2 THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING FRAYER MODEL TO IMPROVE STUDENTS VOCABULARY MASTERY ON THE SEVENTH GRADE AT SMP N 33 PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013 By Winda Retnaningtias Abstract This final project is experimental research. The purpose of the study is to know whether using Frayer Model is effective to improve students vocabulary mastery for students of Junior High School or not. The researcher using multiple choice tests which consist of 20 questions. The samples of this study are two classes. The researcher uses Purposive sampling. To collect the data, the researcher used test as an instrument. There were pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is conducted before the researcher gives a treatment. Post-test is conducted after the researcher gives a treatment. This research is a quantitative research. The mean score of control group is The mean score of experimental group is The result of t-value is Based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is The computation shows that t-value is higher than t- table that is 3.22> So the model is effective. (Keywords: vocabulary, Frayer Model, students vocabulary, Junior High School) A. Introduction Vocabulary as a one of the important elements should be mastered. It has a very important role in learning a language including English because vocabulary is the total number of words that make up a language. Hornby (2000:1331). Many students especially at the seventh grade of Junior High School are still unable or difficult to understand the meaning of words in the passage or text; they limited vocabulary to meaning a text. The researcher intends to study one of model that is Frayer Model. By using it, the students are expected to learn vocabulary easily and interestingly.

3 B. Method This study is experimental study. In this research, the researcher chooses SMP N 33 Purworejo which is located on Jalan Tentara Pelajar No 92, Purworejo. The object is the seventh grade at SMP N 33 Purworejo, especially VII A class and VII B class. Time of the research is 7 th until 17 th November The total of the population is 220 students. The researcher uses Purposive sampling. This research is a quantitative research. There are two kinds of statistics used to analyze the data in the research ; descriptive analysis (mean, mode, median, standard deviation) and inferential analysis (test of normality, test of homogeneity, and test of hypothesis). The instrument for collecting the data, the researcher used pretest and posttest. This research used two groups which involve a group of students who belong to experimental group and students who belong to the control group. The difference between experimental group and control group is in treatment. The experimental group is given a material using Frayer Model, and the control group is given a material with conventional method. C. Research Finding Students Achievement of Control Group and Experimental Group. The mean of experimental group is and the standard deviation of it is The mean is included in the interval of 70 to 79. It means that the

4 students of experimental group of the seventh grade students at SMP N33 Purworejo have good result on their vocabulary mastery. From the previous analysis, it shows that with the number of samples (N 1 = 31 and N 2 = 31) and the level of significance is 5%, the result of the computation of t-value is Based on the value in the t-table for N 1 =31 and N 2 = 31 and the significance level is 5%, the value of t-table is The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 3.22> So, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that there is significant effective to improve students vocabulary mastery on the seventh grade at SMPN 33 Purworejo in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. After computing t-test separated variance, and after knowing that the hypothesis is accepted, the theory meets the fact in this case. Then, from the computation in the previous section; the researcher concludes that there is significant effective of using Frayer Model to improve students vocabulary mastery of using Frayer Model on the seventh grade at SMP N 33 Purworejo in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. D. Conclusion and suggestion Based on the analysis of the data, testing of the hypothesis and the discussion, the conclusion can be drawn as follows; there is an effectiveness using Frayer Model to improve students vocabulary mastery on the seventh grade at SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013, since the mean score of experimental group is higher than the mean score of control group (75.48>67.74). In addition, the result of t-value is It shows that t-value is higher than t-table (3.22>2.000). It means that technique used by the researcher is an effective to improve students vocabulary mastery on the seventh grade students at SMP N 33 Purworejo.

5 In this final section, the researcher would like to present some suggestion for the teacher, the students, and other researchers. For the teachers, it is hoped that the teachers can apply the learning method using Frayer Model in the teaching learning process as the way to train among the students. The students can be more interested in learning English, especially using Frayer Model.
