Cosmetology is one of the fastest growing industries. It provides mobility, flexibility, challenges and a wide range of opportunities. We at the Academy believe that those who have the talent, the desire and the willingness to learn can greatly benefit from our teaching. Our mission is to guide, educate, and provide each student with the comprehensive training to succeed, and to produce competent, wellrounded, and professional in the Nail, Facial and Permanent Makeup industries. The Academy puts great emphasis on one-on-one and hands-on training. K.B. Beauty Academy was established by Kim T. Buchanan. She saw the need for a school that would produce qualified and experienced Nail Specialists, Facial Specialists and Permanent Makeup Specialists. Kim has been working in the beauty salon business for the past 15 years, as a salon owner, Nail Specialist, Full Specialist and Permanent Makeup Specialist. She also is licensed by the State of Florida as a school, mobile and seminars instructor. 1
2 LEGAL OWNERSHIP K.B. BEAUTY ACADEMY is owned by K.B. Enterprises, LLC. a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Florida. GOVERNING BODY Kim T. Buchanan serves as President, Director and the main Instructor at the Academy. Kim graduated from Dupage College in Illinois. Kim also graduated From Florida Academy of Hair Design as a Full Specialist. Kim was trained at US Nails and Beauty Supply Inc. and the Makeup Institute and received certificates of completion in Permanent Makeup and Makeup respectively. Pat Buchanan serves as Vice-President, Director of Admissions, Office Manager, and Treasurer/Comptroller at the Academy. Pat holds several undergraduate and post-graduate degrees from the States of Wisconsin and New York. Pat also graduated from Florida Academy of Hair Design as a Nail Specialist. ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Kim T. Buchanan works full time overseeing the day to day running of the Academy. Extensive experiences in beauty school and beauty Salon management. Pat Buchanan works full time as Director of Admissions and Placement. Works with each and every student from first inquiry To career placement and beyond. FACULTY K.B. Beauty Academy is a very small school. When it opened its doors for business in July 2004, Kim T. Buchanan was the only instructor for all 2
3 three programs, Nail Specialist, Facial Specialist and Permanent Makeup Specialist. Kim graduated from Florida Academy of Hair Design as a Facial Specialist. Presently, Kim has three part-time assistants, Melinda, Melanie and Molly. Melinda holds a BS degree from UF. She also graduated from Florida Academy of Hair Design as a Nail Specialist. Melinda has many years of experience in salon management. She specializes in Nail technology and nail arts. Melanie graduated from USF with a BS degree. Melanie and Molly graduated from K.B. Beauty Academy as Nail and Facial specialists. Melanie and Molly specialize in Nail technology, skin care and waxing. SCHOOL FACILITIES K.B. Beauty Academy is a private vocational school specializing in one-on-one and hands-on training in the following three programs: Nail Specialist, Facial Specialist, and Permanent Make-up Specialist. The Academy was established in July of It is situated on a halfacre site, at the corner of South Lakewood Boulevard and Morrison Road, just north of Brandon Main Street. The Academy s official address is 321 South Lakewood Drive, Brandon, FL The Academy is conveniently located near several super markets, shopping centers, restaurants and a shopping mall. We are easily accessible to Brandon Parkway and Interstates 75 and 4. K.B. Beauty Academy has over 3,000 square feet and six class rooms for school use. One large class room houses three spa pedicure stations and six nail stations; two other large class rooms have eight nail stations, five spa pedicures and a reception area. The fourth class room is set aside for permanent makeup. The fifth class room is for facials, and the sixth room is the library, a wonderful resource center with books, magazines, periodicals, video and audio media for faculty and student use. 3
4 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS NAIL SPECIALIST 240 Clock Hours PROGRAM OBJECTIVE The objective of our Nail Specialist program is to introduce students to different types of mechanical and chemical treatments of the nails, for aesthetic rather than medical purposes. We teach and guide students to acquire knowledge and achieve experience in order to become confident and competent nail specialists. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Nail Specialist program takes six weeks at 40 hours per week to complete. Graduates will enter this field with a great deal of confidence and competence from performing manicures, pedicures, nail extensions, nail repairs, nail art and air brushing. PROGRAM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS OR PREREQUISITES 1. Students must be 16 years of age or older. Any student under the age of 18 requires parent/guardian approval and signature to enroll. 2. Students must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. In the absence of high school diploma or GED equivalent, the applicant must pass the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test with the minimum score of Students must submit a copy of Social Security card, a Florida driver s license and/or an ID card. 4. 6 FACIAL SPECIALIST 260 Clock Hours PROGRAM OBJECTIVE The objective of our Facial Specialist program is teaching and preparing the students to specialize in facials, skin care and makeup, as well as to master the art of face, body waxing and tweezing. Graduates will be prepared to work as a self-employed entrepreneur, in a physician s office or in a beauty salon. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Facial Specialist program features both theory and practice; a short theory and a great deal of practice on live models. Students will perform skin analysis, color analysis, facials, and makeup and hair removal. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS OR PREREQUISITES 1. Students must be 16 years of age or older. 8 PERMANENT MAKEUP SPECIALIST 24 Clock Hours PROGRAM OBJECTIVE The objective of our Permanent Makeup program is to instruct students in the art of performing procedures such as eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner/full lips, areola/nipple restoration and the camouflaging of birth marks, beauty marks and scars. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Permanent Makeup Specialist program will teach students, prepare students for a successful career in the art of Permanent Makeup through the implantation of tiny droplets of custom blended colored ink into the dermal layer of the skin. ENTRANCE REQIREMENTS OR PREREQUISITES 1. Students must be 16 years of age or older. Any student under the age of 18 requires parent/guardian approval and signature to enroll. 2. Students must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. In the absence of high school diploma or GED equivalent, the applicant must pass the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test with the minimum score of Students must submit a copy Social Security card, a Florida driver s license and/or an ID card. 4. Students must possess good eye-hand coordination. 5. Students should display artistic ability, dexterity, patience and persuasive communication skills. 6. The balance may be paid by one of the following options: 10
11 Tuition paid in full upon signing of enrollment agreement. Registration fee paid upon signing enrollment agreement. Balance paid prior to program start date. Registration fee paid at enrollment. Half of balance paid before first class begins; remaining half paid within two weeks after the program start date. There are no carrying charges, interest charges, or service charges connected or charged with any of these programs. Contracts are not sold to third parties at any time. Late fees will be assessed on payments made after due dates. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY Should a student s enrollment be terminated or cancelled for any reason, any refunds will be made according to the following refund schedule: 1. Cancellation can be made in person, by electronic mail, by Certified Mail or by termination. 2. All monies will be refunded if the school does not accept the applicant or if the student cancels within three (3) business days after signing the enrollment agreement and making initial payment. 3. Cancellation after the third (3rd) Business Day, but before the first class, will result in a refund of all monies paid, with the exception of the registration fee. 4. Cancellation after attendance has begun, but prior to 40% completion of the program, will result in a pro-rated refund computed on the number of hours completed to the total program hours. 5. Cancellation after completing 40% of the program will result in no refund. 6. Termination Date: In calculating the refund due to a student, the last date of actual attendance by the student is used in the calculation unless earlier written notice is received. 7. Refunds will be made within 30 days of termination of students enrollment or receipt of Cancellation Notice from student. 11
12 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Candidates/applicants for any of the three programs offered at K.B. Beauty Academy (Nail Specialist, Facial Specialist and Permanent Makeup Specialist) must be at least 16 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Those under 18 years of age require parent or guardian s approval and signature to enroll in any of the above-mentioned programs. K.B. Beauty Academy is geared toward the aesthetic aspect of the industry. The most successful graduates, therefore, are those who have artistic abilities, dexterity, good eye-hand coordination, patience, perseverance, are detailed-oriented, and possess persuasive communication skills. A catalog describing all three programs and their requirements is available to all students. Please note: A beauty career is not suitable for everyone. An initial interview and counseling session with an Academy instructor will give the applicant an indication whether the program is right for her/him. DISCRIMINATION POLICY K.B. 14 DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATIONS K.B. Beauty Academy is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. K.B. Beauty Academy is closed on the following holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 2012 Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25, 2012 New Year s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Easter, Sunday, April 7, 2013 Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, 2012 Thursday, July 4, 2013 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS A diploma of completion will be awarded to students who have fulfilled all the requirements for a program (Nail Specialist, Facial Specialist or Permanent Makeup Specialist). The student must pass minimum acceptable grade of 70% or a (C) on the theoretic portion of the programs, and a PASS (on a PASS/FAIL method) on the practical part (clinical/skills/lab). In addition, all tuition and fees must be paid in full prior to graduation. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS POLICY Attendance and Academic Progress Evaluation. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend and participate in all classes. Tardiness not only impedes one s progress, but also disrupts the class and others progress as well. 14
15 Satisfactory progress in both attendance and academic work are Required of all students enrolled at the academy. Attendance Progress: Students must attend at least 67% of the scheduled/contracted hours to be considered making satisfactory progress. Academic Progress: Students are graded on both theoretical and practical aspects of the program. THEORETICAL: Students must pass with a minimum acceptable grade of 70% or a C by the following grading system: 90% - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 69% or below = F PRACTICAL: Students are graded Pass/Fail on the practical portion of the programs (clinical/skills/lab). LEAVE OF ABSENCE A leave of absence is a temporary interruption of training for personal reason such as sickness, emergency, and loss of employment, pregnancy or death in the family. Requests must be submitted in writing. Leaves of absence are strictly limited and may not exceed 30 days (in extreme situations an extension may be arranged with the instructor). Missed classes must be made up immediately upon returning from leave of absence in order to fulfill the requirements of the program enrolled in. PROBATION POLICY Any student who fails the course (theory or practice) must bring the grade up to passing grade of 70% or a C within four weeks before being awarded a diploma. 15
16 STUDENT SERVICES HOUSING Housing is not provided by K.B. Beauty Academy to students. However, there are several apartments, hotels, and motels minutes away. Prospective students may also seek accommodations via the internet. Housing lists will be provided to the students upon request. EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE Employment inquiries made to K.B. Beauty Academy for graduate students will be posted on the bulletin board. Instructors will advise potential students on positions suited to their interests and capabilities. The Academy will assist graduates in finding the suitable jobs without additional placement assistance charges. However, K.B. Beauty Academy cannot directly or indirectly guarantee graduates employment. COUNSELING Students should feel free to talk to an administrator or their instructor when he/she has academic or personal issues that may impede the progress of his/her study. STUDENT RECORDS Student records are permanently maintained and kept on file. TRANSFERABILITY OF CREDITS K.B Beauty Academy does not accept credits from other schools. The transferability of credits earned at this institution, however, is determined by the receiving institution. It is the student s responsibility to confirm whether or not credits will be accepted by another institution of the student s choice. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Financial assistance is not available to students at this time. 16
17 RULES AND REGULATIONS CODE OF CONDUCT K.B. Beauty Academy is a professional beauty institution. Students are required to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Foul language, off-color jokes, theft, disruptive behaviors, disrespect toward other students or instructors, or possession of items such as unprescribed drugs, alcoholic beverages or fire arms are grounds for dismissal. Offenders will be individually counseled. Repeated misconduct is grounds for immediate dismissal from the Academy. In the event that a student has serious complaints or grievances regarding academic or disciplinary issues, he/she may confer with the director or instructor. Beauty Academy, as the name implies, is a professional beauty school. As such, students are expected to dress in a professional and modest manner. Student outfits should not be the source of distraction for instructors, other students or clients. Skirts and pants must be below the knees; no low-cut or revealing outfits; under arms and midriffs must be covered. 17
18 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS NAIL SPECIALIST FBCL-01: FLORIDA COSMETOLOGY LAWS AND RULES This course reviews Florida Board of Cosmetology laws, covering topics such as sterilization, sanitization and sanitation, as well as the laws and rules that govern the Cosmetology profession (in general and those of specific specialties). The course also describes cosmetologist duties and responsibilities and the laws that govern those who rent booths for business purposes. AIDS-01: HIVE/AIDS This course describes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), their difference, how they are transmitted and treated, and application to the workplace. NS-01: NAIL BUSINESS AND ETHICS This introductory course explains what the nail business is all about and how to interact with customers. NS-02: MANICURES This course details the proper methods of manicures. NS-03: PEDICURES This course shows various ways of performing pedicures and foot massages. NS-04: NAIL REPAIRS/MENDING This course reviews wrapping and mending nails, as well as using forms to build artificial nails. NS-05: NAIL EXTENSION This course deals with theory and practice of nails, including the use of products to build artificial nails, application of tips, and the trimming, shaping, cutting and extension of nails. 18
19 NS-06: GEL NAIL AND FIBERGLASS This course details two other methods of building artificial nails using Light Cured Gels and Fiberglass techniques. NS-07: NAIL ART/AIRBRUSHING This course shows different methods of painting nails and creating nail art using various tools, including an airbrush machine. NS-08: FRENCH MANICURES This course involves the theory and practice of assorted methods of French Manicures. NS-09: HAND TOOLS This course explains the proper method of handling various types of drills and drill bits. NS-10: PINK AND WHITE NAILS This course deals with theory and a great deal of practice to master the art of Pink and White nails. PMS-04: TECHNIQUES COLOR MIXING This course shows different techniques in color mixing and using primary, secondary and tertiary colors. PMS-05: SHAPE DESIGN Designs of Eyebrows, Eyeliner, Lip Liner, and Full Lips.
