5 What's New In This Release Block scheduling lets teachers now choose the days of the week that students work on each course so that schoolwork is customized to best fit your homeschooling schedule. For example, your student currently has five courses. You would like two of the courses to have schoolwork scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays only and three of the courses to have schoolwork scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. Or, let's say you want to plan that on Fridays, you and your students go to Co-op or on field trips and you do not want your students to get behind in their schoolwork. No problem! You can easily reschedule schoolwork to specific school days to best fit your homeschooling schedule. Block scheduling is available when assigning new courses to students and when rescheduling existing courses for students. Monarch automatically regenerates due dates evenly over available school days. How to set up block scheduling for your students Monarch provides several ways to set up block scheduling for your students. Note Monarch requires a minimum of three (3) working school days for course scheduling. This means your Start and End dates for a course must include at least three working school days. 1. When assigning courses to students, you can choose the working schooldays (example B) for one or more courses. See "Assign courses to students" on page Two new links - Reschedule Work and Reschedule Courses - were added to your Dashboard to help you easily set up block scheduling for existing courses. 6 What's New In This Release When selecting block scheduling for existing courses, you select the student and then for each course, you select the working schooldays. 3. You can use the Assigned Work page to set up block scheduling for one course or all courses for a student. 9 Let's Get Started Welcome to Monarch! Monarch is an innovative way to help you and your student(s) succeed. Monarch is perfect for your on-the-go schedule because the Monarch Christian homeschool curriculum is accessible online around the clock. This benefit gives you and your student(s) the flexibility of doing schoolwork on a schedule that works best for you and your students. You received an from the Monarch Team with your Teacher login information which included your Username and Password. Do NOT share this information with your student! As a Teacher, you have a different Monarch application than a student as well as special administration permissions that allow you to manage your homeschool settings, assign and unassign courses, reschedule courses, create custom projects for students, see answers to questions, grade students' work, and more. Log in and log out To log in to Monarch: 1. Click the URL link provided in the Enter the Username and Password the Monarch Team gave you. 3. Click the Sign In button. If you have forgotten your password, click the Forgot Password link. Enter your username or address associated with your account and a new password will be ed to you. 10 Dashboard page features and functions The first time you log in you see the End User License Agreement (EULA). Read through the agreement and click the I Agree button at the bottom to continue. To log out: When you are finished using Monarch, it is recommended that you click the Logout button (located at the far right of the main nav bar) to log out of the application. Dashboard page features and functions The page that you see every time you log in is the Home > Dashboard page. Think of the Dashboard as a control panel where you can easily control and manage your students and their curriculum, set up your school, get Help and provide feedback on Monarch features and functionality, establish school and non-school days on your school calendar, and more. Let's take a quick look at your first Dashboard so that you can quickly get your student(s) set up and learning! Later sections in this guide contain in-depth information about all the features and functions on the Dashboard. Note After you set up your curriculum and students, your Dashboard has minor changes. See "Changes to your Dashboard after curriculum and students are set up" on the facing page. Across the top of your Dashboard you see a bar that contains the Monarch logo on the left and a series of buttons on the right. This main navigation bar (nav bar) (example A) is always available as a navigation tool. 8 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

11 Changes to your Dashboard after curriculum and students are set up Most of the buttons on the main nav bar have a corresponding function box on the Dashboard page. The Home button returns you to your Dashboard. The Lesson Plan button takes you directly to the Assigned Work page for your students. The Lesson Plan function box on the Dashboard page contains the Calendar link and after you have set up your students, lists each student along with function links for each student. See "Changes to your Dashboard after curriculum and students are set up" below. The Messages button opens to your Inbox where you can read any messages sent by your student(s) or send them a message. The Messages function box on the Dashboard page contains the last five messages you've received and contains links to open your Inbox and easily create a new message. See "Read and Send Messages" on page 73. The Application function box does not have a corresponding button on the main nav bar. This function box contains the links to let you change your Monarch password, personal information, and theme. The Setup button takes you to the various school administration functions, such as modifying school-level assignment settings, setting up students, including modifying their individual settings, setting up curriculum, and managing your Monarch subscriptions. Setup has the same functions as the Administration function box on the Dashboard page. See "Administration tasks overview" on page 23. The Reports button opens to the available reports that you can run for your students. The Reports function box on the Dashboard page contains links to each report type so that you can quickly run that type of report for your students. See "Run Reports" on page 75. The Help button takes you to the page where you can access a copy of this guide, the Student Guide, links to the FREE Monarch Training Webinar, all of our contact information and a link to send us Feedback. See "Get Help and Access Other Resources" on page 79. The function toolbar (example B) located beneath the main nav bar is another type of toolbar. The tools (buttons) you see on this bar change based on your top-level tool selection on the main nav bar. Changes to your Dashboard after curriculum and students are set up After you have set up your curriculum and students and assigned courses to students, your Dashboard now has your students listed in the Lesson Plan function box as shown here. 12 Add students to your school And, in the Administration function box, the Reschedule Courses link appears as shown here. Add students to your school One of the first things you need to do is set up your student(s) in Monarch. When you set up a student, you provide them a Monarch username and password so that they can log in to the Monarch Student application. 1. On the Dashboard, click the add your students link, or on the main nav bar, click Setup, and then on the toolbar below, click the Student Setup tool. 10 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

13 Add students to your school The Student Setup page appears. 2. To add your first student, do the following in the Create Student fields: a. Enter student s First Name. b. Enter student s Last Name. c. Enter a unique Username that will not be used by any other of your Monarch users. If it is not unique to the student, you are messaged that the username is already in use. d. Enter a Password that is 6-12 characters long, including a minimum of one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one number. For example: Driv3r e. VerifyPassword by entering it again. f. 14 Assign courses to students Once you add your first student, the Student Setup page looks like the example A. Follow steps 2 a f to continue adding students. Assign courses to students After you have set up your student(s), you need to assign the curriculum (courses) to your student(s). You select start and end dates for courses or you can use a school year (see "Manage school years" on page 27.) When assigning a course, you also select the days of the week that the student should work on each course. Note When assigning a course, the chosen date range (begin and end dates) must be a minimum of three school days and days of the week combination should include school days. For more information about how to manage school and non-school days on your school calendar, see "Manage your school and non-school days" on page 43. Assigning courses to students creates the student lesson plans. 1. To assign curriculum to your first student, on the toolbar, click the Curriculum Setup tool to the right of Student Setup tool. A page similar to the one below appears the first time when no curriculum has been assigned. 12 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

15 Assign courses to students Note The page shown above only appears the first time when you have just set up your student(s) and no courses have been assigned. After one course is assigned to a student, you can use the Setup > Curriculum Setup > Subscriptions page or the Dashboard, Administration function box, Subscriptions link to assign courses. 2. Click the click here link to continue. The page you see next varies based on the type of subscription you purchased. In the example below, a Family Yearly Subscription was purchased. If you also have a Course Subscription for electives, a box appears below the Family Yearly Subscription box where you can assign those courses as well. You see only the courses your subscription(s) cover. 3. Click the Select Students button to show your students. 4. Click the check box beside the name of a student(s) whose course(s) you want to assign. 5. Click the Save button, then click the Assign Courses button to the right-hand side of the student s name. The next page you see is also dependent on the type of subscription you purchased. Remember we are currently looking at a Family Yearly Subscription. In this type of subscription I have access to the entire core curriculum (Bible, History and Geography, Language Arts, Math, and Science) for grades 3 through 12. Grade levels are listed across the top, just above the subject area boxes. 6. Select the grade level you want for the student. Selecting the grad level may change the name of the subjects offered. 16 Assign courses to students 7. To select the subject(s) for the student, click the check box inside each subject in the grade level you want to assign. To assign a subject in another grade level, click the other grade level, and then click the check box beside the course in that grade level. The selected subjects (courses) appear in a list under the student's name. Next, you need to select the dates for the student to begin working on their schoolwork and the date the student should complete all of the work for these courses as well as the school days you want the school work scheduled on. All of the courses in the list will use the same start dates, end dates and school days. However, if you want to assign different start and end dates and school days for a course, click the Delete X to remove the selected course from the list. Then, after you have set the Start and End dates and school days for the courses in the list, go back and add the removed course again. Note Monarch requires a minimum of three (3) working school days for course scheduling. This means your Start and End dates for a course must include at least three working school days. 8. Under When will the student be working on these courses, do the following: 14 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

17 Assign courses to students a. To set the time frame for the courses (example A), if you have a school year set up, and you want to use a school year, select it. Or, to set custom Start and End dates for the courses in the list, click to the right of From to display a calendar and use the Month arrow or right arrow to select a start date. Days not available to assign as the start date appear as inactive on the calendar as highlighted in yellow in the example below. Click in field to the right of To and select an end date from the calendar. b. To set the working school days for the courses (example B), typically, Monday through Friday are selected. To keep these days as the school days that work will be scheduled for the course(s), do nothing. To choose different school days, clear the check box for the day(s) that you do not want schoolwork to be scheduled. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 15

18 Preview student assignments Monarch uses the Start and End dates or the select school year and the selected school days to create the student lesson plan. It looks at all of the available school days between the start and end dates and distributes all of the assignments in each course evenly across the available school days. 9. When finished, click the active Assign Now button. 10. If you have more students, follow the steps again to assign courses to each student. At this point, your student can log in and begin working! Preview student assignments Let s preview a student assignment and see what your student can expect. First, you should know how most Monarch lessons are structured. A typical lesson structure has: An Introduction to the lesson. The Introduction may have text to read, a picture, video, slide show, audio file, or some combination of these. Objectives or goals. An objective or goal tells your student what they should know when they have completed the lesson. Students should get in the habit of returning to the objectives when they finish their lesson and make sure they can do what the objectives say. Vocabulary words. Most lessons have one or more vocabulary words used in the lesson. The student should become familiar with all of these words. Each of the vocabulary words is recorded. 19 Preview student assignments hear the word. Below the list of words there are often spelling and vocabulary games as well as flash cards to help with this. Body of the lesson comes next. Sometimes lessons are broken up into multiple sections. Be sure students read all sections of the lesson. Several built-in tools are available to students in assignments: A Text to Speech tool allows students to have assignment text or a section of text read out loud to them. Students see a small speaker icon ( ) on the far right-hand side of their lesson. In the Teacher application, you see a Speak as drop-down list in the upper left-corner of an assignment preview page so that you can listen to the lesson text being spoken. See "Listen to audio version of assignments" on page 19. A Print ( ) tool lets students print their lessons, but not the questions. In the Teacher application, you can print assignments, questions, and the answer key. See "Print assignment text, problems and answers" on page 63. Important When you look at the lesson in the Teacher application, you see a Lesson Feedback button at the top of the page. If you come across anything in the lesson our curriculum team should know about or something you have a question or issue about, please click that button and let us know. The website is monitored and we do respond. See "Send feedback to the Monarch Team" on page 79. In the Teacher application, the lesson is in the top section of the page and problems are displayed in the lower section of the page. In the Student application, students toggle between the lesson content and the problems by clicking the Read and Questions buttons in the assignment toolbar. We ll look at the same lesson in both the Teacher application and the Student application. Teacher view of a lesson 1. For a teacher to preview a lesson, click Lesson Plan > Assigned Work. 2. If you have more than one student, select one name, and then click a subject in the subject tree. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool next to the Subject to see the units, and then click the expand ( ) tool again to see the assignments in the unit. 4. Click the View Answer Key button to open the assignment. 5. When finished, click Return to Assignments. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 17

20 Preview student assignments Once a student begins answering problems, there is an indicator associated with each question number. In the Teacher application the question numbers change color: Gray indicates an unanswered problem. Red lets you know the answer was fully or partially incorrect. Green means the answer was correct. In the Student application, students see: A green check mark next to a correct answer. An orange check mark if the answer is partially correct or incorrect with answer attempts remaining. A red X is displayed if all attempts are used. A Skip button that allows them to skip problems. Note If desired, you can customize the default school settings for assignments, quizzes, and tests that determine the permissions for students, such as allowing them to skip problems and modifying their answers multiple times. 21 Listen to audio version of assignments Student view of a lesson A student has several ways to open a lesson: By clicking the assignment in their Assignments list on their Home >Schoolwork page. By clicking the assignment on their Calendar. By clicking the assignment title on their Learn > Assignments page. Listen to audio version of assignments You can list to a person (speaker) read an audio version of assignment text. This text-to-speech feature works with assignment text only. 1. Open an assignment. 2. To select a person (speaker), click the Speak as list, and select a name. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 19

22 Change your background theme 3. To listen to the entire text, click the Play ( ) tool next to the Speak as list tool. Or, if you want to listen to selected text, highlight the text in the assignment, and then click the Play tool. As the speaker reads the text out loud, the text is highlighted in yellow and the word being spoken is highlighted in blue and bold text so that you can see the words being spoken as shown in this example. 4. Use the audio player tools to pause, stop, or play the audio reading. Change your background theme Monarch has a default background with no theme. You can change the background to one of the available themes. To change the background theme: 1. On the main nav bar, click Home, and then on the toolbar, click Theme or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Application function box, click the Change My Theme link. 2. Click an available theme to select it, or if you just want to select a classic theme for your calendar, select one of the Classic Themes. 20 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

23 Change your password Change your password You can change your Monarch password. Your new password must have: At least 6 characters with no spaces. At least one uppercase letter (example: D) and one lowercase letter (example: b). At least one number (example:8). To change your password: 1. On the Home > Dashboard page, in the Application function box, click the Change Password link. 2. In the Current Password field, enter your current password. 3. In the New Password field, enter a new password and then in the Verify New Password field, enter it again. 4. Click Change Password. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 21

24 Change your personal information Change your personal information You can change (update) your personal information so that the Monarch Team has updated information. 1. On the Home > Dashboard page, in the Application function box, click the Change My Info link. 2. In the fields, enter modified information. Remember - if you change your Monarch username, it must be unique. 3. Click Submit. 22 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

25 Set Up and Manage Your School Because you have the Teacher role, you are responsible for the administration (set up and management) of your school. When the Monarch Team originally set up your access to Monarch, we used default settings for all of the school-level settings, such as the number of attempts allowed for problems, whether or not the student could skip assignments, how assignments are weighted for grading, and the overall grade scale. We chose these default settings based on years of experience in education, but we know that you as the parent know your learner best, so we designed Monarch to let you make the changes you need to best meet the needs of your school and individual student. Note Generally speaking, it might be best if you keep the default settings, and then make changes as necessary. School-level settings are inherited by each student, so any changes you make at the school level apply to all students. However, you can customize the school settings for an individual student or for one subject for a single student. It is up to you. Administration tasks overview The Setup button on the main nav bar or the Administration function box on the Home > Dashboard page allow you to manage your school and students. School Setup takes you to the school level Assignment Settings page where you can customize assignment settings for your school and navigate to any of the other settings (School Year, Quiz/Test, Grade) pages to customize other school settings for your school. See "Change school assignment settings" on the next page. School Years takes you to the School Setup > School Year page where you can add, edit, and delete school years. A school year is an easy way to assign and track student work. Think of a school year as a defined semester, term, or special time frame. See "Manage school years" on page 27. 26 Change school assignment settings Student Setup is where you add students and also where you can customize any of the school-level settings for an individual student. You can also change the status of a student from Active to Inactive. See "Customize school settings for individual students" on page 31. Curriculum Setup is where you assign subjects to your students. Here you can also assign additional coursework, unassign a course or edit those same settings for one student in one course. For example, you may want to limit the number of problem attempts for one student in Language Arts or Math. You can do that here. See "Manage Subscriptions and Assigned Courses" on page 35. Reschedule Courses lets you reschedule and modify the working school days (block scheduling) for one or all active courses for one or more students. See "Reschedule courses from your Dashboard page" on page 28. Subscriptions is where you view your purchased subscriptions, see start and expiration dates, along with a link where you can Renew a subscription as needed. See "View and renew your subscriptions" on page 35. Change school assignment settings School assignment settings determine the number of attempts, whether or not students can skip problems, and other assignment options. Note Changes to school settings affect all students and all courses UNLESS you customize assignment settings for an individual student or customize assignment settings for an individual course. For more information, see "Customize school settings for individual students" on page 31, and "Customize school settings for individual courses (subjects)" on page On the main nav bar, click the Setup button, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click the School Setup link. The Assignment School page appears. The default settings for assignments are: Allow Skip Problem ON Access Answer Key OFF Maximum Problem Attempts 3 True/False Problem Attempts 1 Unlimited Problem Attempts OFF Bible Translation King James Version. 27 Change school quiz and test settings a. Select or clear options to allow students to skip problems or access the answer key. b. Enter new values for the number of attempts, or allow unlimited number of attempts. c. For Bible Translation, select the other option to use for translating Bible subjects. d. Click Save. Change school quiz and test settings School quiz and test settings are extra permissions for students while taking quizzes and tests. These permissions allow students to view scores during or after tests or quizzes, review and modify answers, skip problems, and access the answer key. Note Changes to school settings affect all students and all courses UNLESS you customize assignment settings for an individual student or customize assignment settings for an individual course. For more information, see "Customize school settings for individual students" on page 31, and "Customize school settings for individual courses (subjects)" on page On the main nav bar, click the Setup button, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click the School Setup link. 2. Click the Quiz/Test tab. Default settings for Quiz and Test are: Immediate Answer Feedback - gives a student only one attempt at each question and immediately lets them know if the answer is right or wrong. Default is OFF. No Answer Feedback - allows students only one attempt to answer each question, but does not show them if the answer is correct or not. Unanswered questions are graded as zero. Default is OFF. Open Page allows students to review questions and change their answers multiple times until the quiz or test is marked as complete and the student exits the quiz or test. Default is ON. Open Book - permits the student to exit and re-enter the quiz or test as many times as the student wishes until he/she marks the quiz/test as complete. Default is OFF. 28 Change school grade and assignment weights settings Allow Skip Problem - lets a student skip a problem on a quiz or test with a reason or a request for help. Default is ON. Access Answer Key allows students to view the answer key if all attempts are used up or if the question was answered correctly. Default is OFF. 3. Make changes as needed, and then click Save. Change school grade and assignment weights settings School grade and assignment weights establish a letter grade based on the score percentage scale and the weight for each assignment type (lessons, projects, quizzes, and tests) towards the unit grade. For grades, you can set whether to display the grade as a letter, percentage, or both. Note Changes to school settings affect all students and all courses UNLESS you customize assignment settings for an individual student or customize assignment settings for an individual course. For more information, see "Customize school settings for individual students" on page 31, and "Customize school settings for individual courses (subjects)" on page On the main nav bar, click the Setup button, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click the School Setup link. 2. Click the Grade tab. Default grade and assignment weights settings are: Grading Scale A = B = C = D = Assignment Weights Lessons 5% Projects 20% Quizzes 25% Tests 50% Grade Display Both letter grade and percentage grade ON Letter Grade only OFF Percentage Grade only OFF 26 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

29 Manage school years 3. Make changes as needed, and then click Save. Manage school years School year settings let you create a time period to use for assigning subjects and creating reports. It simplifies the course assignment and reporting processes for you. School years are optional. 1. On the main nav bar, click the Setup button, and then click School Year, or on the Home > Dashboard page, under Administration, click the School Years link. a. To create a new school year, enter a name, first day and last day, and click Create School Year. b. To edit an existing school year, for the school year, click Edit. Make changes to the name and dates, and click Save. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 27

30 What happens when you reschedule courses for your students c. To delete an existing school year, for the school year, click Delete. Confirm the deletion. What happens when you reschedule courses for your students You can reschedule all active courses or a single active course for a student. When rescheduling a course, you can select new Begin and End dates and/or select the working school days, such as a setting up block scheduling for the course. Working school days are set up on your school calendar. Tip To learn more about how to manage school and non-school days on your calendar, see "Manage your school and non-school days" on page 43. Rescheduling a course forces Monarch to automatically redistribute all yet to be completed assignments across the remaining (selected) working school days within the selected Begin and End dates. Completed assignments are not affected by rescheduling. Note For projects in units of rescheduled courses, the due dates assigned to any projects are the due dates of the last assignments in the respective units. If desired, you can change the due dates for projects by unassigning and then assigning them again and selecting different due dates. See "Unassign and assign units, lessons, and projects" on page 56. There are several ways to reschedule one or more courses to select new begin and end dates or set up block scheduling on working school days for your students. You can: Reschedule courses from the Dashboard page. See "Reschedule courses from your Dashboard page" below. Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page. See "Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page" on page 60. Reschedule courses from the Calendar. See "Reschedule courses from your Calendar" on page 47. Reschedule courses from your Dashboard page Two links on your Home > Dashboard page are available so that you can quickly and easily reschedule one or more courses. Rescheduling allows you to set up block scheduling for one or more courses by selecting the working schooldays for a course. Note Monarch requires a minimum of three (3) working school days for course scheduling. Do one of the following: To reschedule courses for a selected student, in the Lesson Plan function box, under the student's name, click the Reschedule Work link. To reschedule courses for all students, in the Administration function box, click the Reschedule Courses link. 2. If you selected the Reschedule Courses link and have more than one student, select the student's name. The Lesson Plan > Reschedule page appears showing all courses assigned to the student. 3. 32 Reschedule courses from your Dashboard page a. To change the Start date for the course, in the From date field, click to display a calendar. Use the Month down arrow (or the right arrow after the year) and select a different month and date. Days that are not available for the student to start the course on (example A) show as inactive on the calendar. Or, just change the From date. b. To change the End date for the course, in the second field after to, click to display a calendar, and select an new end date. Or, just change the existing end date. c. To change the working school days for the course and set up block scheduling, the original schooldays for the course appear as selected. If you want to set up a block schedule for the course, if a day is selected, and you do not want schoolwork scheduled on that day, click to clear it. Courses can only be scheduled on working school days that you have set up on your school calendar. In the example below, the course was originally scheduled for Monday through Thursday because Friday is not a working school day for the student. Thursday was cleared so this means that block scheduling is in effect for Monday through Wednesday and no school work will be scheduled on Thursdays during the selected Start and End dates for the course. d. If you have more than one student, click each name to reschedule any courses, following the steps again. 6. To see the effect of the rescheduling, view your calendar. Customize school settings for individual students School assignment, quiz/test, and grade settings can also be customized for an individual student. For example, you have four students. One of your students is having issues taking tests. You want the student to have success when taking tests. To do this, you can allow that individual student to see answer feedback during quizzes and tests and let the student exit and re-enter a quiz or test as many times as he/she wants. Your other three students will use the default school settings for tests. Note Any customizations you make to school settings for an individual student are no longer affected by changes to the related school setting UNLESS you click the Default button to remove the customizations for the student. If desired, you can remove the customized settings for a student and go back to the default school settings. To customize school settings for a student: 1. On the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click the Student Setup link, or on the main nav bar, click Setup and then on the function toolbar, click the Student Setup button. The Student Setup page appears. 2. Under the student's name, click the settings link for the type of school settings you want to customize for the student. Assignment Settings. For more information, see "Change school assignment settings" on page 24. Quiz and Test Settings. For more information, see "Change school quiz and test settings" on page 25. Grade Settings. The settings page now has an indicator that the settings have been customized and a Default button so that you can remove the customizations. To remove customizations for a student and go back to the default school settings: 1. On the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click the Student Setup link, or on the main nav bar, click Setup and then on the function toolbar, click the Student Setup button. The Student Setup page appears. 2. Under the student's name, click the settings link for the type of setting you want to restore to the school default settings: Assignment Settings, Quiz and Test Settings, or Grade Settings. 3. Click the Default button. 4. Click OK to confirm that you want to restore the settings to their defaults. 35 Change student information and activate resources and activities Change student information and activate resources and activities After you have set up your students in Monarch, you may need to change their Monarch username or password or make the student inactive. You can also activate and deactivate resources and activities for their Student Dashboard. Resource and activities include things like a historical timeline, flash cards, math and vocabulary drill activities, and a periodic table. Some resources are already turned on. To change student information and activate resources and activities: 1. Do one of the following: On the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration box, click the Student Setup link, and then click the Student's name link. On the main nav bar, click Setup > Student Setup, and then click the Settings button on the toolbar. The Student Settings/Student Dashboard page appears. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 33

37 Manage Subscriptions and Assigned Courses You use the Subscriptions and Assigned tabs on the Curriculum Setup toolbar to manage your Monarch subscriptions and assign and manage courses for your students. The Subscriptions tab is where you: View and renew your subscriptions. See "View and renew your subscriptions" below. Assign courses. See "Assign courses to students" on page 12. The Assigned tab is where you: View courses assigned to student(s). Unassign courses. See "Unassign courses from students" on the next page. Customize the school settings for a single subject(course) for one or more students. See "Customize school settings for individual courses (subjects)" on page 37. View and renew your subscriptions You use the Curriculum Setup > Subscriptions tab to view and renew your Monarch subscriptions. Monarch has several subscription plans: A Family subscription may have three students assigned to any of the available courses. An Individual subscription may have only one student assigned to any of the available courses. Both Family and Individual subscriptions include access to all core courses for grades 3-12, in Bible, Language Arts, History and Geography, Mathematics, and Science. Note If you have a Family or Individual subscription, you should assign only one course per subject area at a time; for example, if your student is almost finished with Math 600 and you want to assign Math 700, you should not do that until the student completes Math 600. 38 Unassign courses from students These subscription types have two options when purchased, yearly or monthly. If you purchased a yearly subscription, the start and expiration dates display for each subscription. If you purchased a monthly subscription, your next billing date is displayed. Single Course subscriptions can be assigned to one student for a period of 18 months. Your start and expiration date are shown on the Subscriptions page. Any individual Monarch course can be purchased as a Single Course subscription, but Electives are only available as a Single Course subscription. This example shows each type of subscription, Family, Individual, and Course. To renew a subscription, click the Renew link. Follow any instructions provided. Unassign courses from students If you made a mistake assigning a course to a student or if you feel the student is not ready to begin a course, you can unassign it. If the student has started the course, all work will be deleted and cannot be recovered. 1. On the main nav bar, click Setup, click Curriculum Setup on the toolbar, and then click the Assigned button, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Administration function box, click Curriculum Setup. 43 View and Manage Your School Calendar Your school calendar plays an important role for you and your students. You, as the Teacher, see the assignments each student has assigned by day. Students also have a school calendar, but they only see their own assignments. You, as the school administrator, also set school and non-school days on the school calendar. Working school days determine the pacing of assignments for courses. See "Manage your school and non-school days" on page 43. To access your school calendar, click Lesson Plan, and then click Calendar, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan box, click the Calendar link. What you can see and do on your school calendar As mentioned previously, on your school calendar you can see the assignments each student has assigned by day. Colors on the calendar let you easily see if assignments are: Overdue because the assignment titles display in red text. Blocked because pink highlighting appears behind the assignment title text. A blocked assignment prevents a student from moving forward in that subject. For more information about unblocking assignments, see "Unblock and block assignments" on page 62. Complete because gray highlighting appears behind the assignment title text. You can also see and set up custom events or activities on the calendar. School-level events and activities are listed immediately below the day/date while individual student events and activities are listed immediately below the student s name on the date(s) of the event or activity. 44 What you can see and do on your school calendar Additional calendar features let you: Click the drop-down box (example A) to toggle between the School Week view or the Full Week (Sun. through Sat.) view. Reschedule all subjects for a student using the Reschedule all Courses button (example B). See "Reschedule courses from your Calendar" on page 47. See the total school days and the number of school days left for each student (example C). See if a day is marked as a Non-School Day or a School Day (example D). This is important to know if you want to do block scheduling of courses. See "Manage your school and non-school days" on the facing page. If all the assignments for a student cannot be shown, a More link (example E) opens another window so that you can see the entire list of assignments for that day for a student. 42 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

45 Manage your school and non-school days Manage your school and non-school days When your school was set up, by default, working "school" days are set up for Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday are set up as "non-school" days. This means that when you assign a course (or courses) to a student, you select a school year or set the begin and end dates and you select the working school days. Note Monarch requires a minimum of three (3) working school days for course scheduling. This means your Start and End dates for a course must include at least three working school days. Typically, for the working school days, Monarch shows Monday through Friday as automatically selected as shown in this example. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 43

46 Manage your school and non-school days This means Monarch spreads schoolwork across the"school" days of Monday through Friday for the specified time frame. However, you can select specific working school days for a course to set up block scheduling. In this example of a Full Week calendar, Saturday and Sunday do not have any schoolwork scheduled because they are considered non-working schooldays. In addition, most recognized holidays are automatically set up as "non-school" days. For example, typically Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day and the following Friday, and the week of Christmas, are automatically set as recognized holidays. This means, for courses with Begin and End dates that have recognized holidays included in the time frame, no schoolwork is scheduled for those recognized holidays. If desired, for your school schedule, you can change a school day to a non-school day and change a non-school day to a school day. When the change is made for school or non-school day, Monarch automatically adjusts all uncompleted schoolwork for courses within the time frame. For example, you have a local co-op for the next eight Fridays. You can make those "school" days into "non-school" days and Monarch will adjust your student's schoolwork. 44 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then click Calendar, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, click the Calendar link. 2. Do one of following: To change a school day to a non-school day, click the day/date. Click Non-School Day. Monarch refreshes the calendar, schoolwork is adjusted, and the day now shows as Non-School Day with no schoolwork assigned. To change a non-school day to a school day, click the day/date. Click School Day. Monarch refreshes the calendar, schoolwork is adjusted, and the day now shows as School Day and may have schoolwork assigned if any courses use the time frame. Manage events and activities You can add school-level and student-level events or activities to the calendar. If needed, you can also delete these events or activities so that they no longer appear on the calendar. Add and delete school events and activities 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then click Calendar, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan box, click Calendar. 2. To add a school-level event or activity, click the day/date the event or activity begins. 3. Enter an Event Name and select the End Date. 4. If the event or activity falls on a school day or you want to make the day a school day, click the School Day button. 51 View and Manage Student Lessons Monarch makes it easy for you to quickly see what your students have been doing, preview what s coming up for them, reschedule work, provide assistance, and grade completed lessons using the Lesson Plan tool. The Lesson Plan tool on the main nav bar opens another toolbar containing the Assigned Work, Calendar, and Grading Tasks tools. On your Home > Dashboard page, the Lesson Plan box also contains links where you can access the school calendar, see assigned work for students, reschedule work, perform grading tasks, and change settings for an individual student. View student progress in assigned work The Assigned Work page (of the Lesson Plan) shows you all of the subjects assigned to your student(s). If you have more than one student, click the student's name link to display their assigned subjects (courses) in a tree format as shown in this example. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 49

To see how your student is doing in their work or to open an assignment: 1. For a selected student, in the subject tree, click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. Below the buttons you see a summary of the student s grade for the unit, including the student s grade for all completed lessons, quizzes, projects, and tests, as well as the Weighted Grade for the entire unit. The Weighted Grade is what you would see on the Grade Report or Report Card reports (see "Run Reports" on page 75. The other grades are the components of the Weighted Grade. Below the grade summary you see a list of assignments in this unit. For each assignment you see: Assignment Title. Type of assignment (Lesson, Project, Quiz, or Test). Scheduled Due Date. Score (for all completed assignments). Date and time the assignment was completed. Date and time the assignment was graded (These last two dates are only different if there is a teacher-graded item in the assignment.) 3. To see information about a specific assignments, click any assignment title in the assignment list or click the expand ( ) tool next to the Unit title in the lesson tree on the left side of the page. If you click the expand ( ) tool in the lesson tree, click the assignment title in the list that you want to open. This action opens the Assignment view page as shown in the example. 54 View student progress in assigned work On the Assignment view page, you see a legend at the bottom of the page that explains the color-coding of assignments. No highlight - Assignment is scheduled to be completed. Gold highlight - Assignment is not currently assigned. Pink highlight - Assignment is blocked. You must unblock the assignment so that the student can proceed to work on it. Gray highlight - Assignment is completed. You have several options available based on whether or not the selected assignment has been completed. 4. If the selected assignment has been completed, use one of the buttons (example C) to: Click the Review Student Work button to open the assignment with the student's answer and review their work. Click the View Answer Key button to view all work including seeing the answers to questions. Click the Clear Work button to erase all of the work the student has done in the assignment and reassign it again to him/her. 55 View student progress in assigned work Click the View Answer Key button to open the assignment. Click the Unassign Lesson button to unassign the selected assignment. Just below the buttons for any assignment (completed or uncompleted), you see: Assignment Type (Lesson, Project, Quiz, or Test) Start Date and Due Date. Date the assignment was first opened by the student (Date First Accessed). If the assignment has been worked on, you also see the last date the student worked on the assignment (Date Last Worked). The other information displaying in the table includes: List of problem numbers. Number of Points available and number of points awarded for the problem. Score (both % and letter grade). Needs Grading column displays a symbol ( ) if the problem is a teacher graded item. Student Skipped column displays the same symbol and the reason if the student skipped the problem. 56 Skip problems in lessons Teacher Skipped column displays this same symbol if you skipped the problem for the student. Attempted column shows the date the student last attempted the problem. Attempts shows the number of times the student tried to answer the problem. Answer Shown displays Yes if the student clicked the Show Answers button after exhausting all available problem attempts or checked to verify the correct answer. Otherwise you see No in this column. At the bottom of the Points and Score columns you see the totals for the entire assignment. 6. To go into an assignment's problem, click the problem number. This is one way you can locate and grade items that require teacher grading. You can also use the Grading Tasks page. See "Preview student assignments" on page 16. Skip problems in lessons As the Teacher, you can open a student's lesson and mark problems (questions) so that they are skipped and the student does not have to complete the problem. Later, if you decide to, you can mark the problem as "Assigned" which places it back in the student's lesson to be completed. To mark a problem as skipped: 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then on the toolbar, click Assigned Work. Or, on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, click the Assigned Work link. 2. If you have more than one student, select the name, and then click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool again next to the unit name to display the assignment view. 4. In the assignment's problem list to the right, click the Problem link for the problem that you want to skip. 5. The yellow box now shows that the Teacher Skip button has been replaced by an Assign button and the problem shows that it has been skipped by the teacher. 7. To continue skipping problems in the assignment, click a problem number, or if you are finished, click the Return to Assignments button. The assignment's problem list now shows that the problem has been skipped by the Teacher. To assign a skipped problem: 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then on the toolbar, click Assigned Work. Or, on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, click the Assigned Work link. 2. If you have more than one student, select the name, and then click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool again next to the unit name to display the assignment view. You may have to click the unit title again in the subject tree to refresh the list. Unassign and assign units, lessons, and projects You can unassign an entire unit and assign a unit that has not yet been assigned to your student. When a unit is assigned, the due date for each project in the unit is the due date of the last assignment in the respective unit. You can also unassign and assign single lessons and projects. Tip If you want to change the due date for a project in a unit that has just been assigned or rescheduled, select the project in the subject tree, click Unassign Lesson. Select the project again in the lesson tree, and click Assign. Select new Start date and Due dates for the project. The Start date and Due date must be working school days for the student. Unassign and assign units 1. On the Lesson Plan toolbar, click the Assigned Work button. 2. For a selected student, click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. This action displays the unit view. 3. In the subject tree, select the unit, and do one of the following: To unassign the entire unit, click the Unassign this Unit button. When Monarch refreshes the page, all assignments are now highlighted in the color gold. To assign the unit, click the Assign this Unit button. 59 Unassign and assign lessons and projects Unassign and assign lessons and projects You can unassign a single assignment (lesson or project) as long as the assignment work has not been completed. You can assign an unassigned lesson or project in a unit to a student to select new start dates and for projects, select new due dates. Note When assigning lessons or projects, you need to select a start date that is a working school day for the student, and for projects only, you need to select a due date that is a working school day for the student. For more information, see "Manage your school and non-school days" on page On the Lesson Plan toolbar, click the Assigned Work button. 2. For a selected student, click the expand( ) tool next to a subject name. This action displays the unit view. 3. In the subject tree, click the expand ( ) tool next to a unit name. This action displays the assignment view. 4. Do one of the following: To unassign a lesson or project, select the assignment in the subject tree, and then click the Unassign Lesson button. Confirm you want to unassign the lesson or project. To assign a lesson or project, select the assignment in the subject tree, and then click the Assign button. 60 Assign and unassign alternate tests/quizzes and other non-default assignments If you are assigning a project, in the Start date field, click to open a calendar and select a start date that is a working school day, or keep the default of today's date. In the Due date field, click to select a due date that is a working school day from the calendar, and then click Assign Project. Assign and unassign alternate tests/quizzes and other non-default assignments A unit contains other types of assignments, such as Course Overview, Special Project, Review Game, Alternate Test, Alternate Quiz, and Reference. These other assignment types are not assigned to the student by default. Assignments not assigned by default in the unit are highlighted in the color gold. The student can open the Course Overview, Review Game and Reference lesson from their My Schoolwork page at any time so these types of non-default assignments cannot be assigned and unassigned by you. However, the Alternate Test, Alternate Quiz, and Special Project assignments are available for you to assign (and unassign) to the student as you need. The following steps explain how to assign and unassign an alternate test or quiz. Assigning and unassigning a Special Project is a little different, so see "Unassign and assign units, lessons, and projects" on page 56. 61 Assign and unassign alternate tests/quizzes and other non-default assignments 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan. Or, on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, select the Assigned Work link. 2. If you have more than one student, click the student's name, and then click the expand ( ) tool next to the subject with the Alternate Test, Alternate Quiz, or other assignment, you want to assign. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool next to the Unit with the assignment. 4. Click the Alternate Test or Alternate Quiz (highlighted in the color gold) in the subject tree. 5. Click the Assign button. 6. From the calendar that appears, select the Start date. It must be an available working school day. Unavailable school working days appear as dimmed on the calendar. Or, if desired, leave the Start Date blank to use the default date. Click the Set Date button. 7. On the confirmation message, click Close. The gold highlighted color is removed from the Alternate Test or Alternate Quiz in the unit. Note Any time you assign an alternate quiz or test to your student, the grade retained and used to calculate the unit and course score is the last score the student received. The original and alternate quiz or test scores are NOT averaged. To unassign an alternate test or quiz: 1. Expand the unit in the subject tree to see the assignments. 2. Select the Alternate Test or Alternate Quiz. The item will not have any highlighting. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 59

62 Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page 3. Click the Unassign Lesson button. 4. On the confirmation message, click Close. In the subject tree, the Alternate Test or Alternate Quiz now has gold highlighting to indicate it is not assigned. Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page You can reschedule one or all courses for a student from the Assigned Work page. Rescheduling allows you to set up block scheduling for one or more courses by selecting the working schooldays for a course. Note Monarch requires a minimum of three (3) working school days for course scheduling. This means your Start and End dates for a course must include at least three working school days. 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then click the Assigned Work button on the toolbar, or on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, click the Reschedule Work link. 2. For a selected student, select a subject. For example, select Science To reschedule just the Science 500 course, click the Reschedule this Course button. Or, to reschedule all courses for the student, click the Reschedule all Courses for This Student button. 4. Depending on the button you selected, do the following: If you selected to reschedule one course, proceed to step 5. If you selected to reschedule all courses for the student, follow the instructions in steps 3a -d in "Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page" above. 60 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

63 Reschedule courses from the Assigned Work page 5. In the Reschedule This Course dialog box, by default a calendar appears so that you can select a new From (Begin) date for the course. Days that are not available for the student to start the course appear as inactive. To change the Begin date, select a date on the month calendar or to go forward a month, click the right arrow next to the Month title. 6. To change the End date for the course, in the To field, enter a date or click to display a calendar. Select a month and day. 7. To change the working school days, by default, the existing school days are already selected. Clear a day or days to set up a block schedule for the course. This example shows that the course has been rescheduled to Monday, Tuesday and Thursday only. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 61

64 Unblock and block assignments 8. When finished, click Reschedule. 9. To see the effect of the rescheduling, view your calendar. See "View and Manage Your School Calendar" on page 41. Unblock and block assignments You can unblock a blocked assignment and block an assignment. Remember any time an assignment is blocked, every assignment after it is also blocked. When you remove the block on the assignment, it removes the block on future assignments. 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then on the toolbar, click Assigned Work. 2. For a selected student, click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool again next to the unit name to display the assignment view. 4. In the subject tree, do one of the following: To unblock an assignment, select the blocked assignment (highlighted in the color pink), and then click the Unblock Lesson button. To block an assignment, select it in the lesson tree, and then click Block Lesson. All assignments after the blocked lesson are now highlighted in pink. 62 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

65 Print assignment text, problems and answers Print assignment text, problems and answers As a Teacher, you have several printing options: you can print assignment text and images, print problems and the answers, and just print the problems without the answers. 1. Open an assignment. See "View student progress in assigned work" on page To print the text and images in this section of the lesson, click the Print button. 3. To print another section, click the Previous button to go to that section and click the Print button again. If a section has a video, you see a white space on your printed page where the video is in the lesson. 4. To print the problems with answers, in the grading box, click the Print Problems Answer Key button. A separate window appears. Click Print. 5. To print just the problems with no answers, in the grading box, click the Print Problems Blank button. A separate window appears. Click Print. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 63

66 Grade completed work Grade completed work You use the Grading Tasks page to see all items that required teacher grading. To open the Grading Tasks page, on the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then click Grading Tasks on the toolbar. Or, on your Dashboard Home page, in the Lesson Plan box, click the Grading Tasks link below the student's name. The Grading Tasks page also displays any problems the student has skipped. To grade an assignment: 1. Click the assignment link. 64 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

67 Other grading tasks You are taken directly to the problem that requires grading. In the problem (or project, experiment, essay) area, you see something like this: 2. Read the student s answer and the TEACHER ONLY: section (example A). This gives you some ideas of what to look for in the answer. 3. In the grade box (example B), do the following: a. Enter the number of points to give the student for the answer in the first box and the total number of points possible in the second box. For example 1 of 1 or 3 of 5. b. Click the Grade button. Monarch automatically calculates the percentage grade. 4. If you are finished manually grading assignments, click the Return to Assignments button on the top of the page to go back to the Grading Tasks page. Other grading tasks Let s take a closer look at that grade box. There are a few other tasks you can perform using the buttons in this box. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 65

68 How problems are scored Rework: If you want the student to attempt the problem again, you can click this button to clear the attempt counter and reassign this problem only to the student. See "Clear problems and reassign" below. Teacher Skip: Lets you permit the student to skip the problem and not have it factored into the grading of the assignment, unit, or subject score. See "Skip problems in lessons" on page 54. Print Problems Review: Lets you to print all of the problems with the student answers. This makes a great study tool. "Print assignment text, problems and answers" on page 63. Print Problems Blank: Lets you print the all of the problems without the answers. Note At the current time, there are two problem types that do not print - drag and drop problems and graphic multiple choice. How problems are scored Problems are scored based on their point value. Each problem and assignment score is a percentage based on the total number of points received, divided by the total number of points possible. Point values vary from problem to problem, depending on the number and type of answers required. Here are a couple of examples of how lesson scores are calculated: If you have 10 problems, you can receive a total of 10 points. If you miss 1, then you have a total of 9 points out of a possible 10, and your percentage grade is 90%. If you have 10 problems, but one of those problems is worth 2 points, then you can receive a total of 11 points. If you miss 1, then you have a total of 10 points out of a possible 11, and your percentage grade is 91%. If you have 10 problems, but one of these is a 9-point sort problem, then you can receive a total of 18 points. If you sort 3 of the items in the sort problem incorrectly, but get all the other problems in the assignment right, you will receive a total of 15 points with a percentage grade of 83%. Clear problems and reassign As the Teacher, you can open a student's lesson and clear the work and attempts for problems and reassign them. 69 Clear student work 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then on the toolbar, click Assigned Work. Or, on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, click the Assigned Work link. 2. If you have more than one student, select the name, and then click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool again next to the unit name to display the assignment view. 4. In the assignment's problem list to the right, click the Problem link for the problem that you clear the attempts and reassign to the student. 5. In the yellow box to the right, click the Rework button. 6. Click OK to confirm. 7. To continue reassigning problems in the assignment, click a problem number, or if you are finished, click the Return to Assignments button. The assignment's problem list now shows that the problem no longer has a score and the attempts column is cleared. Clear student work If an assignment has been completed, you can clear (erase) all of the work your student has done in the assignment. Once the work has been cleared, you cannot recover it. When you clear the work for a completed assignment, Monarch automatically reassigns the assignment to its original Begin date. To clear student work: 1. On the main nav bar, click Lesson Plan, and then on the toolbar, click Assigned Work. Or, on the Home > Dashboard page, in the Lesson Plan function box, for the student, click the Assigned Work link. 2. If you have more than one student, select the name, and then click the expand ( ) tool next to a subject name. 3. Click the expand ( ) tool again next to the unit name to display the assignment view. 4. In the subject tree, to clear the work for a completed assignment, select the completed assignment (highlighted in the color gray), and then click the Clear Work button. 70 Clear student work 5. Click OK to confirm that you want all the work to be removed from the assignment. 6. At the Assignment Cleared message, click Close. The assignment has the original Start Date and Due Date. If you want to change the Start Date, you must unassign the assignment, and then assign it again and select a new Start Date. 71 Assign and Grade Custom Essays and Special Projects Essays and Special Projects are your own custom assignments that you can add to a unit and have the grade for the assignment included in the overall unit and course scores. You can create the custom essay or Special Project in the program of your choice, such as word processing program, spreadsheet, or presentation program. Then, you upload the essay or project file into a Special Project assignment within the unit. Every unit in Monarch courses includes a non-assigned, blank Special Project assignment. You assign the uploaded file to the Special Project assignment and then set a start date and end date for the Special Project assignment. A Special Project assignment is accessible to the student as soon as the start date has been reached. You can unassign and reassign Special Projects just as you can standard projects and lessons. Once the student completes the Special Project and has submitted it for grading, you will see the item for the student on the Lesson Plan > Grading Tasks page. Assign essays or projects as Special Projects To assign an essay or project to a unit as a Special Project: 1. Create the custom essay or project file. 2. Save the file on your computer. 3. Log in to Monarch as the Teacher and go to the unit with the Special Project assignment you want to assign. Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 69

72 How students work on Special Projects 4. Click the Special Project assignment (highlighted in gold) in the subject tree to display the View Answer Key and Assign buttons in the right side of the page. 5. Click the View Answer Key button to open the assignment. 6. In the Questions area of the assignment, click the Browse button or Choose File button (depending on your browser) and locate the file you saved in Step Click the Upload button beside the file name. You then see a link to the file immediately below the buttons. 8. Click the Return to Assignments button in the upper right-hand corner of the assignment. 9. In the subject tree, click the Special Project assignment again. 10. Now, click the Assign button. 11. Select the Start date (it must be a school day) and Due date. 12. Click Assign Project. The Special Project is no longer highlighted in gold and your student should now see the "Special Project" assignment on their Schoolwork page when the start date has been reached. How students work on Special Projects The student follows these steps to complete their work on a Special Project assignment. 1. Clicks the link for the assignment. 2. Clicks the Questions button on the function toolbar at the top of the page. 3. Clicks the link to the file you uploaded in the Question area of the assignment. 4. They can then complete the assignment in that file, in another file, or in the project box provided in the question, based on the instructions you provided, upload the file with their work (if they did not use the project box). See "How students upload files to Monarch" below. 5. If the student is using the project text box, they need to be sure to click the Save button (below the File: area) to retain their work. 6. When the student has completed the work and is ready to have you grade it, they should click the Submit Answer button and then click the Mark Lesson as Complete button. How students upload files to Monarch The following steps explain how a student uploads external files that they created for projects. 1. Your student creates a file according to the project instructions. 2. Saves the file to their computer or device. 3. Logs in to Monarch and opens the project assignment. 4. Clicks the Show Questions button. 5. Clicks the Browse button or Choose File button, depending on their browser, and navigates to the location of the saved file. 70 Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0

73 View and grade Special Projects 6. Once the file saved in Step 2 shows in the File: box, clicks the Upload button. When the file is done uploading, a message appears The file was uploaded successfully! The name of the file of the appears as a link right below the text box with a Delete button, just in case your student uploaded the wrong file. Delete only removes the file from Monarch, not from your student's computer or device. 7. When your student is finished with the project, clicks the Submit Answer button. 8. When your student is ready to submit the project for grading, clicks the Mark Lesson as Complete button. View and grade Special Projects When the student has completed the work on the Special Project assignments, you should see a link to the project on your Lesson Plan > Grading Tasks page. Because essays and projects are teacher-graded items, you will often find TEACHER ONLY information available in a yellow box in either the presentation/instructions part of the assignment or below the paragraph box in the Questions section of the assignment. This information may give you some pointers of what to look for in the student s work or it might give you ideas for scoring. It does give you an idea of what the objective of the assignment is intended to teach. It might look something like this: Monarch Teacher User Guide v4.0 71

74 View and grade Special Projects To view and grade a Special Project: 1. On the Lesson Plan > Grading Tasks toolbar, under Grading Tasks, select the project. In a project, students often have the option to use either the open text box in the question area to enter their work or they can create a file using many different software packages, such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation package, like Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and then uploads the external file into Monarch. For more information, see "How students upload files to Monarch" on page If the student used this Upload function to create a file with their project, you see the link to their file. Upload the file to read their project. 3. To enter a grade, in the yellow grading box to the right, for Problem Score, enter the points received in the first box and points possible in the second box. Click the Grade button. Or, if you feel the special project was not completed properly, you can clear all attempts and reassign it again to the student. 75 Read and Send Messages Monarch has an internal messaging system that lets you as the Teacher, send and receive messages from your students. The Messages box on your Dashboard lets you know if you have new, unread messages. It shows you who the message is from and when it was sent and the topic (subject) of the message. Up to five unread messages display in the Messages box on your Dashboard at a time. To read a message, click the (subject line) link. If you have additional unread messages, you can click the Inbox link below the displayed messages or the Messages tool on the main nav bar. From your Inbox, you can see all of the new messages you have received. Unread messages appear in bold text the list of messages. When you view a message, from either your Inbox or your Sent Items message box, you can see the following information: Who the message is from or who the message was sent to.
