2 I. COURSE: OF TAPING TECHNIQUES PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT/ATHLETIC TRAINING OPTION COURSE SYLLABUS PE 241: SECTION 02: MECHANICS OF TAPING TECHNIQUES Spring 2009 II. III. Phone: rmerrow@.keene.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION A. Taping and wrapping for the prevention and protection of sports injuries. Introduce the Bio-mechanical concepts of the application techniques for modern adhesive tapes and orthopedic braces. Prerequisite: PE Major, Athletic Training Major, or permission of instructor. B. Course methodology utilizes a combination of lectures, video presentations, skill demonstrations, skill practice and application lab experiences to acquire skill proficiency. C. 1 credit IV. GENERAL OBJECTIVES A. To provide information, develop skills and become proficient with the basic techniques for the application of modern adhesive athletic tape. B. Provide information on bio-mechanical concepts and correct technique for the prevention of injuries through the application of athletic tape and braces. C. To clarify the benefits of taping, wrapping and braces. Discuss the principles to be utilized in the development of individual variations. V. LEARNING OUTCOMES A. By the end of the course, the Student should be able to; 1. Explain the principles and concepts related to prophylactic taping, wrapping, bracing, and protective pad fabrication 2. Select and fit appropriate standard protective equipment on the patient for safe participation in sport and/or physical activity. This includes but is not limited to: Prophylactic knee braces and prophylactic ankle braces. 3. Select, fabricate, and apply appropriate preventive taping and wrapping procedures, splints, braces, and other special protective devices. Procedures and devices should be consistent with sound anatomical and biomechanical principles. 4. Explain the effectiveness of taping, wrapping, bracing, and other supportive/protective methods for facilitation of safe progression to advanced therapeutic exercises and functional activities. 5. Demonstrate the ability to access medical and health care information through electronic media. VI. COURSE REGULATIONS A. Class meets Spring Semester 2009 Th 10:00-11:20 AM B. Attendance, participation and written assignments: Attendance is necessary for proper knowledge and skill development, as well as participation in skill practice and is therefore REQUIRED. Point totals for the combination of written assignments and class attendance and participation will be 175. Each class session is worth 10 points. B. Literature Review - Annotated Bibliography on 5 different journal articles or research, 3 published from professional journals, 2 from Web based sources and write an annotation for each. The annotations should be a condensed version of the major points of the article. They should be typed, double-spaced and no longer than one page. 3 spelling will form a partial basis for the grade on this project. Please see the last page on how to write an Annotated bibliography and further information on this project. C. Skills proficiencies during course, there will be clinical proficiencies for each skill learned throughout the course with check off for each arranged at times outside of class. D. 4 X. CLASS ATTENDANCE: A A student is expected to attend all class meetings and assigned clinical hours. Any student expecting to be absent from a class meeting or assigned clinical hours must contact the instructor before the absence (if possible) to arrange for making up work that will be missed. Make-up procedures apply only for excused absences which include; adverse weather conditions, illness, accident, death in the family, and approved activities such as field trips, scheduled athletic events, off-campus use of academic resources and authorized special projects. XI. STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC HONESTY A. KSC remains open during most inclement weather. You should expect that class will be held regardless of weather conditions. However, if you are traveling from a distance and consider the weather too hazardous to travel, please leave a message on my voice mail ( ) prior to class or to rmerrow@keene.edu. In the event that the instructor is unable to travel, a message of class cancellation will be left by voice mail greeting at XIII. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES A. 5 WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY? The annotated bibliography project is an excellent way to prepare for future projects and papers that will be required in advanced classes in Athletic Training. Using this technique for your literature reviews allows you to review and preserve important information and keep references that are of quality and needed for your papers. The Library at KSC has many sources for information. I would like you to utilize at least three different journals to complete your total of Five. In addition to the journal article you may use an internet source for information however the citation of that source must be accurate and in proper format. This can be found over the library web site. The following is an adaptation of information on how to write an annotated bibliography from the work of Michael Engle, Amy Blumenthal, and Tony Cosgrave of the Reference Services Division, at Cornell University Library. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to journal articles, books and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. ANNOTATIONS VS. ABSTRACTS Abstracts are the purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in periodical indexes. Annotations are descriptive and critical; they expose the author's point of view, clarity and appropriateness of expression, and authority. Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research. First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. Cite the article, or document using the appropriate style. Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic. SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY FOR A JOURNAL ARTICLE The following example uses the APA format for the journal citation: Goldschneider, F. K., Waite, L. J., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51, The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that non-family living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of non-family living.
