Ms. Marijean Harmonis Office: C3-1I Telephone mharmonis@ccp.edu OA110 Course Description: Development of correct touch keyboarding techniques on the computer keyboard. Speed development to 25 words a minute. Introduction to business correspondence including basic computer operations and elementary word processing functions, using Microsoft Word 2010, for creating, saving, retrieving, and printing of documents. We will key business letters, personal business letters, envelopes, business reports, academic reports, memos, tables, and a personal resume. Textbook, Software, and Hardware: KIT 1 GREGG Lessons 1-60, College Document Processing, 11 th Edition, Ober, Johnson, and Zimmerly. For use with the Internet-ready McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2011, New York. This Kit includes a registration code which permits you to enter the GDP program. If purchasing a used textbook, you need to also purchase a registration code. The ISBN No. for Kit 1 is You will need Microsoft Word 2010 for this course. You will take your final exam on Microsoft Word This software will only operate on PC computers not Mac. THIS IS AN ONLINE COURSE AND YOU WILL, THEREFORE, BE USING WEBSTUDY TO OBTAIN ALL OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS, HANDOUTS, AND COMMUNICATIONS WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR. You will use the WebStudy to communicate with your professor not the MyCCP . Your alphabet, numbers and symbols will automatically be uploaded to the GDP web site at When you start projects, in Lesson 25, however, additional steps will be necessary for you to upload your keyboarding lessons to the GDP web site and these steps will be discussed at that time. Please read all of your instructions and bulletins carefully several times so that you know exactly what to do. a. Access to WebStudy is available the first day of class.
2 b. To get to Webstudy and your assignments, go to the CCP website at c. Click on Quick links on the left of your screen. d. Press the down arrow and select Distance Education and click on go. e. Click on the WebStudy Login. f. When you get to the screen where you login, click on Favorites because you will be returning here each week. Type in your User Name g. Type in your Password and click on the right directional arrow. You will copy and paste this WebStudy Login page for part of your first week s assignment and upload it to the correct link in WebStudy. (This is the only assignment to be uploaded to WebStudy. I will see your other work on the GDP website. h. Upper right, click on Select a Course i. Click on OA 110 Prof. Keyboarding (Fall ) j. Click on the Timeline Tab on the right side of your screen you will see your assignments and their due dates. 2. At-Home Software: Microsoft Word 2010 WORDPAD IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. You will be tested in Word 2010 and Windows 7, which is the operating system. Other Supplies: Flash or Jump drive on which to store your completed project documents for upload. TIPS: 1. The program does not save partial exercises; therefore, complete your exercise and then leave the program. 2. You may leave the program at any time by pressing the X next to Close. 3. The more frequently you practice, the better you will be, and the faster you will learn. Before saving projects to your jump or flash drive, check under My Computer to see what letter it is assigned. The GDP Web Site and Course Grade Calculation *All of your keyboarding lessons (letters of the alphabet, numbers, and symbols) will be on the web site as you complete your assigned lessons and exercises. I will be going to the same web site to see your work and to grade it. You will receive a grade for each of these lessons. (Check for your weekly keyboarding grade.) First click on My GDP, click on A, click on Details, and read under General Comment). These keyboarding lessons constitute 40 percent (40%) of your grade and will determine your mid-semester grade. 2
3 Requirements: Homework assignments sent weekly and on time are graded as follows: GRADING OF ALPHA, NUMERIC, AND SYMBOL LESSONS POINTS SUBJECT MATTER 100 points Assignment and timings completed by due date or before (Check WebStudy for due dates.) and within textbook speed goal or higher but no more than one error a minute. Only 2 attempts. 85 points Assignment completed by due date; timings completed within textbook goals for speed range and errors. Only 2 attempts. 75 points Assignment and timings completed by due date or before and not completed within speed and accuracy goals of textbook. Only 2 attempts. 60 points Partially completed assignment. Timings incomplete. (Excessive number of errors in drills.) 70 points Completed assignment (as stated above) one day* 1 late. Only 2 attempts. Speed and accuracy textbook goals met. 50 points Completed assignment (as stated above) 2 days late. Only 2 attempts. Speed and accuracy textbook goals met. 0 points Completed assignment more than two days late When we start the second portion of the course project work also worth 40 percent (40%) of your grade, you will upload your projects from your flash drive to the GDP web site, score your documents and correct any typographical errors or formatting errors. The final exam, worth 20 percent of your grade (20%) will be very comprehensive, testing you on all document preparation that you have learned. These three components: keyboarding lessons, project assignments, and the final exam will be averaged together with their perspective percents, and this will determine your final grade for the course. When observing your work on the GDP web site, you will see the following color codes used to determine mistakes made: Red for typographical errors; Green for omitted words; and Blue for added words. The same colors will apply to formatting errors when you start your projects blue for unneeded formatting added, and green for formatting omitted. 1 One day means one day late not a week later. 3
4 General Objectives: 1. To familiarize the student with the keyboard using the touch method. 2. To begin development of mastery of the keyboard. 3. To develop attitudes and work habits which will insure successful experiences in keyboarding in both personal applications and office situations. 4. To learn how to use Microsoft Word 2007 to type letters, envelopes, reports, memos, , tables, and résumés. Specific Objectives: 1. To key by touch--not looking at fingers as you type. 2. To key by touch the alphabetic keyboard, numbers, symbols and the tab key. 3. To key at a minimum speed of 25gross words a minute (GWAM) with a high degree of accuracy. 4. To learn how to use the new graphic interface of Word To learn to use WORD to horizontally center, to bold, to italicize, to underline, and to correct. 6. To learn to use WORD to prepare business reports and academic reports with and without Proofreaders Marks. 7. To learn proper formatting techniques and employ them for business reports and academic reports. 8. To learn proper formatting of business letters, personal business letters, and envelopes. 9. To learn to use WORD to key business letters, personal business letters, and envelopes (No. 10). 10. To learn proper formatting techniques and employ them for business letters, personal business letters and envelopes. 11. To learn proper formatting techniques and employ them for memos, tables and résumés. 12. To learn to use WORD to key memos, tables, and résumés. ATTENDANCE POLICY If you are absent from class (this means that your assignment for the week has not been uploaded to the GDP web site) for more than 3 weeks, you will be dropped from this course. Please remember that your assignments are due on Sundays, weekly, no later than 7 p.m. If you are late, points are deducted from your assignment grade. Please refer to grading for further details. 4
5 Course Outline WEEKS SUBJECT MATTER 1-5 Introduction of Alphabetic Keyboard Numbers/Symbols, Weekly Timed Writings , Block Style Business Letters Memo, Personal Business Letter, Block Business Letter, Envelopes, Business Reports Academic Reports, Tables, Résumés 15 Final Exam Supplies Notebook; pencil/pen; highlighter pen; No.10 Envelopes. Requirements: *All assignments must be completed or you will not pass this course. You are allowed to make mistakes. It is better to make a mistake than it is to look at your keys. If you are making many mistakes, repeat the exercises. There is no penalty for repeating the exercises. However, there are penalties for submitting your work late. Assignments submitted more than 2 days after the due date will be graded a zero. (Please note the above chart for grading.) Repeated late assignments will result in the student being dropped from the course. The more you practice correctly, the faster you will learn where the keys are without looking. (This is your first goal.) Project Grading Each project will be graded on 100 points Projects must be completed and on time. One day late and the project will drop to a C two days late and the project will drop to a D if it has been completed correctly. A zero will be received if your assignment is more than two days late. Point Deduction Error Type -5 points Each typographical error -10 points Each formatting error 1. Daily practice on keyboard lesson exercises and after the keyboard is covered on continuing lesson exercises is essential if you are to acquire a high skill level. 2. It is of the utmost importance that the entire course be completed including the final examination. 5
6 OA110 GRADING SCALE A = B = C = D = F = Below 60 Timed Writings: Optional 3-minute timed writing grading You must pass at least three 3-minute timed writings in order to obtain these extra points. Grade 3 Minute TIMED WRITING GWAM* Errors Allowed Extra Points Earned A 26-C 40 or more 5 5 B 28-C C 32-C D 34-C C 3 38-C 3 46-C 3 42-C 3 Additional 3-minute or 5 minute timings are available in your textbook and may be taken. The error goals are listed next to the timing. It is necessary for all timed writings assigned to be taken. However, these timings do not count against your grade. They count towards increasing your grade an excellent way of adding up to 5 points to your final grade as indicated by the above chart. Your final grade can be increased by as much as one letter grade with the addition of these extra timed writing points. Final Assessment: Alphabetic and Numeric Keyboard Projects Final Exam 40% of final grade 40% of final grade 20% of final grade Final Examination Part I Objective test on lessons covered-- 20% of Final Grade Part II Production Business Letter, Personal Business Letter, Rough-draft Copy of letters and reports, memo and table 80% of the Final Examination grade 6
7 TO STUDENTS RECEIVING TITLE IV FINANCIAL AID FUNDS Effective Fall 2000, students who receive Title IV financial aid funds and who withdraw from ALL their classes before completion of 60% of the term, i.e., the 10th week (or its equivalent for summer terms) may be required to return all or a portion of their financial aid award. If it is determined that funds must be returned to the financial aid programs, students must make satisfactory payment arrangements within 45 days of notification or they become ineligible for further financial aid funding.
