(2008). The Law of Healthcare Administration (5th Ed.). Chicago: Health Administration Press. ISBN: COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Utilize the world wide web and internet to participate in assignments, class / group projects, pod casts, and phone conferences, simulating the phone / video conferences, trainings, and assignments experienced in the health care management industry. 2. Describe the foundation of the U.S. legal system including the administrative agencies and government departments having the greatest legal/regulatory impact on the health care industry. 3. Understand the basis of tort law with an emphasis on negligence and its relationship to health care providers and managers of health care services. 4. Apply the concept of corporate liability in managing the responsibilities and legal risks of health care organizations. 5. Understand the legal environment in which medical providers, and other allied health workers, practice their professions. 6. Gain an appreciation for the enormous impact of medical malpractice on the costs of health care. 7. Understand the legal ramifications of the major restructuring taking place in managed care and health care in general. 8. Apply legal doctrines and principles in analyzing cases in health law. 9. Have a familiarity with related legal and regulatory issues such as ADA, OSHA requirements, Patient Self-Determination Act, HIPPA, and clinical practice guidelines. 1

Competition & Antitrust law 10% XIII. Fraud laws & Corporate compliance 10% XIV. Issues of Reproduction & Birth 2% XV. Health Information Management 2% Class Attendance: A. Students who are absent FOR MORE THAN sixteen of the scheduled class hours (each hour includes instructional time and break time) prior to the end of the second teaching weekend) and who have not officially withdrawn from the University or have not dropped the course shall be assigned a grade of WF. The WF will be counted on the student s grade point average calculation as a failing grade. Neither make-up work nor other absence excuses will be accepted to avoid assigning this grade. 2

Students, who are NOT absent for more than sixteen of the scheduled class hours up to and including the entire second teaching weekend, but whose TOTAL ABSENCES FOR ALL weekends exceeds sixteen of the scheduled class hours shall be assigned a grade of F. Neither make-up work nor absence excuses will be accepted to avoid assigning this grade. C. Students who are absent from scheduled class hours, but who do not exceed stated limits in paragraph A and B above, will have FIVE POINTS deducted from their cumulative course points for each hour of absence from the class. Absences (regardless of the circumstances or reasons) will be forgiven only upon satisfactory completion of assigned make-up work. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and exercises will be the major source of instruction. Students should participate fully. Class Schedule: Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:50 P.M. Prior to 1 st Class: Students should read Chapters 1-5 Class Assignments/Topics to Be Covered/Activities: Weekend # 1: August 16-17, 2014 Assignment in class: Explanation of Class assignment Weekend #2 September 6-7, 2014 Mid-Term Exam Assignment in class: Weekend #3 October 4-5, 2014 Final Exam Class assignment presentations: 3

4 Page #4 Grading: There will be two essay type short answer tests each worth 100 points each; Class participation/attendance is worth a total of 100 points. The class project is worth 100 points. This totals 400 points possible for the class. Points can be lost due to absences (see Class Attendance section above). The following grading structure will be utilized. Class Project: % = A 372 to 400 points 85-92% = B 340 to % = C 280 to % = D 240 to 279 Below 60%=F 239 & below Each student will select a current Health Care Legal case from a news source and explain: (1) The issues and the laws that pertain to the issues. (2) Preparation from the participants from each side of the issue(s) (3) Which side do you think is correct legally, ethically and morally? (4) How will or would the outcome of this case affect future health care activity Class Presentation of Project: Each student shall present, on the last weekend of class a synopsis of their paper. Power point and other computer type presentations are welcome given resources and time available SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. If you are located on a military installation, and depending on the type emergency a senior military member may take control of the situation and direct you on the action to take. Please follow their instructions and do as asked. Similarly, if you are at a community college, their security personal may arrive and take control of a situation, please follow their instructions as well. 4

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, or collusion.
