3 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 General This is a training completion report on training for mason on earthquake resistant construction of buildings completed by REED Nepal by funding support from Australian Himalayan Trust. This report outline the outcome of the training program and lesson learned during training implementation. 1.2 Goal and Objectives The main goal of this program is to enhance Knowledge and skill of masons on theoretical and practical aspects of earthquake resistant construction of buildings. The objectives are: Enhance the skills and knowledge of masons in earthquake resistant construction technique to work as a lead mason on earthquake resistant construction works. 2 To enhance the skills and also make them familiar about retrofitting technique. Eliminate the misconception of previous construction technique. EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT NEW CONSTRUCTION TRAINING 2.1 Approach To enhance the skills of masons on earthquake resistant construction of Building, only theoretical aspect of training is not sufficient and extensive practical exercise has been included. REED Nepal has selected Teachers Union training hall as training venue. Practical exercises were conducted on same venue. 2.2 Training Planning Seven days earthquake resistant construction training program was planned for the masons of Taplejung district. Participants were skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled masons. Training content was theoretical as well as practical. The training has pass, fail course and the participant scoring below pass mark need to attend similar training next time and consider as unsuccessful candidates. Successful participants were certified after the completion of the training. 1

4 ` 2.3 Course coverage Seven days course for earthquake resistant construction covers the basics of earthquake and preparedness, new construction technique, timber and bamboo connections with detail practical exercises. It also includes theoretical aspects of retrofitting of load bearing and frame structures. 5 days practical exercise include construction of stone and brick masonry walls with incorporation of earthquake resistant components, bamboo joint detailing, wood joint detailing and construction of beam/column from foundation with ductile detailing. Emphasis is also given to the quality control of materials and site management. Details of the course content are attached in Annex Methodology Seven days training for masons had been completed at Teachers Union hall Taplejung. There were 34 participants in seven days mason training. Theoretical sessions were conducted in the training hall of Teachers Union hall and practical exercises were conducted at same venue and its premises. Exercise for various practical was done on rotation basis such that each participant got the opportunity to practice all skills. After the completion of training, stone masonry wall model, frame with beam/column detailing and wood joint detail were left for demonstration at site. Three resource persons managed by NSET deliver the session and facilitate during practical exercises. Participant were divided into a group of 9-10 persons and supervised by Engineer during the practical work. 2.5 Training outcomes Total 34 masons from Taplejung district participated on Seven days masons training on earthquake resistant construction of building. Training Date New 24th construction January- Training 30th No. of Gender participants Male Female January 2016 Total 2

5 Participant s evaluation Participant were evaluated through verbal interaction, performance based observation, pre and post test score and evaluation of attitude. Based on these, participants were evaluated and certified as successful completion. 2.6 Evaluation of the Training by the Participants Sitakala Bhattarai, Amphudin, told that, So many applicants were interested for this training but we have got this opportunity. I am happy for being a participant in this training. We have learned here very important things but its not easy for us in the practical field to apply these things. They will not easily believe us to our openion because our openion will be different from the traditional practice. But I will try from my side to contribute in the society. I can also do this because I have learned something here which is very much essential for the newly construction building in our society and other people cannot do this. Its my responsibility. Ishwori Gautam, Nangkholyang, told that, It is a very good opportunity to be a participant in this training. Training was very fruitful for us. We have learned so many things in this training which were really new for us. The most important thing is Locally available materials are also useful for the earthquake resistance buildings. We have learned about sill band, lintel band on frame structure as well as corner stitch, reinforcement in corner for load bearing wall. Bamboo and wooden member in corner and t-junction may be very useful here. I will try to apply these things in new construction field which are concerned with my responsibility. It's my promise. 3 LESSON LEARNT AND WAYS AHEAD i. Training was very successful to achieve its goals due to very good management and preparation of the training. ii. All participants were able to perform the required skills as everyone got the opportunity to get involved in every activity of learning. iii. Participants were more excited to learn new pattern of work such as lintel band, sill band, corner and t-stitches made from locally available bamboo and wood and they realized that construction using these techniques is very much essential for earthquake resistance building construction. 3
