14 admissions academic calendar A student may apply for enrollment at anytime. A new school term begins the first Monday of each month. School is in session throughout the year with the exception of the following holidays; New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day (Victory Day in RI only). See your Handbook for unexpected school closure information. admissions policies & procedures Each applicant must be 16 years of age or older in MA, or 18 years of age prior to graduation in RI. equal opportunity Rob Roy Academy s policy for equal opportunity employment and affirmative action is consistent with Federal policy in that no person shall, on the grounds of race, creed, religion, color, handicap, ethnic origin, sex, age, or political affiliation be subject to discrimination in any hiring practice or activity here at the school. handicapped policy Rob Roy Academy complies with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (section 504). We do not discriminate on the basis of handicap in the admission or recruitment of students, however manual dexterity is required. Each applicant must have either a high school diploma or a GED and must submit a copy to the school prior to enrollment. Each applicant must interview with an admissions representative to determine the suitability of the applicant for the program. Each applicant must complete all required forms in preparation for enrollment day. Rob Roy will not actively recruit students attending or admitted to another school offering a similar program of study. Classes start monthly, I enrolled when I wanted. 1 2

15 student services placement assistance Rob Roy s placement policy is to give employment assistance to graduates regardless of the date of their graduation. Rob Roy Academy employs a placement advisor who is careful to take into consideration the qualifications of its graduates, and its responsibilities to the shop/salon owner to make certain the candidate for employment is competent in every phase of his or her profession. Rob Roy Academy does not guarantee employment or specific salaries upon graduation. student advising All instructors and staff personnel are available to each student for career, academic, and personal advising. The advising is sincere, friendly and always confidential. tutoring Available for students who need additional instruction. See your instructor for an available time. graduation In order to graduate from Rob Roy Academy in Cosmetology, Barber/ Styling, Esthetics, or Manicuring students must: 1. Successfully complete their program s course hours. 2. Meet Satisfactory Progress policies of the Academy. 3. Satisfy tuition obligations/overtime charges. Rob Roy Academy holds a cap and gown graduation ceremony once each calendar year for graduates of all programs. Each student is awarded a diploma at the completion of his/her training program. student evaluations Evaluations are conducted twice throughout a students course of study. An instructor or student may request additional evaluations if they feel it is necessary. grading system Academic work is evaluated and grades are assigned at the end of each month in order to indicate a student s level of performance. Grades are based on the quality of student s work as shown by dedication, written tests, class projects, and outside assignments. The meaning of the grade notations are: % - above Average - A 80-89% - Average - B Below 80% - Failing - F All written exams are graded by the above grade notations. Practical work is graded on a pass/fail system during the first 25% of the course hours with the remaining 75% of the course graded by the grade notations above. Students must maintain an average of 80% (B) or higher on all written and practical work to satisfy the Academy s Satisfactory Progress policy as stated in the Student Handbook. attendance and tardiness policy Interruption of theory class is never allowed. Any students who are late for class may not enter class until the end of theory or when class is scheduled to break. Students are only allowed to be tardy twice per month. Although no absences are excused, missed hours can be made up during regular school hours before or after the student s regularly scheduled class. Missing more time than allowed may result in overtime/penalty fees. makeup work All work missed due to absences must be made up within 30 days, or at the discretion of the instructor depending on the subject matter. Exams not made up in the alloted time may receive a zero. 1 3

16 administrative policies/general policy Academy policies have been formulated in the best interest of both the student and the school. Rob Roy Academy reserves the right to make any changes in school policies and procedures without prior notice. Tuition rates are subject to change, although students enrolled under specific tuition rates will have such rates honored. The school reserves the right to cancel any classes which does not have the minimum number of five students enrolled. student records Student records are maintained by the school in permanent files. As a result of Section 438 of the Central Provision Act (Title IV of the Public Law ), students and parents or guardians of dependant minors have access to their files kept by the school. Information in a student s file will not be released without written consent from the student, or legal guardian (if applicable), excluding any accreditation process initiated by the institution or by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, or, in response to a directive of the Commission. The Director of Schools will oversee the release of all student records. transfer of credits Students who are concerned with entering another school and transferring credit for programs completed in this school should first inquire at the school they plan to attend to determine whether such credits will be considered transferable. Rob Roy Academy cannot assure such transferability. transfer students Credit for subjects completed in an approved similar school will be accepted from students enrolling in this school. However, these subjects must have been similar in content to those offered in the course for which the student has applied. In any instance, the student may be required to pass an examination given by our faculty for any subject in which credit is to be given (with approval of State Board). termination A student may be dismissed from Rob Roy Academy for disregarding school policies. Reasons in brief are: 1. Failure to meet the Academy s Satisfactory Progress Policies for attendance and grade point average as outlined in the school handbook. 2. Failure to attend classes for 14 calendar days. 3. Non-payment of tuition/overtime charges. 4. Conduct deemed inappropriate by the Director of Schools. 5. Violation of Drug & Alcohol Policy. A student shall be given written notice of the reason for termination and will be provided an opportunity to appeal. standards of conduct In accordance with the academic atmosphere which prevails throughout the school, all students are expected and required to conduct themselves in keeping with the highest standards of conduct. Any unseemly behavior which tends to distract other students and disrupt routine class procedure will not be tolerated. Such conduct will be considered just cause for dismissal of students from the school. financial aid assistance Rob Roy Academy has been qualified as an eligible institution by the United States Department of Education to participate in federal and state financial aid programs. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid prior to the commencement of their program. financial information The Academy s tuition cost for each course of study and the cost of equipment and texts are listed on an insert at the back of this catalog. The Academy reserves the right to initiate an Interruption Of Studies for any student whose tuition account balance is not current. The student will not be allowed to resume classes until the account is brought up to date. 1 4

17 leave of absence A student may be granted a Leave of Absence in compliance with the laws governing and handed down by either state or federal agencies. All Leaves of Absence must be requested in writing, stating the reason for and the length of time of the leave. Only the Director, Assistant Directors or the FA Director can grant a Leave of Absence. return of Title IV funds As directed by the Department of Education, any funds received through Title IV Funding will be returned to the respective program based on the amount of federal funds earned by the student at the time a student withdraws. This is based on a proportional calculation based on date of withdrawal through 60% of the scheduled payment period. The amount a student earns or does not earn under this policy has no relationship to the students institutional charges. This is done prior to a refund. refund policy A. An applicant not accepted, shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid, and the contract shall become null and void. B. A student or guardian who cancels his/her enrollment in writing within five business days of signing the enrollment contract is entitled to a refund of all monies paid less equipment costs and the cost of books. This applies regardless of whether or not the student has started training. C. After the initial five day period, and prior to the commencement of the program, an applicant is entitled to a refund of all monies paid, less a registration fee of $ The cancellation date will be determined by the postmark on written notification, or the date in which it is delivered to the Director of the Academy. D. If a student terminates after the five day period and after the commencement of the program, he/she is entitled to a refund only after Federal requirements have been satisfied and federal monies due have been returned. The following then applies: 1. State Policy: Based upon scheduled elapsed hours as of last day of attendance. The student is charged quarterly increments as determined by their scheduled hours, full kit and Registration Fee are charged. Example: 01% % of program = 25% charge 25% % = 50% charge 50% % = 75% charge 75% - 100% = 100% charge 2. Enrollment Time: Is defined as the time elapsed between the actual starting date and the date of the student s last day of physical attendance in the school. Any monies due the applicant or student shall be refunded within 30 days of formal cancellation by the student, or formal termination by the school, which shall occur no more than 14 calendar days from the last day of physical attendance, or in the case of leave of absence, the date of withdrawal shall be the earlier of the date of expiration of the leave of absence or the date the student notifies the institution that they will not be returning. E. If a course is canceled prior to the student s actual start date, the student is entitled to a full refund of all monies paid. If a course is canceled after the student starts the program, or if the school is permanently closed and no longer offering instruction, then the student is entitled to a State Policy refund, for Title IV students Federal regulations still apply. From Rt. 146 North: Follow Rt. 146 to Rt. 290 East. From Rt. 290 E, take exit 17, at end of ramp take a left. Fall River, MA Campus From Rt. 195 East: Take exit 5 (in Massachusetts), at end of ramp take a right. At first traffic light take a left, at the next light take another left onto South Main Street. The school is two blocks down on the right. From Rt. 195 West: Take exit 7, at end of ramp take a left. At second traffic light take a right (Walgreens will be on your right), follow through to the second set of lights and take a right onto South Main Street. The school is two blocks down on the right. New Bedford, MA Campus From I-195 East: Take exit 16, at end of ramp take a right. Take right at the stop sign onto Belleville Avenue, follow for approximately 1-1/4 miles. Take a left onto Hatch Street, the school is at the end of the street on the left. From Rt. 140 South: Follow Rt. 140 into New Bedford, bear left at fork (with lights) onto Acushnet Avenue. The school is approximately 5 miles down on the left. From I-195 West: Take exit 16 (Coggeshall Street), bear to the left on ramp. At lights take a left onto Belleville Avenue and follow for approximately 1-1/4 miles. Take a left onto Hatch Street, the school is at the end of the street on the left. 1 6

19 Taunton, MA Campus From I-495 South: Take exit 9, at end of ramp take a right. Follow until the street ends and take a right, this street will bring you to the rotary at the Taunton Green. Proceed 3/4 of the way around the rotary then straight through the light, the school will be on the left. From I-495 North: Take exit 8 (Bay Street), at end of ramp take a left. Follow this street until you reach the rotary. Proceed 3/4 of the way around the rotary then straight through the light, the school will be on the left. Woonsocket, RI Campus From Rt. 146 South: Take the Rt. 104 exit and at end of ramp follow signs for 104 South. Follow 104 S. (this street will actually take a right hand turn, as well as curving a bit) into the center of Woonsocket. Stay on this same street, the school is about 1-1/2 miles from the center of town on the left. From Rt. 146 North: Take the Rt. 99 exit (this shares the same access road as the Rt. 295 exit but DO NOT get on Rt. 295, the Rt. 99 exit is after that). Stay on Rt. 99 to the end and take a left. Follow through to the sixth set of traffic lights (at Blockbuster) and take a right. Get into left lane quickly, the school parking lot is the second lot on the left. From I-24 North: Follow I-24 to exit 12B (Rt. 140 North), bear right on the ramp. Follow Rt. 140 (County Street) until it ends and take a left at the lights. The school is 3 blocks down on the right.
