Year 10 Work Experience Monday 13th Friday 17th June 2016

December 15 Dear Parent / Carer, For many years Balshaw s has developed a comprehensive Work Experience programme for our Year 10 students, enabling them to sample life in a work related environment. We feel this is a very important opportunity for our pupils and are funding it ourselves for the third time since the removal of central funding. This year, work experience will take place over 5 days from Monday 13th June - Friday 17th June, 2016 inclusive. The purpose of Work Experience is to develop the students skills in the following areas:- i) communication ii) working with a wide variety of people iii) solving problems in new situations. It will give the students an insight into and an appreciation of the World of Work. It is not always associated with the student s career choice, although this may be useful for some pupils. Attached to this letter are several forms, the first is a medical form; there is also a list of important dates and finally a self-placement form. If your child is arranging their own self-placement (we recommend this) please be aware that they need to return their form by the deadline, as forms returned after this date cannot be processed (this date is set by EBP the company who do our employer checks and not by school). If your child is unable to arrange a self-placement then they will be able to select a work placement through a database provided by Education Business Partnership, please note that placements are limited in number and variety. This process happens after self placements close at the end of February. We hope that finding and attending work experience placements will be a smooth process for all involved this year. If you have any queries regarding Work Experience, please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours sincerely, Mr S C Haycocks Head teacher Mr D. Melling Assistant Head (i/c Work Experience)

Important dates / How to go about getting a Work Experience placement. Deadline for Medical forms to be handed in by - Friday 29th January Aim to find a self-placement for work experience. This could be a workplace known to family or friends, or you might contact an employer yourself because you are interested in their particular area of work. If a workplace agrees to take you for work experience, they must have Employer s Liability Insurance. Take a self-placement form to the employer for them to fill in the relevant details, and get a copy of their Employer s Liability Insurance. Once you have both of these, bring them into school and hand them into Mrs Sinclair in the Learning Resources Centre/Library Room 21. DEADLINE for Self Placement forms to be fully completed including a copy of the Employer s Liability Insurance form and handed in - Monday 29th February **Forms submitted after this date cannot be accepted and the placement will not be able to take place** Placements Fixed You must not change your placement beyond this point unless you are willing to pay a charge of 45 - Monday 25th April Blue Placement Agreement forms issued by Friday 27th May, students need to arrange to contact their placement employer to have the form signed. Deadline for Blue Placement Agreement forms to be returned signed by the student, the parent /carer and the employer - Monday 6th June Work Experience Placement Monday 13th June Friday 17th June 2016

Some useful information What is Work Experience? The experience involves taking on the role of a young worker and engaging in work tasks, using and developing work skills, being involved in work procedures and experiencing work environments. What are students expected to do on Work Experience? The workplace experience may involve:- - doing a job - helping someone to do their job - sampling a number of different jobs - carrying out specially constructed tasks or projects. Which students can go out on Work Experience? Only students in their last year of compulsory schooling (that is, after Easter in Year 10) and beyond are eligible to be involved in the scheme. Can students find their own placement? Yes, in fact this is the best way to obtain a placement, but there are a few guidelines to follow:- A Self Placement form has to be completed Placements must be within the stated dates The placement is not a student s weekend or holiday job The placement has correct insurance and agrees to Health and Safety check by Education Business Partnership (NW) Ltd. What are the hours of work? It is expected that the pupil will work the usual hours associated with the job chosen, however, it is illegal for them to work more than 40 hours per week. This may have an effect on any part-time work they do, if it takes them over the 40 hours. What sort of clothing will be needed? Should special clothing be required this will usually be supplied by the employer. Personal clothing and footwear acceptable to the employer are the responsibility of the student. Many employers will inform the students on the appropriate type of clothing required. Students will be issued a job description which will include the dress code. Are the students paid for Work Experience? Students are not paid for Work Experience. How will students be supervised? Employers will normally have a named adult to be responsible for the student in the work placement. The student will have a named member of our school staff who will phone and/or visit during the placement. What is the position regarding insurance against accidents? Employers are asked to ensure their policies cover student work experience. Education Business Partnership (NW) Ltd check this aspect of the placement is in order.

How will Balshaw s prepare the students for Work Experience? The students will be well briefed in school. They will know what is expected of them and will have certain tasks to undertake. Information will be given during assemblies and during tutorial time by teaching staff. What is required of Parents / Carers? Parents / Carers are asked to:- 1. Complete the medical form so that the student can return it as soon as possible. 2. Discuss the students choice of placement, carefully, covering issues of time, travel, transport etc. and help the student to obtain the correct placement for them, either by completing a self placement form, or choosing a job from the database. 3. Sign the Placement Agreement Form which will be sent home with students once the placement has been confirmed. 4. Encourage the prompt completion and return to school, of the Work Experience Diary at the end of the placement. What about emergencies? Please, contact school immediately if there is any concern about the arrangements before or during the placement. Illness should be reported to the school and the employer if this means an absence from the placement. Do not encourage your son / daughter to walk away from the placement if there is a problem until school has had the opportunity to visit and assess the situation. Please note If students fail to find a work experience placement or if their placement falls through, they will have to attend school for the full five days.

Work Experience MEDICAL FORM The following information is required by the employer in order to provide a safe and healthy placement for your son/daughter. **Deadline for submission Friday 29th January 2016** Failure to disclose accurate information could put your son/daughter at risk and will result in the placement being withdrawn: To be completed by the parent or carer of: Student s Name:...Tutor Group: 10.
