stroll along the banks of the Aura leads to Turku s other chief landmark, the 700-year old Turku Cathedral. Rebuilt after the great fire of 1827, it is considered the most important architectural structure in Finland, an imposing centrepiece in the historical heart of the city. Your landing may coincide with one of many music festivals and concerts that take place during the summer months. Choose from rock, baroque, classical and operatic performances. In July, jugglers, actors and merchants all vie for attention at the Medieval Market. Turku s historic downtown, a brisk walk from the Port and nestled around the Aura River, is replete with fine shopping, museums and galleries, pubs and bars as well as casual and fine dining opportunities.

5 The Turku Archipelago has rightfully been called the most beautiful in the world. The interaction of light and sound among the islands has a special quality that makes for lasting impressions. The thousands of small islands and atolls that make up the Turku Archipelago are a nature lover s paradise. Short boat trips depart regularly from the Aura riverside. Guided fishing excursions are also popular, as the waters of the Archipelago are teeming with pike, perch, sea trout and salmon even close to the Aura River mouth. For those in search of total relaxation, a short bus ride leads to the quiet, sandy beaches on the island of Ruissalo, opposite the harbour. The island is home to many large 19th century wooden villas, built as summer residences by wealthy Turku families. Some now house art galleries and cafés. A walk round the nearby botanical gardens is an ideal way to get a bit of exercise, and at the end of the day a small ferry that runs regularly from the island makes for a pleasant return to the city.

The Forum Marinum maritime museum in the centre of Turku displays Middle Age shipbuilding and repair techniques. Nearby, the Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is an outdoor centre where visitors travel back in time 200 years and a must-see for collectors of authentic handicrafts, including much sought-after Finnish blown glass. It s also the only part of the city to completely escape the great fire of Naantali Fifteen kilometres to the west of Turku lays Naantali, a small holiday town spanning both the island of Luonnonmaa and the Finnish mainland. A short ferry ride to Naantali opens up a world of enjoyment, beginning with the Naantali Spa Hotel. The Spa is the largest in Scandinavia and the only Nordic member of the Royal Spas of Europe affiliation. Book early, as summer season is extremely busy! Naantali s popularity as a tourist venue is highlighted by its status as the official summer residence of the President of Finland, as well as the location of the medieval convent church of Naantali. Moominworld, one of the most popular theme parks of Northern Europe, lives here, making Naantali a top spot for children and families. The town s atmosphere is a blend of the charm of the Turku Archipelago, the remnants of history and the idyllic present day. Arts and music are essential part of Naantali, as is the sea, with yachts sailing right to the very heart of the Old Town.
