CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Survey of British literature fro the Eighteenth Century through the Modern Period. Study of the principle authors, works, and trends in British literature with readings from an anthology. Further development of literary analysis and composition skills. II. COURSE GOAL This course is designed to provide students with the abilities to recognize selected works of English literature from the Eighteenth Century through the Modern Period. Furthermore, to place the historical events in chronological sequence and correlate the philosophical and literacy activities with that time in history. III. IV. REQUIRED BACKGROUND/PREREQUISITES Course Prerequisites: English 1302 TEXTBOOK(S);READINGS; MATERIALS Greenblatt, Stephen ed. The Norton Anthology of English Literature. 9 th edition. Dictionary of student s choice. V. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Blackboard VI. EXEMPLARY EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts (H) H1. To demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities. H2. To understand those works as expressions of individual and human values within an historical and social context.
2 H3. To respond critically to works in the arts and humanities. H5. To articulate an informed personal reaction to works in the arts and humanities. H6. To develop an appreciation for the aesthetic principles that guide or govern the humanities and arts. H7. To demonstrate knowledge of the influence of literature, philosophy, and/or the arts on intercultural experiences. VII. BASIC INTELLECTUAL COMPETENCIES B1: Reading- The ability to analyze and interpret a variety of printed materials, books, documents and articles above a 12th grade level. B2: Writing-The ability to produce clear, correct and coherent prose adapted to purpose, occasion and audience-above a 12th grade level. B3: Speaking-The ability to communicate orally in clear, coherent and persuasive language appropriate to purpose, occasion and audience-above a 12th grade level. B4: Listening-The ability to analyze and interpret various forms of spoken communication, possess sufficient literacy skills of writing and reading-above a 12th grade level. B5: Critical Thinking-The ability to apply both qualitative and quantitative skills analytically and creatively to subject matter to evaluate arguments and construct alternative strategies. VIII. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To be able to recognize selected works of English literature from the 18th Century through the Post-Modern Period. (H1) (H2) (B1) 2. To demonstrate an awareness that literature is a reflection of man s continuing search into the human experience regardless of the time or locale in which it is written. (H5) (H3) (H6) (B1) (B2) (B3) (B4) (B5) 3. To place the historical events in chronological sequence and correlate the philosophical and literacy activities with that history. (H2) (H3) (H6) (H7) (B1) (B2) (B3) (B4) (B5) IX. COURSE/CLASSROOM POLICIES 1. Regular and punctual attendance in all classes is considered essential for optimum academic success. If the student has the equivalence of three weeks of absences, the instructor may drop the student from a non-developmental course with a grade of F. It is the responsibility of the instructor to keep an accurate and comprehensive record of attendance. For an online class, students who do not submit at least one of the Weekly Assignments by the weekly due date (noted on the class timeline), the student is counted absent. The assignments include discussion boards, text assignments, essays, quizzes, etc.
3 2. Upon written approval from instructor, make-up papers/assignments should be completed within one week of the original due date. Any test not made-up within one week of the original due date will receive a grade of zero. After that time, a student may opt to do an additional research paper to replace the missing grade. No more than one paper should be made up. 3. Any assignment reflecting cheating, plagiarism, or any other form of academic dishonesty will receive a grade of zero. Students are required to read and sign a plagiarism policy at the beginning of the semester. X. POLICIES 1. Evaluation: In order for me to see what you are getting out of this course, I will implement methods of assessment to gage what you know. You will have quizzes, writing assignments, thinking assignments, and other activities to gauge your mastery of the course material. Scope of the projects will vary, however, students are expected to THINK, not just read and restate. 2. Quizzes and most class activities may not be made up. I never drop test or project grades. 3. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING UP WITH ASSIGNMENTS AND DUE DATES. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR EACH DAY, AND YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FRO CLASS, REGARDLESS OF CIRCUMSTANCES. BEING ILL-PREPARED FOR CLASS MAY RESULT IN DISMISSAL FROM CLASS, RESULTING IN AN UNEXCUED ABSENCE. XII. TUTORING Tutoring is available in the Goleman Library of Ranger College. XIII. STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS ADA Statement: Ranger College provides a variety of services for students with learning and/or phycial disabilities. The student is responsible for making the initial contact with the Ranger College Counselor. It is advisable to make this contact before or immediately after the semester begins. XIV. ACADEMIC HONESTY Plagiarism is another word for academic dishonesty and is a form of theft. This occurs when you attempt to present someone else s work as your own and/or you do not provide adequate documentation to another author s work. Students caught plagiarizing will fail the course. XVI. Discussion Boards Students will post in BlackBoard weekly reading responses. These posts will be 1 short paragraph of at least 100 words where you briefly (1) respond/answer the blog question
4 for that week, (2) use text evidence to support your answer, (3) analyze and explain how your text evidence supports your answer, and (4) convey a question that arose out of their reading. In addition, students must give each blog entry an original title. Students must fulfill all of these requirements to receive credit for their blog posts. 1 paragraphs words Answer the question Provide text evidence Convey question In addition to blog posts, students will comment on one other s initial discussion board posts. Students must be mindful of the due dates for each discussion board assignment. These responses will be at least 1 paragraph of at least 50 words in which the student offers a brief answer to the blogger s question. Responses must also refer to the week s reading, although responses do not need direct quotations. Students must fulfill all of these requirements to receive credit for their blog responses. Initial blog posts are worth four (4) points and responses are worth one (1) point. XVII. ASSESSMENT The student s final grade in this class will be determined by a point scale of 1000 points. Assignment point total s will be as follows: 13 Discussion boards worth 10 points each 9 Response Papers worth 20 points each 9 Reading Quizzes worth 20 points each 2 Literary Analysis Papers worth 50 points each 1 Unit exam worth 100 points 2 Unit exams worth 75 points each Final exam worth 150 points Reflection Discussion Board worth 5 points Syllabus Acknowledgement worth 5 points points = A points = B points = C points = D 599 points and below = F XVIII. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS Students should expect weekly a discussion board, reading quiz, and response paper for the majority of the semester. There will be an exception to this on occasion.
