1 Experiencing health care in a poor resourced country - Preparing, coaching and supervising students 8-10th of October 2014 Oslo, Norway Capacity building seminar This capacity building workshop will provide the opportunity to explore and discuss concepts on coaching and supervising students during the whole process of practice in poor resourced countries. Participants will have the opportunity to develop competences to coach students in resource poor countries. The workshops are coached by different experts in the field of working with students and health professionals in poor resourced countries. During the workshop we ask input of participants through their own experiences with students. Keywords: paradigm shift, briefing and debriefing, coaching and supervising styles, emotional support, procedures for Crisis Management, Critical incidents and cultural relativism, examples of good practice. 2 levels: basic and advanced level (parallel workshop)

2 Cohehre Academy The Cohehre Academy is one of the activities within the Cohehre consortium. The aim of the Academy is to enhance international, interdisciplinary, interprofessional cooperation and capacity building within health education among the members institutions. The Academy acts as a platform that initiates, supports and coordinates different activities. It offers opportunities to create, stimulate, found and intensify networking of partner institutions and to develop joint initiatives. For further information on this Seminar, please contact: filip.dejonckheere@arteveldehs.be madalena.silva@ess.ips.pt Aims of the workshop LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: Promote awareness of peer teachers and students, of the required changes in paradigms, for working in poor resourced countries; Facilitate and develop in their students inter cultural and inter professional skills, for working in a non European environment; Facilitate the qualitative preparation and orientation for students who will be having their clinical practice in poor resourced countries; Provide quality supervision and coaching of students placed in poor resourced countries; Provide emotional support to students who have their clinical practice in poor resourced countries (before, during and upon arrival) Facilitate the development of skills and strategies in students, to act adequately during and after critical incidents and crisis Discuss ideas and strategies with a wider group of colleagues, who are sending students to poor resourced countries, with regards to the development of culturally competent health care and education Practical information on the workshop: Madalena Silva madalena.silva@ess.ips.pt Outcome of the workshop Participants will arrive on Wednesday 8th of October. Getting acquainted upon arrival The following days will be spent considering various aspects of supervising and coaching students. Closing Friday 10th of October, 15.00: Closing and evaluation - relation to learning outcomes defined. The input of participants is essential to create an interactive, experience based program. A wide variety of techniques will be used by the facilitators to enable participants to meet the aims of the workshop. Content of the workshop Facilitating the Development of inter cultural competences Preparation of students: Going on exchange to low in come countries, and to what extent do we depict reality Preparation phase: student selection; preparatory activities & procedures Briefing: language preparation; insurance; practical issues Preparation on health care issues Supervision and coaching at a distance Coaching Students: Digital stories instead of making reports Paradigm shift for students and teachers Procedures for Crisis Management Discussion and sharing good practices Crisis Management and Debriefing: Critical incidents and cultural relativism Debriefing: Critical Issues - Sharing good practices Emotional support for students after traumatic experiences Student practice Mobility experiences seen in a North- South perspective

He is also responsible for international recruitment and coaching of aidworkers andcurrently involved with Handicap International in Belgium, which is an independent, international, non-governmental aid organisation working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. They are mainly known for its fight against landmines and clustermunition and for its help to the victims of those weapons. Nowadays, Handicap International has expanded its activities to helping people with a different kind of handicap and the most vulnerable in over 60 countries worldwide.
