1 General Business 1 Academic Department: General Business Strategic Plan Results & Responses Degree BBA: General Business Student Learning Outcome 1 Proficiency of the students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree is sought in the nine areas that compose generally-accepted BBA component studies. The nine areas are: 1. Accounting 2. Economics 3. Management 4. Quantitative Business Analysis 5. Finance 6. Marketing 7. Legal and Social Environment 8. Information Systems 9. International Issues Faculty members in the Division of Business work to provide BBA students with courses and instruction providing students with increased competence. The students will learn how to function in various areas of business relating to the nine areas identified above. Method of Assessment 1 The BBA students take part in pre- and post-testing conducted by the Education Testing Service s Major Field Test in Business (MFTB), which addresses each of the nine foundational degree areas. ETS reported that, "Colleges and universities use the Major Field Tests to measure student academic achievement and growth and to assess the educational outcomes of their major programs. In addition, academic departments use the Major Field Tests to evaluate their curricula and to measure progress of their students. The tests also provide students with an assessment of their own level of achievement within a field of study compared to that of students in their program and to national comparative data"(p. 1). Criteria for Success The Division of Business goal is for the graduates to show individual improvement from working through the courses composing the BBA, and for the students to show proficiency in each of the nine areas. Individual scores and composite scores will provide benchmarking opportunities with available ETS comparative data Results and Response The concentration courses for the General Business Concentration cannot be assessed. This concentration permits students to take 18 semester hours in any other division. The results for the MFT, and pre-post tests are below:

3 General Business Figure #2: MFT Results by Location: The problems with sub-categories #4 and #7 in the MFT results will be addressed in curriculum changes that are planned for The tentative plan includes the addition of a Business Law course, which addressed the low scores in sub-category #7 of the MFT. The business division will also review the possibility of offering two courses to replace BUS 354 Business Analysis. Prior to the curriculum changes in 2005, there were two courses. One course was a business statistic course and the other a quantitative analysis class. BUS 354 replaced both those courses. During the curriculum revisions in 2005, the business law course was eliminated. The two problem areas in the MFT results will be studied and the curriculum will be revised to improve in these areas Results and Response The concentration courses for the General Business Concentration cannot be assessed. This concentration permits students to take 18 semester hours in any other division. The MFT scores dropped during this reporting period. In the 9 sub-categories, the average drop was over 8 points. The largest drop of 14 points is in sub-category # 5, Finance. There were also significant decreases in sub-categories 3, Management, and #6, Marketing.

4 General Business 4 There are several variables to consider regarding the lower MFT scores: 1. The business division has incorporated new courses in the curriculum to address the problems previously reported for the academic year. However, the courses were approved this year, and the courses will be offered in The number of adjunct faculty members was greatly increased. The adjuncts taught course in the most problematic areas, as identified above. 3. The student population/sat scores of this graduating class. 4. No incentive for students to complete the MFT to the best of their ability. The business division will include a grading component in BUS 453, Strategic Management (where the post- MFT is administered) as an incentive for students to excel on the MFT. Sample exams geared toward the 9 sub-categories of the MFT will be created and implemented by spring In response to the problems reported last year with sub-category #4, Quantitative Analysis, BUS 335, Production and Operations Management (which is now BUS 434) was revised and the quantitative component expanded. In response to the problems with sub-category #7. Legal and Social Environment, BUS 351, Business Law was added to the core requirements for the BBA degree. A new elective was also added, BUS 340, Business Ethics.
