3 lifestyle driven by opportunity Message from the Mayor The Gold Coast is the best place to raise a family, start a business and enjoy a great lifestyle. Being active in your community is a fantastic way to meet people and make the most of our unique way of life. Gold Coasters have very big hearts - demonstrated through our 2400 plus community groups that support one another, and help make the most of what our city has to offer. As Mayor, my door is always open to ideas about improving city services and providing assistance to those that are most vulnerable in our community. This guide is a valuable resource and I encourage you to take the time to read it and find out about the vast range of programs and services on offer. It s also a great way to find out where you might volunteer your time. I urge you to play your part in making the Gold Coast a truly connected community. Visit cityofgoldcoast.com.au for more information about our great city. Tom Tate Mayor Image (above): City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate ii

4 New resident checklist Have you: Paid your rates or checked when they are due? Checked which days your waste and recycling bins are emptied? Consider a Green Waste Bin service? Registered on the electoral roll? Registered your pet? The Gold Coast at a glance Do you: Know which Division you live in and the name of your local Councillor? Know the beach safety rules? Know where your local library is? Once a series of sleepy seaside villages between Coolangatta and Southport, the city has grown from an idyllic holiday community into a busy and sophisticated metropolis. Despite its transformation into Australia s sixth largest city, its relaxed lifestyle, natural beauty and distinctive character has endured. Gold Coast City is also one of the greenest in the country, with public parklands and reserves covering approximately half the total area of 1400 square kilometres. Our region is home to more than 604 native animal and 1672 native plant species, whose habitats range from coastal beaches and wetlands, through to mountain rainforest. The city s boundary extends from the Queensland New South Wales border in the south, through to Yatala in the north, and from South Stradbroke Island and coastal beaches in the east to the hinterland escarpment in the west. iii

6 City of Gold Coast Our Council City of Gold Coast Councillors represent 14 separate Divisions across the city. The Councillors are our elected representatives, ensuring the policies and actions adopted by Council are in the best interests of residents and business. The Administration Behind the team of Councillors are the Chief Executive Officer, directors and the devoted staff who implement Council decisions, policies and programs. Staff provide residents with hundreds of services every day. The staff manage Council operations to help our community prosper. Refer to the A to Z of Council Services section of this directory. Responsibilities of government Working out which level of government is responsible for providing specific services can be confusing. The following outline may make the job easier. For more detailed information on the responsibilities of the different levels of government, go to cityofgoldcoast.com.au Did you know? The Gold Coast s local government area is divided into 14 divisions. At local government elections every four years, voters from across the city choose a Councillor to represent their division, and directly elect the Mayor of Gold Coast City. Councillors provide the most direct representation to their communities. This service is completely free of charge and not subject to any kind of means test. Our organisation has come to be known simply as The CAB over time and has now been servicing the Gold Coast community for more than 29 years. From very humble beginnings in a small space generously provided by the Gold Coast City Council we have grown to one occupying modern, easily accessible premises and comprising of more than 25 volunteers, five solicitors, two financial counsellors and various support staff. All our staff and volunteers are dedicated to ensuring that the entire Gold Coast is serviced, from Yatala and Jacobs Well in the north to Coolangatta in the south and extending out to our hinterland suburbs in the west. Apart from the community information provided by our dedicated volunteers, our legal and financial counselling services are in very heavy demand. For full information about these services please refer to our website, our facebook page, visit our office or ring our friendly volunteers on the front counter. The Guide that you are now reading contains approximately 2400 entries and is regarded as the most accurate and up-to-date source of information about community organisations on the Gold Coast. Whilst we are able to Google just about anything on the internet nowadays, at times some of the information on various web pages can be inaccurate or out of date or otherwise unreliable, unlike the information in the Guide. Our thanks go to the Gold Coast City Council for publishing the Guide and to all the representatives of organisations, clubs, etc who contact us with new or updated details. As well as this printed version, the Guide is also available on our website, advicebureau.org.au, in an easy to navigate format. The web version is updated weekly so if you are updating your organisation s details, please fill in the listing request form on our website or notify us by post, or fax of any changes.
